The Allan Bloom Forum , a student organization at Yale University, holds that ideas have consequences, and in this spirit, seeks to promote the public exploration of the ideas which have shaped American and Western culture. The Forum is named after Allan Bloom, who was a professor at Yale, and was best known for authoring The Closing Of The American Mind, the book which launched much of today's debate about the nature of education and the Western canon. The Forum invites distinguished individuals from academia, media, and related institutions to speak on cultural, historical, philosophical, and political subjects of general interest. Past topics have ranged from "The Institutionalization Of The Counter-Culture" to "The Crisis Of Conservatism In The Post-Cold War Era" to "The Uses Of The Past." Upcoming guests include Mary Lefkowitz, professor of Greek and Latin at Wellesley College and author of Not Out of Africa and Black Athena Revisited; and Edwin R. Reviewed by Leslie Friedman Goldstein, Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Delaware. Email: LESL@UDEL.EDU (For the non-cognoscenti, Maimonides is perhaps the most revered rabbi of Jewish history, and is known, among other things, for having propounded the Thirteen Articles of Faith, which all good Jews are supposed to believe.) So the remark came across as shocking, and, to an intellectually hungry undergraduate, delightful. My curiosity about Leo Strauss was aroused. The next thing I remember about Leo Strauss came a couple of years later. I was hooked. Not until some years later did I start to hear remarks about Straussians being political conservatives. For a time, I thought no more about it. All-told, I took courses from Leo Strauss and from many of his former students, Joe Cropsey, Herbert Storing, Walter Berns, Allan Bloom, Robert Goldwin, Richard Kennington (and sat in on one by Muhsin Mahdi), but I played the field; I also took theory courses from Richard Flathman, Hannah Arendt, David Easton, David Greenstone (and, in recent years, sat in on some lectures by Derrida). Much later I learned that I was not alone.

Our Listless Universities ALLAN BLOOM Today a young person does not generally go off to the university with the expectation of having an intellectual adventure, of discovering strange new worlds, of finding out what the comprehensive truth about man is. Instead, the primary concern of our best universities is to indoctrinate social attitudes, to 'socialize,' rather than to educate. The result is true philistinism, a withering of taste and a conformity to what is prevalent in the present. …It means the young have no heroes, no objects of aspiration. It is all both relaxing and boring, a soft imprisonment.
Allan Bloom
The heads of the young are stuffed with a jargon derived from the despair of European thinkers, gaily repackaged for American consumption and presented as the foundation for a pluralistic society. That jargon becomes a substitute for real experiences and instinct: one suspects that modern thought has produced an artificial soul to replace the old one supplied by nature, which was full of dangerous longings, loves, hates, and awes. The new soul's language consists of terms like value, ideology, self

The challenge of modern freedom, or the combination of isolation and freedom which confronts you, is to make yourself up. The danger
is that you may emerge from the process as a not-entirely-human creature.
-Saul Bellow Ravelstein Saul Bellow's affectionate roman a clef about the renowned professor Allan Bloom, author of the surprise bestseller The Closing of the American Mind : How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today's Students Allan Bloom 1930-1992), stirred up quite a ruckus, because it revealed to the public (it was apparently well known to his friends, students, and colleagues) that Bloom was a homosexual who had died of AIDs, not liver failure has had been pronounced the cause of death. Yet in the novel, Bloom (Abe Ravelstein) specifically requires of Bellow (Chick) that he write a memoir of him when he is gone and since Ravelstein is honest to a fault, especially with his friends, it's hard to imagine that Bloom would have objected to Bellow merely being truthful. More importantly, Bloom's homosexualitywell, really the early and unnecessary death that his homosexuality caused, ''destroyed by his reckless sex habits", is how Chick puts itis the mystery that lies at the core of the book. There would be no tension to the book without it and without our expectation that Bellow will eventually unravel the mystery, and the ultimate failure of the book is that he never does, perhaps can not.

Purpose and Objectives
The overarching purpose of this advanced-level seminar is to enhance and sharpen our abilities to analyze, interpret, design, and evaluatefrom a variety of perspectivesundergraduate and graduate academic programs (curricula) in colleges and universities. As a beginning point, we can broadly define curriculum as a representation of those attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, skills, and pedagogical practices that have been adopted by faculty, students, and administrators. As such, the curriculum can provide us with valuable insights into the cultural, political, social, and intellectual priorities of colleges and universities.
