(pseuds: William Ard, Jill Emerson, Chip Harrison, Paul Kavanagh, Sheldon Lord, Andrew Shaw)
Lawrence Block is a one of the most successful crime writers around, both critically and commercially. He's created several very different series characters: sex-crazy teenager Chip Harrison ; sleepless, reluctant spy Evan Tanner ; easy-going, good-natured burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr , quirky, conflicted assassin Keller ; plucky little criminal lawyer Martin Ehrengraf who has never lost a case, ever; and his prize creation, tormented alcoholic (and then recovering alcoholic) private eye Matt Scudder . He has published articles and short fiction in American Heritage Redbook Playboy GQ EQMM , and The New York Times, and has published several collections of short fiction in book form. He's a Grand Master of Mystery Writers of America, has won the Edgar and Shamus awards four times and the Japanese Maltese Falcon award twice, as well as the Nero Wolfe award. In France, he has been proclaimed a Grand Maitre du Roman Noir and has twice been awarded the Societe 813 trophy. He has been a guest of honor at Bouchercon and at book fairs and mystery festivals around the world, and has been presented with the key to the city of Muncie, Indiana. He is a past president of the Private Eye Writers of America and the Mystery Writers of America. Not bad for a guy who, early in his career, cranked out porn paperbacks, lesbian and otherwise, under assorted pseudonyms. In fact, Block is so well-regarded now that in publishers are bringing out pricy hardcover limited editions of Block's "risque" PBOs, that he originally wrote under pen names such as Andrew Shaw, Sheldon Lord and Jill Emerson.

I am not aware of any conscious or unconscious effort I make to fit in. I don't feel that fitting in is required. I feel that I am fully assimilated...
I don't even have any sense of what I expect to be my legacy in any respect. I'll probably leave some books behind. I don't know if there is anything specifically Jewish about them or that anyone will care about any of the work for longer than it takes for the body to cool down.

Evan, Bernie and Matt Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Lawrence Block is a remarkably prolific, remarkably versatile author of at least three different mystery series, as well as quite a few singletons. I was introduced to his work in August of 1998, and had read most of three of his series by the end of that year. I recommend them highly.
    Bernie Rhodenbarr
Bernie Rhodenbarr is a Manhattan burglar and bookseller who has an unfortunate tendency to find corpses in the apartments he's burgling. The Bernie books are consistently amusing and enjoyable. The following list includes all of the Bernie books I've read to date, in no particular order. I should say, order doesn't matter much with this particular series.

    Talking Mystery With Lawrence Block
By Claire E. White A Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster and the winner of three Edgar and four Shamus awards, bestselling novelist Lawrence Block is one of our most prolific mystery writers, with over 50 books to his credit. But it is his compelling writing style and his ability to juggle several very different series characters without repeating himself which really impresses. His first popular creation was Evan Tanner, the Cold War era spy who never sleeps (his sleep center was destroyed in the Korean War). Part James Bond, part Bertie Wooster, and part Sir Lancelot, Tanner hops his way from country to country and from beautiful companion to beautiful companion doing super secret spy work, stumbling into nascent revolutions, and supporting obscure political causes. Tanner was placed in deep freeze at the end of the 1960s, and, to the immense delight of his fans, was unfrozen just last year in the bestselling Tanner on Ice . For those that love a good humorous caper story, it doesn't get any better than the Tanner novels. Another humorous character is perennial adolescent Chip Harrison; Block wrote the somewhat more racy Harrison novels under a pseudonym; they have recently been re-published under his own name.
