He and his friends Tim Powers and K. W. Jeter were mentored by Philip K. Dick . Along with Tim Powers he invented the poet William Ashbless . Blaylock and Powers have often collaborated with each other on writing stories, including "The Better Boy", "On Pirates", and "The William Ashbless Memorial Cookbook". Blaylock is also currently director of the Creative Writing Conservatory at the Orange County High School of the Arts , where Powers is Writer in Residence.

Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by James Blaylock
This is a brief discussion of James Blaylock and, of course, of some books by James Blaylock
A Few Words About James Blaylock
James Blaylock has managed the impressive feat of writing books of enduring quality in at least four distinct modes or styles. Those styles can be set up in quite a number of interesting similarity groupings, but let us first see what they are. Using names I will explain below, they are his:
  • G. Smithers tales; steampunk tales; ghost tales; and, California tales.
The G. Smithers Tales
These include the three "Escargot" books and The Magic Spectacles (that last shares a number of concepts with the "Escargot" books but is clearly not connected). I call those books "G. Smithers tales" because in each of them we have recurring references to a "G. Smithers of Brompton Village" who is the author of seemingly countless delightful novels of a very definite typethe type that Blaylock's "G. Smithers" novels are.
That type of novel is a genteel descendant of the great adventure tales of old

REFERENCES Science Fiction Fantasy
With the recent release of his latest novel " All the Bells on Earth ", James P. Blaylock has proved himself to be among the front-running authors working in speculative fiction. The interest in his work has prompted the re-release of some of his earlier works, and some new works, in deluxe, illustrated editions. For the Blaylock reader, these three books are extremely well-produced, beautifully illustrated and well worth the various premium prices you're likely to have to pay after you've managed to hunt them down. Yes, the packages are wonderful; but it's the content that matters, and the content in these books most certainly lives up to the deluxe packaging. In "Doughnuts", Blaylock offers us another glimpse at Walt, the main character of "All the Bells on Earth", and into the heart of obsession, compulsion and release. It's a small story, barely filling up the 58 pages, even when padded with an introduction by Lewis Shiner, an appreciation by Lucius Shepard and an afterword by Tim Powers. But it's a great Blaylock story, filled with the same tiny observations and bits of humor that make his other work so unique. In this story he eschews the supernatural and weird in favor of the mundane and commonplace, with excellent results. The other contributor's offer insights into this and other work, while the illustrations, which are simply pasted-in photos by the author's wife, are perfectly evocative of the kind of shenanigans in which Blaylock specializes. Phil Park's cover is literally the icing on the cake, in this case, a cake doughnut.

Author Biography and Bibliography
James P. Blaylock grew up in southern California and, with the exception of some time spent in coastal northern California, he has lived in Orange County all his life. He teaches composition and creative writing at Chapman University; in fact, he has been a writing teacher since 1976, about the same time that he sold his first short story, "Red Planet," to Unearth magazine. He has written fourteen novels as well as dozens of short stories, essays, and articles. Among his recent novels are Night Relics, an atmospheric ghost story set in the Santa Ana Mountains and the city of Orange; The Paper Grail, a foggy and fantastic romance set along the Mendocino coast in northern California; All the Bells on Earth, a Faustian mystery that transpires in the old neighborhoods of downtown Orange during a rainy and unusual Christmas season; and Winter Tides, a ghost-and-murer mystery set in Huntington Beach. His latest novel, The Rainy Season, was published in August of 1999. Blaylock is a two-time winner of the World Fantasy Award, most recently for his short story "Thirteen Phantasms." His story "Unidentified Objects" was included in

"Small Houses" by James P. Blaylock: An Appreciation by Amy Sterling Casil
I might have overestimated Jim's sense of humor in the past. Or, it may just be that I'm older, and I see so much more clearly how immensely touching his writing is. How the words are laden with quiet emotion.
I might well be writing my first comments on a story that was reviewed previously by others online. According to one well-known SF/F reviewer, "Sci Fiction presents the wonderful and whimsical nostalgic reveries of a dying man in "Small Houses" by James P. Blaylock."

    The Plot
On receiving the news that he has been willed a rare sketch by the Japanese artist Hoku-sai, Howard Barton returns to his old stomping grounds in Northern California. Once there, he quickly, if unexpectedly, falls in with a group more or less led by his eccentric Uncle Roy, the perennially improvident proprietor of a haunted museum. Roy’s group includes his wife, Edith; his attractive daughter, Sylvia; Artemis Jimmers, an aged, oddball inventor; Mr. Bennett, a handyman with a predilection for making and displaying huge plywood cutouts on his property; and, in the...
