BISHOP MICHAEL JOSEPH KANIECKI, S.J. Served as Bishop: 1985-2000 (born 1935-2000)
The day after he was consecrated a bishop, he stood next to Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan at the Fairbanks International Airport. He was a pilot for over 35 years. His coat of arms carries an airplane propeller and the motto: "TO LOVE AND TO SERVE." As Bishop of Fairbanks, on wing and on wheel, he traveled far and wide throughout his 409,849 square mile missionary diocese, conferring the Sacrament of Holy Orders on men, both Native and white, and the Sacrament of confirmation on countless young and old, blessing new churches, meeting and greeting, loving and serving the widely scattered flocks entrusted to his pastoral care. And it was while loving and serving one of his remote flocks in the bush Alaska that the Lord he loved and served above all called him out of this life. Michael Kaniecki was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 13, 1935. Already as a young boy he felt called to the priesthood. He was however, at the time drawn also to an outdoor, wilderness lifestyle, having spent a good part of his youth in northern Michigan and in northern Canada hunting, fishing and trapping. (In more recent years he hunted only with a camera.) As he neared the end of his high school years, he found himself facing a kind of dilemma: to lead the life of a priest? or a more outdoor type of life?. Then he was granted a scholarship to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. However, he failed to pass the physical, needed to have surgery, had to wait a year. During that year he learned about Alaska and its challenges, and saw that therein lay the answer to his dilemma. In Alaska he could serve as a priest and at the same time live in an environment so very much in keeping with his natural inclinations.

Questioning the "wisdom" of abortion Thirty-four years ago, on January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States handed down its infamous Roe v. Wade decision, setting up the current situation in which there is little or no legal protection for unborn human life in our country.
The Catholic Church, many other churches and many of the American people have never been at ease with abortion. Recent polls have indicated that as time goes on more and more people are questioning the wisdom of legalized abortion. Over the years, the Catholic Church has applied its traditional moral principles and developed a body of pro-life teaching that is principled and consistent. The principle is the sacredness of human life, a gift of the Creator. It follows that humans must respect the gift of life. These principles are applied to issues old and new. Some are listed below: Abortion. The Church holds that human life begins at conception. Thus, the human embryo deserves respect. It cannot be manipulated, experimented upon or destroyed at will. Like all human life, it deserves the protection of law.
As stated above, more and more Americans are uneasy with legalized abortion, but some also want to allow for exceptions in case of rape, incest and danger to the life of the mother. Though pregnancy from rape and incest is rare, it does occur, and this is a very sad and diffi cult situation for many reasons. But if abortion is wrong because it is the taking of innocent human life, how do circumstances change that fact? It is still the killing of an innocent human being. This is one instance of the consistent application of a moral principle.

Album Release Party for
Bishop Michael V. Kelsey
And The New Samaritan Mass Choir's
"Masterpeace"
(Featuring the Hit Single, "Run and Tell That")
From the front pew to the balcony of the 1,240-seat, New Samaritan Baptist Church, people anxiously packed the Washington, DC, sanctuary to experience Masterpeace, the second album of Bishop Michael V. Kelsey and the New Samaritan Mass Choir. The star-studded album release party, which was held on June 29, 2004, featured a winning ensemble of songwriters, producers, musicians, and artists.
The host of the evening's event, LeNair Holton of Heaven 1580 AM asked the crowd, "Can anything good come out of Northeast, D.C.?" Without a second thought, the audience gave a resounding "Yes" as they knew that a high standard of musical excellence was about to be unveiled. Without a doubt, Bishop Kelsey and the New Samaritan Mass Choir did not disappoint anyone that evening as they made the Lord, and Northeast, D.C., proud.

Bishop Michael Curry's sermon at the U2Charist ...It is good to be in God's house with God's people. Let me offer some words from a Negro spiritual, sung by slaves in the antebellum south. It's a very simple spiritual that basically says, "My soul is a witness for the Lord." Amen! As the successive stanzas and verses of the song, beginning with "My soul is a witness for the Lord" recount different people from the Biblical stories. It begins, for example, with Methuselah (for y'all Episcopalians, Methuselah was old!) It begins with Methuselah and says "Methuselah was a witness for my Lord" and then it goes on and tells the story of other folks, Deborah the Prophet was a witness for my Lord, Queen Esther was a witness for my Lord, Daniel was a witness for my Lord, Mother Mary was a witness for my Lord, Martha was a witness for my Lord... And then, after going through the Biblical story, the singer comes to the last verse and says "Now *who* will be a witness for my Lord?" Moving from the Biblical past to a new Biblical presentwho will be a witness for my Lord? When I was a kid, I grew up Episcopalian. My swaddling clothes were an Episcopal flag!

Islamist No Go Areas - Bishop Michael Ali
First of all we need to identify what the problem is about. It has nothing to do with Islam. Belief in and practice of the Muslim religion is a private matter. It is something for people to choose in the same way as any other religion. It is no threat to anybody and is not a problem of any kind. Islamism, which is the political ideology of Wahhabis, Salafists, Jamaat e Islami and a myriad of other crazy groups who have the creation of a worldwide caliphate as their aim. Some of these groups are more supportive of violence than others, including support for Bin Laden and Al Quaeda. Whatever methods they advocate, all of the Islamist groups are engaged in political action rather than the practice of religion and opposing them is not opposition to the Muslim religion at all. Opposing Islamists and their attempts to dominate everything they can, is a cause in which Christians, Muslims, Atheists and followers of all religions should join. 'We have a mission': Bishop Michael Curry of North Carolina begins Trinity Institute's annual conference

[Episcopal News Service] Bishop Michael Bruce Curry of North Carolina opened Trinity Institute's national conference with a stirring call to reconciliation as the mission of the church. Curry, the first African-American bishop to serve as the head of an Episcopal diocese in the south, approached the conference topic, "The Anatomy of Reconciliationfrom violence to healing," from "a perspective of mission, from a perspective of the urgent necessity of the human species and of the creation of itself." "I want to speak tonight on the subject, very simple, not complex: we have a mission," he told those gathered. "We have work to do, we have life to restore, we have death to destroy, we have a mission." Curry used Isaiah 40:3-5 as the text for his sermon, the story of Nebuchadnezzar's army seizing Jerusalem and making slaves of its inhabitants.
