The name is derived from their first initials ("E and O Binder") and should perhaps be regarded as a "parapseudonym". In practice, many of the works of Eando Binder were written by Otto alone. Under the Eando name, the Binders wrote some published science fiction, including stories featuring a heroic robot named Adam Link . The first Adam Link story, published in , is titled " I, Robot Isaac Asimov was said to have been distraught upon learning that his prelude to the Robot Series was also going to be released under this title ; he supposedly preferred Mind and Iron Otto Binder is perhaps best known as a writer for the Captain Marvel line of comic books published by Fawcett Comics

Belated Reviews #25: Eando Binder and "Anton York, Immortal"
By my lights, Eando Binder is another one-book author, though this statement is in accurate in several respects. Eando Binder was E-and-O (Earl and Otto) Binder. (I've heard 'Binder' rhymed with 'flinder', not with 'finder', btw.) They also produced a considerable number of stories and later books. (The distinction blurs, because many of their books are fixup novels created from series of short stories.) The most influential of their works were their Anton York stories and their Adam Link stories, both of which may be found in novel format. (I've seen references to a third major series, their "Via" stories, but have never read them.) After 1940, Otto Binder continued to write alone under the Eando name a change for the worse. Not much worse, come to think of it; most of what they wrote was quite bad. Their more important works are distinguished for their impact, rather than for the quality of the writing. (In addition to the obvious science-fiction venues, Otto Binder also wrote pulp-style stories for comic books. An evening spent with old "Strange Adventures" comics will tell you most of what you need to know about bad pulp sf.) "Anton York, Immortal" (***) consists of stories written between 1937 and1940, and is the answer to "Why are you reviewing Binder's work if it's so bad?" I discovered it in the school library in grade eight (just about the perfect age to read it, and just about the age of the original target audience), and proceeded to reread that copy to tatters. It has the faults of pre-Golden-Age science fiction heavy-handed prose, minimal characterization, a somewhat idolatrous attitude towards science and technology but, like the best of those stories, it has the virtues of its faults a reliance on idea and on wonder.

(Eando Binder)
(26/8/1911 - 14/10/1974, USA)
American comic book writer Otto Binder spent the bulk of his time writing short stories, books, articles, and pulp novels in collaboration with his brother, Earl, under the pen name Eando Binder. He began his comic book career in 1939, as a writer for the Harry 'A' Chesler shop. In 1941, he started writing for his brother Jack's shop, where he came in contact with Fawcett's Marvel Family of comic books.
Otto Binder was a workhorse, and he showed his best as the main scripter for 'Captain Marvel Adventures'. He wrote 451 of the 618 stories, according to Steranko. He also helped create some of the other Marvel features, including 'Mary Marvel', 'Marvel Family', and the 'Jon Jarl' text feature. He also came up with many of the supporting cast: Tawky Tawny, a phenomenally popular talking tiger; Mr. Mind, the evil worm who almost defeated Captain Marvel many times; and the Sivana Family, arch-enemies of the Marvel Family. In addition to all this, Otto O. Binder created scripts for other established Marvel characters like 'Captain Marvel Jr.' and 'Hoppy, The Marvel Bunny'. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
In Star Trek: The Motion Picture (the first of the Star Trek movies), there is a scene where Spock is flying through space with a space suit on, into the heart of “V’ger,” and he does a mind-meld with it. There is a quick flash of images and he passes out. If you slow the flash of images to frame-by-frame, one image shows the plaque that was put on the real Voyager spacecraft, with a naked man and a naked woman, hand held up in greeting, and other symbols representing the Earth in relation to the solar system. Here’s the REAL trivia of this scene: the plaque is actually the one used on the Pioneer spacecraft, NOT the Voyager spacecraft! In the movie they used the WRONG plaque!
This is the plaque image shown during Spock's flashback sequence in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, presumably from the Voyager spacecraft; however, this is the plaque that was placed on the Pioneer spacecraft, not Voyager!
Here is the plaque that was placed on the Voyager craft, which is the image that Spock should have seen:

The Writers of the Pulps

Author of "I, Robot".
(from Amazing Stories , Vol.13, #1, January 1939)
When AMAZING STORIES first appeared in 1926, Eando Binder did not exist as a single individual, but as Otto and Earl Binder. We were avid science fiction fans from the first, and never missed an issue. Until 1932 we were content to read the magazine, and enjoy it. But then we began to get a bug in our ear and the resultant buzzing in our respective heads caused the formation of the writer whose name was to become fairly well known in Amazing Stories and other science fiction magazines. He was Eando Binder, a combination of our first name initials with the word "and" between.
However, this combination no longer exists. Eando Binder is not two men, but a pen-name for one man, and that man is myself. Brother Earl still acts as agent, and manages to sell quite a bot of fiction to our favorite magazines. Science fiction always has, and always will be my favorite field of expression.
I now live in New York, am still unmarried, and devote full time to my writing. I am addicted to bridge, and a long feud has flamed between myself, Mort Weisinger, his brother Edward, and Julius Schwartz, all as crazy about science fiction as myself. Many bridge meetings have resulted in science fiction plots, so it’s a matter of grinding two axes with one stone, or something to that effect. I was once an amateur chemist with a home laboratory, and managed to create several very distinctive and effective odors, or should I say, mal-odors. I hope to live long enough to see some for of atomic power and perhaps a try at space travel, because I believe in both.

WE CAN BE HEROES... A boy on holiday in 1960s Llandudno, Wales. A squeaking spinner-rack groans with American soft-porn mags, but my gaze is fixed on those colourful comicbooks stuffed into the lower racks. Haphazard distribution means never knowing if I'll find the next issue, much less ones from months before. Picking out some Marvel titles, I turn to the last page, hoping that maybe this issue would be complete. But over and over, I found only continued stories and put them back, choosing DC, Charlton, Tower instead. Stan Lee himself recognised this problem when around 1971 he introduced a rule that, stories should be complete in one issue. The idea didn't last very long. But that was how early American comicbooks worked during their formative years in the 1940s. Superheroes largely operated in short, inconsequential stories and within their own isolated worlds, blissfully unaware of any others of their type, unaffected by any previous story's events. The status quo would always be restored by the end of every case, ready for the next. That way, each issue could serve as somebody's first encounter with a character. Every story was an event. As early as November 1941, barely six months after he had broken into comics, Otto Binder (1911-1974) was already a writer with a vision. His life and career are revealed in

The 'T' stands for Tiberius: models and methodologies of classical reception in science fiction
[The following is a paper I delivered at the 2006 Classical Association Conference in Newcastle. I had to edit it down to fit a twenty-minute slot, and what follows is the full-length version, with some changes as a result of points made in the subsequent discussion. I've also only included those of the illustrations I used in the lecture that are significant for points I'm making. I apologize for the fact the there are no links to the notes - this is beyond the frontier of my HTML expertise. Comments and corrections are warmly invited.]
This paper forms the introduction to a planned larger work looking at a number of different aspect of the way in which sf uses the Greek and Roman Classics. I shall start with two parallel, interrelating introductions.
Introduction number one: Studying the way that Classical antiquity is received in modern works of art and literature changes not only the way we look at those works, but also how we look at the source material. For instance, many of my thoughts on what Athenian dramatists were actually trying to say have been formed or amplified through observation of contemporary interpretations. Sometimes the insights are quite unexpected - it wasn't until I read

Later in Fawcett city, orphaned Billy Batson is lured to a surreal subway station and given the ability to transform into the adult-sized Captain Marvel at the speaking of the magic word "Shazam!" Meanwhile, Adam, who works for Thaddeus Sivana, has returned to Fawcett city, and turns out to be more than even he knows... (I'm being cryptic because, though I gather to Captain Marvel fans this is familiar stuff, I didn't know who Adam was, or his significance, so the story had an added freshness for me).

by Greg Bear robota Isaac Asimov began writing his robot stories in the 1940s, and published the first compendium volume, I, Robot Astounding Science Fiction in March of 1942. In a conversation in December of 1940, Campbell presented the rules to Asimov as a fait accompli , saying that he had abstracted them from principles made obvious in the stories themselves. Later, the Three Laws became the key to plot development in the robot stories, and as Asimov merged his robot stories with his Foundation stories and novels, the Three Laws played a significant role there, as well. Today, they are taken for granted – by science fiction writers and robot designers alike. The Three Laws seem almost self-evident as guidelines for any variety of artificial servant – at least, servants capable of moving around or otherwise taking significant action. Thus, while a modern thermostat (a particularly simple kind of robot) has neither the complexity nor the power to save or harm a human, the onboard computer of a spaceship may. Home In the ' Never Would be Too Soon' Department Star Trek: Enterprise could be on the chopping block . IMHO I could happily live the rest of my life without anyone producing another Star Trek TV show, movie, book or Legend of Bilbo Baggins song.
Share: Kevin TV Comments What? I thought you were a fan of ST:Enterprise, annoying theme-song-with-lyrics notwithstanding. Posted by John on Tuesday January 20, 2004 at 10:09 AM Whoops! Never mind. I thought this was posted by ST-FanBoy JP. Posted by John on Tuesday January 20, 2004 at 10:15 AM Enterprise is a great idea. It's got some good actors in it. I love the idea of the smaller ship, exploring for the first time, etc. But why the "time war" plot? Why do they constantly steal ideas from other shows, especially the original series, instead of doing new stuff? Sigh. What a waste. At least the Bandai model should be out before they cancel, if they cancel.
