Elizabeth Bishop was born in Worcester, Massachusetts to William Thomas Bishop and Gertrude Bulmer Bishop. Elizabeth’s father, who was an executive of Bishop Contractors, a family-owned New England construction firm, died of Bright's disease when she was eight months old. In the wake of that event, Bishop’s mother descended into mental illness and was institutionalized in 1916, when Elizabeth was five. Although Bishop’s mother would live until 1934 in an asylum, they would not meet again. Effectively orphaned, Bishop lived with her

Modern Poetry Elizabeth Bishop Elizabeth Bishop, born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1911, had a difficult childhood: her father died when she was very young, and while still in early childhood her mother was permanently hospitalized in a sanitarium. She spent her childhood years living with her grandparents in Nova Scotia, and with relatives in Massachusetts. Bishop attended Vassar College, and afterwards travelled a great deal, living at different times in New York, Key West, Brazil and Boston. She was for many years the Poetry Editor of The Nation magazine. Bishop was Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress [the equivalent to what is now called the Poet Laureate] in 1949-50. In 1955, she received the Pulitzer Prize for . Her book of poems, Questions of Travel , won the National Book Award in 1965. A later book, Geography III , received the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1976. Bishop taught poetry at Harvard and New York University. She died on October 6, 1979. Conversation
The tumult in the heart
keeps asking questions.
And then it stops and undertakes to answer
in the same tone of voice.
No one could tell the difference.
Uninnocent, these conversations start,
and then engage the senses,
only half-meaning to.
And then there is no choice, and then there is no sense; until a name and all its connotation are the same. Portrait Back to Poems in alphabetical order Back to Poems sorted by author

I caught a tremendous fish
and held him beside the boat
half out of water, with my hook
fast in a corner of its mouth.
He hung a grunting weight,
battered and venerable
and homely. Here and there
his brown skin hung in strips
like ancient wallpaper,
and its pattern of darker brown
was like wallpaper: shapes like full-blown roses stained and lost through age. He was speckled with barnacles, fine rosettes of lime, and infested with tiny white sea-lice, and underneath two or three rags of green weed hung down. While his gills were breathing in the terrible oxygen fresh and crisp with blood, I thought of the coarse white flesh packed in like feathers, the big bones and the little bones, the dramatic reds and blacks of his shiny entrails, and the pink swim-bladder like a big peony. I looked into his eyes which were far larger than mine but shallower, and yellowed, the irises backed and packed with tarnished tinfoil seen through the lenses of old scratched isinglass.

She attended two different boarding schools, the North Shore Country Day School in Swampscott, Massachusetts, and Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts, where she contributed to the school newspapers, The Owl and Blue Pencil , respectively. Bishop graduated from Vassar College in 1934. In addition to working on the student newspaper, The Vassar Miscellany , she founded a literary magazine, Con Spirito , with fellow students Mary McCarthy, Eleanor Clark, and Muriel Rukeyser. It was as a Vassar student that Elizabeth Bishop met Marianne Moore. They first met in 1934 when Fanny Borden, the Vassar librarian, arranged an introduction, and their friendship continued until Moore's death in 1972. Elizabeth Bishop traveled extensively in Europe and lived in New York, Key West, Florida, and, for sixteen years, in Brazil. She taught briefly at the University of Washington, at Harvard for seven years, at New York University, and just prior to her death in 1979, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Elizabeth Bishop
American Poet
Elizabeth Bishop now stands as a major mid-twentieth century American poet, whose influence has been felt among several subsequent generations of poets. Highly regarded by critics such as Harold Bloom and Helen Vendler, her rising reputation rests on the admiration of poets, including, among the Americans, James Merrill, John Ashbery and Jorie Graham, and, among world poets, Nobelists Seamus Heaney and Derek Walcott. Her place in the canon of American poetry is secure. At her death in 1979, Bishop's place among poets was less certain. True, she had won many prizes: the Pulitzer, two Guggenheims, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and Brazil's Order of Rio Branco. The author of four volumes of poetry and a number of distinctive short stories, she had translated poems in three languages, as well as prose, notably the Diary of Helena Morley , a memoir of a girl growing up in the inland mountains of Brazil. She had written a volume in the Life World Library on Brazil, and had co-edited

Elizabeth Bishop's poems were always admired for the purity and precision of her descriptions, and now readers have come to see how, even in her early poems, the attention to external detail reveals an internal emotional realm. Bishop's early works use surrealism and imagism to create a new reality in which she minimizes the reference to self in poetry, but her later poems become more autobiographical and more concerned with a quest for personal identity. Academy of American Poets Hear Bishop describe an "egg of fire" disrupting ancient owls, a glistening armadillo, and a baby rabbit in "The Armadillo" at the Academy of American Poets' Bishop site. An essay/exhibit, "Life Studies: American Poetry from T. S. Eliot to Allen Ginsberg," explains why Bishop is considered "one of our most abundant poets."
