"If you've got something to say," Nolan Miller advised, "hire a hall." I heard these words as a sophomore at Antioch College, where Nolan chaired the English department and led a writing workshop. Later I would learn that movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn had expressed much the same sentiment. ("If I want to send a message I'll call Western Union.") Either way it was music to my ears . Because I didn't have anything to say, and I had no messages to send. I wanted to be a writer, I was in fact already in the process of becoming a writer, but not because I wanted to reveal the secrets of the Universe, none of which had as yet disclosed themselves to me. I just wanted to have a shelf of books out there with my name on them. I figured it would be a gratifying way to make a living, and might even render me attractive to women. But remarkably, I never got another idea for a science-fiction story. I read a fair amount of it, and I know many science-fiction writers, and certainly respect them, but I can't seem to write it myself." This interview with Lawrence Block is jinxed. It's gotta be after all, it started out more than a year ago, with a sit-down at Jerry's Famous Deli in Los Angeles' oh-so-trendy Westwood Village, but it wound up only a few minutes ago when I checked my e-mail. In between, there was a string of delays, postponements, blown deadlines, missed connections, bad timing and just plain bad luck. As January Magazine 's designated Block expert, it was my job to find out what was up with this four-time Edgar Award winner, five-time Shamus winner, Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America and arguably the best detective writer in the business right now. Our first meeting took place shortly after the publication of

Fiona Walker Tribute to Lawrence Block In 2005 Lawrence Block was given the Gumshoe Award for Lifetime Achievement. I first “met” Lawrence Block thirteen years ago. I was new to the mystery genre and still discovering authors and developing my taste for the different types of stories. With Art Bourgeau’s invaluable The Mystery Lover’s Companion (Crown, 1986) at hand, I was reading my way through the genre, trying on different writers like my wife tries on shoes. On one of my trips to the bookstore, I picked up a paperback copy of A Dance at the Slaughterhouse . Bourgeau had highly recommended Block and I was discovering that I liked detective novels, so this seemed like a natural choice. And was it ever. From the very start, I was blown away. Here was an author who seemed to be writing specifically for me. The plot was dark and suspenseful; the prose was razor sharp, the dialogue crisp and precise. And the characters…Oh, those characters! Mick Ballou, T.J., Jim Grogan, Elaine and all the rest; multi-dimensional, expertly-crafted players who seemed ripped, not from the pages of a book, but from life itself. I had never read a detective like Matt Scudder before. Deep, dark, conflicted and ever so real, Scudder was the protagonist from our dreams, a mythic archetype who never descended into the mundane world of parody or clich©. He was tough and smart and tenacious, the kind of man you’d want working on the case if you ever really needed a detective.

GRIFTER'S GAME by Lawrence Block (Hard Case Crime 2004)
So you're set to publish an ambitious line of classic hardboiled/noir reprints and original fiction inspired by said classics . . . where the hell do you begin?!? Hard Case Crime is Charles Ardai's baby, and he decided to start with Lawrence Block's Gold Medal paperback original, Mona , retitled and outfitted with a snazzy new classic-style Chuck Pyle cover illustration. Considering how many truly awesome novels Ardai must have had to choose from (even taking rights-wrangling into account), there's little point in arguing he might have chosen better ; in any case, Grifter's Game is certainly worthy of the designation HCC-001.
Which isn't necessarily to say it'll knock everyone's socks off. Block's a little too good for his own good here; he makes it look a little too easy to pull off a fairly complex story like this, and the freshness of some plot twists may seem muted by how solidly he delivers on genre expectations. What makes this an excellent starting point for Hard Case is how typical it is, in all the best senses of the word. It's a great overture, perfectly setting the tone for everything that follows.

Book Review: Lucky at Cards by Lawrence Block
Written by Bill Sherman Published February 20, 2007 See also: Book Review: LL Cool J’s Platinum Workout by LL Cool J , Dave Honig, and Jeff O'Connell Book Review: ... by Virginia Fellows Lucky at Cards (Hard Case Crime Books) is what snagged my eyes: the image of a too-knowing dame in a form-revealing dress, cigarette in one hand and the ace of spades in the other, yet another upturned ace falling and casting a shadow over a fulsome breast. "He handled cards like a master," the front cover text teases, "BUT COULD HE HANDLE HER?" Well, just one look at that woman, and you already know what the answer is.
Cards ' flawed protagonist is a professional cardsharp named Bill Maynard. Drummed out of the Windy City when he's caught palming cards by a bunch of hard guys, Maynard lands in an unnamed burg where he quickly latches onto a group of poker-playing country clubbers. Chief among these is lawyer Murray Rogers, whose spouse quickly picks up the fact that Bill is a "card mechanic." Wife Joyce is, of course, the woman on the cover: ripe "with hooker's hips and queen-sized breasts and a belly that had just the right amount of bulge to it." Yearning to escape her bourgeois life, she seduces Maynard and persuades him to concoct a plot that'll take her husband out of the picture.

Diamond Geezer : An Appreciation of the work of Lawrence Block by Simon Kernick
I first came across the name Lawrence Block in a musty second-hand bookshop near London’s Kings Cross. It was the autumn of 1996, the weather was bad, and so was my mood. I was in a job I hated, my boss was putting a lot of pressure on me, and I needed something to lighten my load. That’s the beauty of a good book. It helps you escape, and at that time escape was exactly what I needed. As I perused the shelves of the crime section, a title jumped right out at me: A Walk Among the Tombstones As a writer, I can’t tell you how hard it is to come up with a good title for a book - something eye-catching, original, and compelling - but this was it. I picked it up, saw that the author was someone I hadn’t heard about, and started reading. It took me less than ten lines to know that I was on to something good. The dark, sardonic voice of unlicensed New York PI, Matt Scudder, dragged me straight into the story, his calm, explanatory words somehow making the bloody murder at the end of the first chapter far more shocking than it could otherwise have been. I immediately bought the slightly dog-eared copy, read it in one day, and finished it thinking that in Lawrence Block I’d come across someone who tears up the rulebook governing the conventions of crime fiction, with stunningly impressive results. I was also hoping he’d written a few more books. And he had. Boy, he had.
