Why do "Sci-Fi" people hate comic books?
Submitted by comicbookwriter on April 18, 2006 - 5:14pm. Hey guys, I wanted to throw out a big hello to everyone here. This is my first post, and I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Brandon Easton, I have worked in the sci-fi/comic book biz for a few years now and I tend to spend a lot of time online doing tons of research on the science-fiction community. The one constant I have noticed over the years is the contempt for the comic book MEDIUM that sci-fi novel readers seem to share. It seems that a lot of people confuse the super-hero subgenre as being representative of the entire medium of graphic novel or serialized pamphlet storytelling and that doesn't make sense since the "non-sci-fi" crowd loves to assume that all written science-fiction is nothing more than a Star Trek or Star Wars offshoot. You would think that sci-fi folks would be a little less closeminded.

I'm not really a big Asimov fan but I'm gonna say the biggest difference is the word the in between the words I and robot because I really don't remember a whole hell of a lot about I, Robot and after seeing even part of the Will Smith movie I'm loathe to revisit it. December 8, 2007 2:22 AM

ahhhhhh, I have an issue of Marvel's What If... It is the issue title What If The Avengers had Fought Evil During the 1950s? One of the team members is a robot who looks a lot like the robot in this posted comic. Take a gander at the What If... >Marvel's What If... It is indeed the same character. Marvel actually just revived this robot (named M-11) yet again in 2006 with a six issue mini series called AGENTS OF ATLAS, where M-11 was teamed up with other golden age greats Gorilla Man, Jimmy Woo, Marvel Boy, Namora, and Venus. Their mission: to stop the evil menace, The Yellow Claw! It was a pretty decent series though the ending left me a little cold. I still reccomend it. Click here for more info: http://www.agentsofatlas.com/ Incidently, (and for our purposes here at The Horrors of it All) Gorilla Man's origin was from a story of the same name from Men's Adventures #26, an Atlas series which at that point in 1954 had quickly gone from being a comic about men fighting at war, to gruesome stories of flat-out horror: http://comics.org/details.lasso?id=11170

“I, Robot” isn’t quite so successful in engaging the brain, but it’s far more enjoyable than most of the other big-budget Hollywood blockbusters this year, a high-toned popcorn movie with a good deal of energy, a script that mixes some vaguely cerebral notions with nice touches of humor, characters who don’t descend to the realm of mere caricature, a cast that takes the piece seriously enough to hold our interest, and CGI effects that don’t disappoint. The twists in the final reel strain one’s suspension of belief but don’t go so far as to shatter it, and in the end the picture works as a solid summer entertainment with more than usual intelligence for this genre.
The twists that “I, Robot” takes in the final actwhich won’t be revealed herearen’t exactly rock-solid from a logical standpoint, and though the final revelation does manage to avoid pinning the machinations on the obvious villain, it takes a turn that might not entirely have pleased Asimov, but would surely have amused the Stanley Kubrick who created “2001” and HAL-9000. The final take on “I, Robot” is that a film that might well have been as mindlessly frantic and foolish as Denzel Washington’s 1995 travesty “Virtuosity” is instead a visually impressive effort that mixes the pizzazz of an action-oriented popcorn movie with a more humane sensibility than is usually the case.

As there are no real UFOs and space aliens we have to make do with fake ones. One of the latest, allegedly discovered in the loft of a cottage in Norfolk,. is a "delicate 30 cm (12 inch) figure of a baby alien ... stored in a pungent liquid and has a US serial number painted on its four-toed foot. Possibly sculpted from a clay-like substance and painted grey, the model closely resembles the aliens depicted in a hoax film of an autopsy of the infamous 'Roswell incident'."
Hang on a minute. What is a "US serial number"? Why the "pungent liquid"?
"Curiously, the alien was discovered stored in an old toffee jar wrapped in a copy of the Daily Mirror dating from October 1947", continues the news report. Curiously indeed - it certainly looks like a rather feeble hoax.
However, a Professor Adam Roberts, "an expert in science fiction literature" was called in to examine it and dismissed the denial by a US Air Force spokeswoman that it had anything to do with them by saying: "That is the US Air Force line. They deny these alien encounters. It is quite possible they concoct stories to cover up for more nefarious activities."
At the time of writing it is impossible to say if there will be any further developments, or more mad professors solemnly pronouncing their verdicts on this affair. However, it seems the silly season has started rather early this year.

A more successful and celebrated television pilot in which an emerging female hero was quickly suppressed, of course, is Star Trek 's "The Cage" (1966). Reasonably postulating a future society of sexual equality, creator Gene Roddenberry established a woman as second in command of the Enterprise, and Number One was depicted as extremely intelligent, calm, and perfectly capable of commanding the ship when its then-captain Pike was captured by aliens. When network officials objected, the character was eliminated in the second pilot; but the actress who played the part, Majel Barrett, later returned to the series wearing a blonde wig and playing a nurse. Symbolically, then, a powerful female hero was reduced in status, changed in appearance to conform to American male concepts of female attractiveness, and assigned to a submissive and subordinate occupation. Furthermore, while its attitudes towards women have certainly improved, the

Isaac Asimov Presents The Great SF Stories 1 (1939), DAW books paperback, 1979. Edited by Isaac Asimov and Martin H. Greenberg. I came across this volume, the first in a series, by chance, whilst browsing www.alibris.com. Prior to the late 1950s, Year's Best type anthologies were fairly rare. Everett F. Bleiler and T.E. Dikty produced several, starting in 1949, and whilst Edmund Crispin's Best SF (1955) and subsequent volumes were well-regarded, they weren't annual collections. Judith Merril had a series which started in 1956 and ran through until the mid 1960s, when the likes of Aldiss/Harrison, Wollheim and Carr, and in the 1970s Del Rey and then Dozois kept the Years Best SF flag flying. All but the Bleiler/Ditky books are relatively commonplace in second-hand bookstores, which means that from the mid 1950s to date there is not too much of a problem locating good short SF. Prior to that date it is retrospective collections such as this which have to fill the gap. The book in hand contains some 19 stories, from names which are still well known today (Robert Bloch, Lester Del Ray, L. Sprague De Camp, A.E. Van Vogt, Isaac Asimov etc.) to the less well known nowadays (Eando Binder, Nelson Bond, Joseph E. Kelleam). Isaac Asimov provides an introduction to each story, and the book gives the reader an opportunity to travel back in time some sixty years. So what does this reader get from a collection of stories some twenty years older than he? In the order in which they appear:
