SASSY: A COLLECTION OF LINKED POEMS
SASE the prolific poet pulls another from his teetering stockpile (CC) a stack of notes from Haiku (who think they're) Greats (AR) in a gunny sack just outside your door my deflated ego (CC) the crone with a long nose cackling back at crows (AR) Alexis Rotella's brief and unusual renga forms are here as well. Briefly, rengaccio is a five-link poem about politically correct, foot-in-mouth, or embarrassing situations; rengatto is a nine-link poem with the mention of a cat therein; rendango consists of seven links that mentions a dance. Instructions on how to write each of these forms are included here. Altogether, these frisky poems frequently left me laughing out loud, and do so every time I go back to this delightful collection. Marianne Bluger was born in Ottawa (1945), and spent her childhood in various small Ontario towns where her father, a Holocaust survivor, found work teaching school. She graduated with distinction from McGill where she studied pre-medical subjects and philosophy as well as taking poetry courses with Louis Dudek. She later dropped out of medical school to marry a Zen Master who was, at the time, a refugee. With him she had two children whom she raised as a single parent.
The poet was, for twenty-five years, administrator of the Canadian Writers’ Foundation. She co-founded Christians Against Apartheid which operated for many years to exert pressure in Canada and abroad to end Apartheid. She also co-founded the Tabitha Foundation, a charity working effectively now to bring healing and help to the people of Cambodia.
Bluger has written eight books of poetry. She lives in Ottawa with her husband of eleven years, Larry Neily. She has just finished Leafsmoke (Collected Haiku 1975-2000) and is working on a collection of lyrics, Nude with Scar and Other Portraits.

Usually it takes forever to get work out of Ottawa writer Clare Latremouille, who, despite herself, has managed to appear in a number of journals throughout the 1990s (usually through me submitting her writing to journals who had asked, or simply including her in whatever project I was editing at the time), including Hostbox graffito: the poetry poster The Carleton Arts Review , The Backwater Review, Missing Jacket Paperplates and STANZAS , as well as numerous above/ground press poem broadsides and the chapbook, I will write a poem for you. Now: (above/ground press, 1995). More recently, her poetry appeared in the first issue of ottawater , the ongoing Peter F. Yacht Club , and the anthologies Written in the Skin Shadowy Technicians: New Ottawa Poets (2000) and Groundswell: best of above/ground press, 1993-2003 (2003), as well as the forthcoming anthology decalogue: ten Ottawa fiction writers (Chaudiere Books, 2007). The first season of the new Chaudiere Books catalogue in fall 2006 will also feature her first novel, Desmond Road Book of the Dead , that she has been working on for over a decade.

The Eternities by Marianne Bluger , The St. Thomas Poetry Series, 2005. ISBN 0-9735910-2-1, $20.00 (www.stthomas.on.ca/poetry.cfm). Reviewed by Jesse P. Ferguson , for Bywords Given Marianne Bluger’s recent passing (October 29, 2005), it would be easy to let emotion skew an evaluation of her most recent poetry collection. Eerily enough, it was published on the very day of the award-winning poet’s death. It would be too easy to join the chorus of friends and fellow poets who professed the lasting power of Bluger’s poetry after she lost her battle with cancer. Luckily, insincerity is not needed when extolling this collection. The Eternities is above all dignified. Bluger grapples admirably with themes both universal and intensely personal. Though many of the pieces centre on death—either her own, her father’s or the Jewish people’s during World War II—the collection somehow avoids depressing the reader. Rather, it is a celebration of the saving power of faith, family and art. For instance, the poet makes skilful use of her own dual ancestry (both Christian and Jewish) in such pieces as “Who”: No officious high-church prelate arbiter of human hearts no hard-nosed transposed old law man will be deciding whether I am catechized pure or kosher enough Nor shall any worldling ever withhold my precious dearly-bought-with-human-blood legacy of splintered wood and tattered yellow star (“Who” 35) Bluger here, as in others of her poems, takes hold of religion and ancestry and uses both to stave off jadedness.

English Tanka Poems New poem(s) added: July 24, 2007
In this page I will introduce contemporary English short poems
written in the Tanka style. Tanka is a traditional Japanese poetry.
Haiku is more widely known than Tanka in the Western world,
but actually in Japan Tanka has a longer history than Haiku.
The origin of Tanka dates back to the 5th century.
Haiku has evolved in the 15th century using the part of theTanka form. Tanka in Japanese are written using 31 Japanese syllables
in 5 phrases in one line. The form is fixed in the 5-7-5-7-7 syllable sequence.
However, English Tanka are often written rather freely
using about 20 English syllables in 5 lines. If you are interested in sending your English Tanka poems,
please contact at uzawa@shaw.ca. News: Some long tanka in this page were removed because they didn't sound like tanka (short poem). Before submitting, please check the length of your tanka. Keep about 20 English syllables (about 10 to 15 words, or up to 20 words at max.) (April 1/07) Canada's first English tanka journal GUSTS Click here for details (June 7/06) Two musicians from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (UK) used four tanka poems in this page for their music project for children.

    by Susan Helwig
Seraphim Editions 2001. Susan Helwig's first collection starts with the vigour and probing of youth and ends with the lassitude of middle age. Part 1, "The Garden", is about making poetry and other art forms. "First and Best Morning" is presented as unpunctuated run-on prose cluttered with ampersands, a formlessness that serves as a metaphor for the subject green youth. Like an adolescent raising her voice at the end of every statement, Helwig occasionally uses the interrogative mode "seeing you, is it like angels / who sing to those who never run out of hope?" ("Breakfast at the Midcity") Part II, "Butter, No Butter," reveals the poet's parents. Helwig co-opts the persona of Leo Montag and the story-telling mode of Ursula Hegi in Stones from the Sea (1997) to penetrate the compassionate psyche of her father. Her father's death gives her greater access to her mother. Her narrative techniques range from the Magic Realism of "The Wesch Girls" to the allusive threnody of "Remains of the Night." In the latter poem the reader will recognize the theme of perceived duty to others opposed to one's duty to oneself so central to Ishiguro's novel The Remains of the Day . A saccharine reflection on singing for loved ones, the poem "In Concert" contains the title of the book, and of Part III. It is placed, not coincidentally, in the midst of a catalogue of 'loved ones.' Part IV, "So Far From Home," travels through Europe, with recollections of Ontario. The best poems contain narrative and descriptive content as framework for the more esoteric musings. The "Driver," as
