My obliviousness never fails to astound me. I recall reading one story by Michael Bishop that had a religious theme (it was about a computer simulation of the trial of Judas) but somehow, until recently I remained unaware of his broader interest in religious ideas , or that he considered himself a Christian.
This is from an interview in 2000 with Nick Gevers
NG: Considering your work as a whole, your authorial philosophy seems liberal and humane, very moral in its emphasis much of the time. Is this assessment accurate? And what influences personal and literary have made you the writer that you are?
Earlier I mentioned outrage as a motivating factor for a lot of my work. The novel Stolen Faces exemplifies an early, rather bitter examination of the same theme, and yet I firmly believe as a Christian, as a humanist, and as a writer that we have it in our capacity to rectify the unjust situations and attitudes that inevitably produce outrage in the righteous. If the ground under my literary ambition has any solidity, it the solidity derives from this belief." Posted by Elliot at 8:02 PM Labels: Science fiction fantasy and faith

INTRODUCTION
Michael Bishop is principally known for his speculative fiction, but to those familiar with his work it will come as no shock that he is also a poet whose work has appeared in publications as diverse as The Georgia Review and The Anthology of Speculative Poetry (Volume Three). An early collection of his poetry, , epitomized the phrase 'slim volume,' being a chapbook limited to a run of 100 copies; a more recent volume of Bishop's verse, Time Pieces , had a somewhat larger printing. But there's a definite flavor and touch of the poetic to Bishop's writing even when he's not composing verse. Indeed, the virtues of poetry infuse his prose efforts: his story-craft is disciplined, euphonous, with even his longer works evincing a certain spareness and economy. Most mysterious is how Bishop pulls a story from notional mist, seeming to create it before the reader's eyes. In the 2000 collection of four novellas

BIOGRAPHY
Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop Michael D. Bishop is in his final term as the state Senator representing the cities of Auburn Hills, Keego Harbor, Lake Angelus, Sylvan Lake, Pontiac, Rochester and Rochester Hills, and the townships of Addison, Independence, Oakland, Orion and Oxford. Before being elected to represent the citizens of Senate District 12, Mike Bishop served two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives. Following the 2006 election, Mike Bishop was nominated by his caucus, and chosen by his peers, to be the leader of the Senate. As head of the Republican Caucus, Senator Bishop directs the agenda and is the lead spokesman for GOP policies in Michigan. As a husband, father of three, and life-long resident of Michigan, Senator Bishop is focused on making the state an attractive place for families to live and companies to invest. Since taking office in January, Senator Bishop and his colleagues have worked to implement an agenda based upon the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, and common-sense values. Senator Bishop's top priorities are first, resolving the budget crisis for the current and following fiscal years; lowering the cost of health care for Michigan families; replacing the state's job-killing business tax; consolidating and restructuring state government to find savings; and, finally, protecting our cherished natural resources from the degradation of pollution and out-of-state trash.

John Michael Bishop
American virologist and co-winner (with Harold Varmus) of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1989 for achievements in clarifying the origins of cancer.
Bishop graduated from Gettysburg College (Pa.) in 1957 and from Harvard Medical School in 1962. After spending two years in internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, he became a researcher in virology at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. In 1968 he joined the faculty of the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, becoming a full professor in 1972. From 1981 he also served as director of the university's George F. Hooper Research Foundation. In 1970 Bishop teamed up with Varmus, and they set out to test the theory that healthy body cells contain dormant viral oncogenes that, when triggered, cause cancer. Working with the Rous sarcoma virus, known to cause cancer in chickens, Bishop and Varmus found that a gene similar to the cancer-causing gene within the virus was also present in healthy cells. In 1976 Bishop and Varmus, together with two colleaguesDominique Stehelin and Peter Vogtpublished their findings, concluding that the virus had taken up the gene responsible for the cancer from a normal cell. After the virus had infected the cell and begun its usual process of replication, it incorporated the gene into its own genetic material. Subsequent research showed that such genes can cause cancer in several ways. Even without viral involvement, these genes can be converted by certain chemical carcinogens into a form that allows uncontrolled cellular growth.

Sensible gun laws needed,
" an opinion piece by Michael Bishop in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution . What he said.
After living in a country for nine months where guns are banned, I tend to take a stricter view of gun control than Mike does; I'd like to see guns go away, period. But I know that's never going to happen. Still, measures can definitely be taken to ensure that horrific events like what happened at Virginia Tech to my good friend and 32 others are far less likely to happen again.
