Jump to: navigation search Susanna Blamire poetess , was of good Cumberland family, and received the sobriquet of The Muse of Cumberland. Her poems, which were not collected until , depict Cumbrian life and manners with truth and vivacity. She also wrote some fine songs in the Scottish dialect , including Ye shall walk in Silk Attire, and What ails this Heart o' Mine. Modern addition: "Susanna Blamire was an exceptional poet living in an isolated rural area of Cumberland during the eighteenth century. Susanna was young. She was beautiful. Her dark eyes sparkled with animation, and during the winter months of the Carlisle social season she was a huge asset. At the very heart of Susanna’s poetry there was a joyful hedonism. But despite this delight in pleasure, her writing was pierced by a compassionate realism that spoke of the pain and transience of human life. She lost both parents in childhood, endured the emotional calamity of thwarted romance with an aristocrat, and suffered from a recurrent and severe form of Rhematic Heart Disease which killed her at the age of 47. Apart from poetry Blamire wrote songs, accompanied on a guitar or flageolet. She was renowned for her high spirits and skills as a dancer. If she met travelling musicians on the road she would dismount and dance to a jig or hornpipe. Her enthusiasm for her poetic art was such that she pinned scraps of verse to oak trees outside Thackwood, where passers-by could read this strange but elegant flowering.

Muse of Cumberland (1747-1794)
Susanna Blamire was a Scottish poet and writer who was widely known as "The Muse of Cumberland". She was born sometime in the year 1747 to a well-to-do Cumberland family and it wasn't until the year 1842 that her poems were collected and published. One of the most outstanding features of Blamire's work was the truth and liveliness in which she depicted Cumbrian life and society in those days. The Poetical Works of Miss Susanna Blamire, "the Muse of Cumberland, in 1842. Songs and Poems by Miss Blamire Together with Songs by her Friend Miss Gilpin, Susanna Blamire was a resident of Scotland for a period of six years beginning in 1761 during which time she was heavily influenced by the immense popularity of Scottish dialect songs all over Europe. So telling was the Scottish influence on Blamire that she was moved to begin writing songs in the Scottish dialect and these Scottish songs would later make up the majority of her dialect songs with the Cumbrian dialect ones coming in at second. Blamire is perhaps best known for her Scottish song "And Ye Shall Walk in Silk Attire".

Susanna Blamire
From LoveToKnow 1911
SUSANNA BLAMIRE (1747-1794), English poet, daughter of a Cumberland yeoman , was born at Cardew Hall, near Dalston, in January 1747. Her mother died while she was a child, and she was brought up by her aunt, a Mrs Simpson of Thackwood, who sent her niece to the village school at Raughton Head. Susanna Blamire's earliest poem is "Written in a Churchyard , on seeing a number of cattle grazing," in imitation of Gray . She lived an uneventful life among the farmers of the neighbourhood, and her gaiety and good- humour made her a favourite in rustic society. In 1767 her elder sister Sarah married Colonel Graham of Gartmore. "An Epistle to her friends at Gartmore" gives a playful description of the monotonous simplicity of her life. To her Perthshire visits her songs in the Scottish vernacular are no doubt partly due. Her chief friend was Catharine Gilpin of Scaleby Castle . The two ladies spent the winters together in Carlisle, and wrote poems in common. Susanna Blamire died in Carlisle on the 5th of April 1794. The poems which were not collected during her lifetime, were first published in 1842 by Henry Lonsdale as The Poetical Works of Miss Susanna Blamire, "the Muse of Cumberland,"

Reviews of A Passionate Poet: Susanna Blamire Christopher Hugh Maycock A portrait of the eighteenth-century Cumberland poet. From The Review of English Studies , New Series, Vol 55, No 222, Oxford University Press 2004 Reviewed by Professor Duncan Wu, St Catherine's College, Oxford …Christopher Maycock, argues eloquently for critical reassessment…His research is meticulous, and his findings are written up with care…The result is a portrait as rounded and compelling as anyone could have managed given the comparative lack of information, which goes a good deal further than any previous biographical treatment… …The point of his 'portrait' is to bring Blamire back into critical view, and this he does with ease and elegance…a timely reminder that Blamire is a writer of considerable power whose work merits attention. It is also a reminder to those who have incorporated Hannah More, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, and Charlotte Smith into the undergraduate syllabus that there is another woman poet of the time equally deserving of scrutiny. Reviewer: Catherine Nicholls from Somerset Reviewer: Keith Gregson from Sunderland I have long been a fan of Susanna Blamire and have restored a number of her songs in recent years. I also sing them. For a long time I have felt that Susanna has been 'unsung' in many ways and in need of exposure as she is an important literary figure. Ironically if she had been born a few miles further north - across the Scottish border - she may have gained greater attention.

14. Susanna Blamire (1747-1794)
Biographical and critical essay of the Cumberland poet.
http://www.alexanderstreet2.com/SWRPLive/bios/S7021-D001.html
Editors Note: SB's mother died when she was seven, after which she was brought up by an aunt, educated at the village school. She liked dancing, "doctoring" and playing her guitar. She wrote poems as a child, which do not survive. She visited London and Ireland, but visited a sister in Scotland often, and used Scottish dialect for her "Cumbrian Songs". She lived in Scotland from 1773 and later in Carlisle with Catherine Gilpin (1738-1811). Susanna Blamire (1747-1794) By Becky Lewis Critical Essay In 1994, a memorial tablet was placed in Carlisle Cathedral in Cumberland commemorating Susanna Blamire (1747-1794) as "Poet of humour and observation who caught the authentic voice of Cumberland." In the same year, the Lakeland Dialect Society published a bicentenary tribute, Susanna Blamire, "The Muse of Cumberland." Jonathan Wordsworth contributed a Foreword in which he recalls that she originally wrote her poetry for family and friends and dubs her "the poet of friendship." Susanna Blamire never published during her lifetime. The poetry and songs she wrote as entertainment were distributed in manuscript among friends and relatives (Gilpin 8). While some of her songs may be published in songbooks of the period, they were never signed. We owe our knowledge of the work to the collaboration of Patrick Maxwell and Henry Lonsdale, who grew up in Cumberland where Blamire lived most of her life and where her poetry and songs have been remembered for generations. In 1842, Lonsdale and Maxwell first collected her work, finding it in several places, including a collection of Robert Anderson, a later Cumberland poet who admired Blamire's work, the commonplace books of Blamire's friends, and Blamire's fair copies saved by members of her family. In the same way, Maxwell and Lonsdale gathered information about her life. In 1842, they published her poems in
