Address by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge to NC Legislators
Justice Preaching Archive Address by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge to NC Legislators and the Public 3rd Annual Latino Day at the General Assembly (May 1, 2007) Today the Latino community living in North Carolina and their supporters are here to speak in favor of their presence in our great State. I am here to voice my support for them. Our country has always been a nation of immigrants. Many years ago, my ancestors emigrated from Ireland to begin a new life in the United States. Today, 11.5% of the US population is foreign-born. 100 years ago, it was approximately 15%. Reliable studies show that immigrants pay taxes and provide between $20 to $30 billion dollars more than the amount of government services they use. It is estimated they will contribute $500 billion dollars toward our social security system over the next 20 years. The contributions of immigrants over the course of our national history have clearly shown that we are a great nation because of the gifts they brought to us. As a Catholic bishop, I wish to express my gratitude for the Latinos who live in North Carolina. They have shown themselves to be hard workers and possessing strong family values. The overwhelming number of immigrants in our State are here because they have not been able to obtain the basic human need for work that provides a just and living wage in their country of origin.

In an article in The Sunday Telegraph , Dr Nazir-Ali said that multiculturalism had turned some communities into “no go” areas. “Those of a different faith or race may find it difficult to live or work there because of hostility to them,” he wrote. He also said it was becoming increasingly difficult for Christianity to be the nation’s public religion in a multifaith multicultural society. He said: “If it had not been for the black majority churches and the recent arrival of people from central and eastern Europe, the Christian cause in many of our cities would have looked a lost one. “At last it seems the Government may be waking up to the situation; to the importance of English as a means of communication, to greater integration in housing, schools and leisure pursuits and in citizenship education.” A friend of mine has written a profound rebuttal to the Rev. The British should be ashamed that it took an immigrant cleric to point out the glaringly apparent, but they are not. Instead, they are busy denying the obvious and making nice with the perpetrators. Now Bishop Nazir-Ali is sounding like post-scandal James Watson. Another lost opporutunity!

Bishop Michael J. Sheridan of Colorado Springs to
Preside over Thomas Aquinas College Convocation
(August 4, 2006) The day will begin with a Mass of the Holy Spirit at which Bishop Sheridan will be the principal celebrant and preach the homily. Matriculation will follow, with faculty and members of the college's governing board in academic regalia. During the ceremony, longtime chaplain and newly-appointed Assistant Dean for Religious Affairs, Rev. Wilfred Borden, O.M.I., will administer the Oath of Fidelity to new members of the teaching faculty and lead them in a profession of faith.
Says President Thomas E. Dillon, "The faculty of the college are the key to our success. With their intelligence, their discipline, and their humility, they serve not only as guides for our students in pursuit of truth, but also models of the intellectual and moral virtues. When recruiting new faculty members, these are the qualities we look for, and I am delighted to have appointed three new members to this impressive group."

My youth held little forecast of a career in biomedical research. I was born on February 22, 1936, in York, Pennsylvania, and spent my childhood in a rural area on the west bank of the Susquehanna River. Those years were pastoral in two regards: I saw little of metropolitan life until I was past the age of twenty-one; and my youth was permeated with the concerns of my father's occupation as a Lutheran minister, tending to two small parishes. My most tangible legacy from then is a passion for music, sired by the liturgy of the church, fostered by my parents through piano, organ and vocal lessons. I am deeply grateful for the legacy, albeit apostate from the church.
I obtained eight years of elementary education in a two-room school, where I encountered a stern but engaging teacher who awakened my intellect with instruction that would seem rigorous today in many colleges. History figured large in the curriculum, exciting for me what was to become an enduring interest. But I heard little of science, and what I did hear was exemplified by the collection and pressing of wild flowers. My high school was also small: eighty students graduated with me, few of whom eventually completed college. Tests conducted before I graduated predicted a future for me in journalism, forestry or the teaching of music; persons who know me well could recognize some truth in those seemingly errant prognoses.

Certainly that would be reflected in my guestimate of what went on in the our Cathedral.  Midnight Communion, despite a potentially disastrous shower of rain at abot 11pm produced a mammoth congregation, whilst the main service on Christmas Day morning more than held its own.  Anecdotally, even when you factor out exaggerated claims, evidence from clergy would seem to indicate larger congregations this year. Susan Wiegand Nothing ever suggested to young J. Michael Bishop that science and research would bring him fame and fortune. Born in York, Pennsylvania, population 400, the son of a Lutheran minister, Bishop spent his youth hammering out hymns on the organ in his father's church. A psychological test conducted at his high school suggested that perhaps he would be a good music teacher or forest ranger. "No mention of science," Bishop recalled. The future Nobel Laureate in Biology went off to study liberal arts at Gettysburg College, earning a pre-med minor. His scientific brilliance soon began to assert itself, and he was admitted to Harvard University to study medicine. For the young man from the Pennsylvania countryside, Boston was paradise: theaters and museums and a symphony! Not to mention the wealth of universities, overflowing with the best and the brightest students from all over the world. His research earned him accolades, but the lesson of his childhood expectations kept him wide-eyed at his own success. Even as a professor of biology at the University of California San Francisco, he would never have guessed that when young Harold Varmus walked into his laboratory and asked to work with him, that the mentorship would turn into a research partnership and eventually earn both of them the highest recognition accorded to scientists.
