Jorge Carrera Andrade
The Editors of The Drunken Boat are pleased to present an extensive introduction to the well-known Ecuadorian poet, Jorge Carrera Andrade. This issue contains a selection of Andrade's poetry translated from the Spanish by Steven Ford Brown. by Steven Ford Brown
I cannot remember on another occasion finding a place so clear and free of the torment of the spirit that has now become our daily bread. The images of Jorge Carrera Andrade are so extraordinarily clear, so connected to the primitive I imagine I am... participating in a vision already lost to the world. It is a place melancholy but grand.
— William Carlos Williams
Generally forgotten by American literary critics and anthologists, Ecuadorian Jorge Carrera Andrade (1902-1978) has long been considered by Latin America critics to be one of their most important poets. A country the size of Nevada, Ecuador is bordered by the dense rainforest of the Amazon on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The country interior includes both lush farmland and the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and snow-capped mountains of the Andes. It's a country of startling contrasts. This is where Jorge Carrera Andrade grew up.

WisdomPortal.com Preface: Walking to Margaret Jacks Hall, I noticed that the tiles around Stanford's Quad had an 8-petalled flower logo which resembled the cover of Merwin's The Compass Flower (1977). I got here early and found an aisle seat in the 2nd row. A woman in the front row had a copy of Merwin's Vixen which she borrowed from the Los Altos Library. I asked her to see the book and jotted down some lines which I missed in my notes at yesterday's Merwin reading. Eavan Boland Wen Fu Tao Te Ching , Hamill said it was not a faithful translation as Mitchell doesn't know Chinese. I defended Mitchell saying that he had studied with Korean Zen Master Seung Sahn, and I had attended many of their Dharma Talks at the Cambridge Zen Center. Hamill said "Mitchell's work is not a translation but a rendition. The original Chinese words of Lao Tzu are not even present in Mitchell's version." I then asked, "How about the translations of William Porter (Red Pine) on the Tao Te Ching and Cold Mountain Poems of Han-shan Q: Paradox plays an important role in your poems.

artist, born in Chestertown, Maryland, 16 April, 1741; died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 22 February, 1827. He followed for some time the trade of a saddler in Annapolis, but, having seen a portrait while visiting Norfolk, Virginia, he determined to attempt art, and on his return he executed a likeness of himself. His success induced him to change his vocation from saddle making to portrait painting. He lived in Boston in 1768'9, where he had some instruction from John Singleton Copley , and in 1770 he went to London, England, bearing letters to Benjamin West , who received him kindly, and whose pupil he became. In London, Peale also studied modeling in wax, casting and molding in plaster, engraving in mezzotinto, and miniature painting. He returned to Annapolis in 1774, began painting portraits, and two years later established himself in Philadelphia. Later he became a captain of volunteers, and was present at the

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
John Carroll was born on January 8, 1735, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, the son of Daniel and Eleanor (Darnall) Carroll. Carroll came from a prominent colonial family; his father was a successful Maryland merchant, and his mother, a highly educated woman, was an heiress in one of Maryland's richest families. From 1746 to 1748, Carroll attended Bohemia Manor, a Jesuit academy in northern Maryland. In July of 1748, he went to St. Omer College in French Flanders, a school run by English Jesuits. In 1753, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Watten, Flanders, and took his first religious vows in 1755. Also at Watten, from 1756 to 1757, Carroll studied literature. At the Jesuit college in Liege, between 1757 and 1760, Carroll studied philosophy. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1769 and took his final vows as a Jesuit in 1771.
JOHN CARROLL'S MOTHER
This portrait of Eleanor Darnell Carroll (1703/4-1796) was painted by John Wollaston.
