Ambrose Bierce
A mbrose Bierce was the author of supernatural stories that have secured his place in both the weird tradition and in American letters at large. The stories in his two primary volumes, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (a.k.a., In the Midst of Life , 1892) and Can Such Things Be? (1893) often added a Western setting to Gothic fiction and, more importantly, developed the psychological aspects of horror first recognized by Poe. He is also noted for his tales of the Civil War, which drew on his own experience as a Union cartographer and officer. His first job in journalism was as editor for the San Francisco News-Letter and California Advertiser (1868-72), writing the entries of the "Town Crier" which constituted the first real newspaper column. Perhaps we can say that his true love was satire in any form whether ghost story or fable, newspaper column or lyrical lambaste, fantasy or pseudo-lexicography. In time, Bierce established himself a kind of literary dictator of the West Coast and was so respected and feared as a critic that his judgement could "make or break" an aspiring author's reputation. Well-known by his mere initials, A.G.B., his enemies and detractors called him "Almighty God Bierce." He was also nicknamed "Bitter Bierce" and his nihilistic motto was "Nothing matters." Apart from a few well-anthologized ghost stories (notably, "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge"), Bierce is best remembered for his cynical but humorous Devil's Dictionary (see Publishing News, below).

Think of him as the forgotten brother of Mark Twain. Both had remarkably similar lives, were good friends, and lived in San Francisco around the same time. Bierce, however, followed a different path than Twain. While both had similar humor, and were equals in their genius, Bierce clearly was the better when it came to wit. Public figures quaked in fear of his satirical pen, and newspapers sales soared when he was published. Over the years, many of his jabs at the establishment appeared in local newspapers and were later collected into The Devil's Dictionary, one of the greatest works of satire of the 19th century.

32. Ambrose Bierce To His Niece Lora
Author s last letter before he disappeared into Mexico in 1913.
http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/bierce/ambrose-bierce.html

Amborse Bierce

"Death is not the end," wrote Ambrose Bierce, "there remains litigation over the estate." "Bitter Bierce," as he was often called, was an unapologetic misanthrope who loathed humanity and took pleasure in deflating every inspiring myth or optimistic sentiment with a sharp comment. After serving in the Civil War and seeing up close the depths to which man could sink he became a journalist in San Francisco infamous for cutting one-liners and put-downs. In October 1913, at the age of seventy-one, Bierce decided to quit the United States and observe the Pancho Villa revolution in Mexico. Before leaving, he wrote the following letter to his niece Lora ("Carlt" is her husband, Carlton.)
Ambrose Bierce Bids Farewell
to his Niece Lora
"Civilization be dinged! It is the mountains and the desert for me."
Dear Lora, I go away tomorrow for a long time, so this is only to say good-bye. I think there is nothing else worth saying; therefore you will naturally expect a long letter. What an intolerable world this would be if we said nothing but what is worth saying! And did nothing foolish like going into Mexico and South America.

Ambrose Bierce, 1842-1914?
By Stacey Ann Singletary
Student, University of North Carolina at Pembroke
Born on June 24, 1842, in Meigs County, Ohio, Ambrose Gwinnette Bierce was one of thirteen children of Marcus Aurelius and Laura Bierce. At seventeen, Bierce attended the Kentucky Military Institute and two years later he served in the Union army of the Civil War. It was in the war that Bierce discovered death and destruction. Bierce transformed these Civil War experiences into powerful short stories such as "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "Chickamauga." Bierce enlisted with the Ninth Indiana Infantry and fought in one of the first battles of the Civil War at Philippi, West Virginia. Only three months later did Bierce begin to battle with the effects of war as he carried one of his dying comrades across a battlefield. In 1862, the Civil War heightened, and Bierce was involved in several bloody battles at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and Kenesaw Mountain. As Bierce's participation in the war increased, so did his acts of bravery. Thus, he rose through the ranks to become a sergeant, then a lieutenant, and finally positioned as a topographical engineer. After receiving a severe head wound in June of 1864, his brother, Albert, nurtured Bierce back to health. Despite his second command of a leave of absence, Bierce reenlisted with the Fourth Army Corps. He was finally discharged in the spring of 1865. Bierce's literary career began shortly after his dismissal (DLB 74: 22-23).

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
Ambrose Bierce A man stood upon a railroad bridge in northern Alabama, looking down into the swift water twenty feet below. The man's hands were behind his back, the wrists bound with a cord. A rope closely encircled his neck. It was attached to a stout cross-timber above his head and the slack fell to the level of his knees.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
by Ambrose Bierce
The man who was engaged in being hanged was apparently about thirty-five years of age. He was a civilian, if one might judge from his habit, which was that of a planter. His features were gooda straight nose, firm mouth, broad forehead, from which his long, dark hair was combed straight back, falling behind his ears to the collar of his well-fitting frock coat. He wore a mustache and pointed beard, but no whiskers; his eyes were large and dark gray, and had a kindly expression which one would hardly have expected in one whose neck was in the hemp. Evidently this was no vulgar assassin. The liberal military code makes provision for hanging many kinds of persons, and gentlemen are not excluded.

Ambrose Bierce, "the Old Gringo": Fact, Fiction and Fantasy Glenn Willeford MISDEMEANOR, n. An infraction of the law having less dignity than a felony and constituting no claim to admittance into the best criminal society. Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary War is fertile ground for the creative mind. In 1913 a writer who had experienced the American Civil War came to Chihuahua in order to see more bloodshed, this time in the Mexican Revolution. The two conflicts were similar in nature. Had Ambrose Bierce survived his visit to Mexico he would, no doubt, have written some gripping literature about Mexican warfare. But he did not survive, and his literary legacy does not extend beyond his retirement from journalism in 1913. Who was Bierce, and what brought him from the safety of a comfortable retirement to the battlefields of the Mexican desert? To answer the question, one must understand what events made the man, especially his service as a soldier. Like the Mexican revolution, the American Civil War was a conflict between paisanos It is therefore interesting that Bierce, who was 71 years old at the time, came to Chihuahua in order to observe the Mexican Revolution. In fact, he seems never to have left! And therein lies one of the most intriguing as well as unsolved mysteries, that remains from that difficult period of history.
