John Betjeman Centenary John Betjeman Centenary John Betjeman  The launch of the Inspired! campaign coincides with the centenary of the birth of Sir John Betjeman, former Poet Laureate and famous champion of England’s churches.  He not only loved the buildings but he got involved in them. He campaigned to save many church buildings and he is a wonderful demonstration of what one dedicated enthusiast can achieve in the conservation of historic churches. He was the first person to draw together both the architectural and spiritual in his groundbreaking Collins’ Guide to English Parish Churches and through his work encouraged a greater appreciation of overlooked Victorian church architects such as Comper, Bodley, Butterfield and Street. John Betjeman  Betjeman passed on his insatiable love of “church-crawling” – visiting churches wherever he went – to his children and this year his daughter, the writer Candida Lycett Green, is urging the nation to remember her father by visiting a church. “I can't pass a church I haven’t seen before without wanting to go in. Perhaps it is an addiction. A church provides a calm encompassing I need and crave. I feel comforted by the hearts and souls of generations of parishioners all around me. I don't see how you can get the gist of a village without going into its church, for it brings home so much of the past and the present. The names on the cleaning rota in the porch, the local carvers' art on the gravestones, the Norman moulding round the bottom of the font or the organ installed in grateful memory of those who gave their lives in the last war.”

(See map...ref no. 1) His grave is located near the south side of the church. The church itself is approached via the 10th fairway of the golf course. Betjeman died in Trebetherick on 19 May, 1984. He had a lifelong love of Cornwall and in particular North Cornwall. There are many beautiful evocations of the Cornish landscape to be found in his poetry such as: Cornish Cliffs By the Ninth Green, St Enodoc Tregardock and Old Friends At a time when many others poets were experimenting with free verse - Betjeman stuck firmly to traditional verse forms and rhyme schemes. The same patrician viewpoint informed his writings on architecture. Appointed Poet Laureate in 1972, he was eventually hailed by The Times newspaper: 'By appointment: Teddy Bear to the Nation'. Channel 4's The Real John Betjeman shows that behind the public image was a more complex reality. Combining hitherto unseen archive material with the testimony of friends ranging from journalist Simon Jenkins to Barry (Dame Edna Everage) Humphries, it shows that Betjeman was a high Tory lyricist who was deeply insecure about his social background and his gift for poetry; a believer in the cohesive force of Christianity who could not himself believe; and an apolitical old buffer who spied for Britain. Sir John Betjeman Sir John Betjeman, who became Poet Laureate in 1972, was well known through his appearances on television, and his love of traditional architecture and churches. He was born in London in 1906. From early childhood, he spent holidays at Trebetherick in Cornwall and there made friends with the Headmaster of Dragon School, Oxford. As a consequence of this friendship, he went to board at The Dragon School from 1917 to 1920. Following this, he went to Marlborough College and in 1925 he became a student at Magdalen College, Oxford. Betjeman's interest in churches and architecture was kindled at the Dragon School, but he had been interested in poetry from an early age. At Magdalen, he was part of the 'literary set' and after Oxford he was determined not to join his father's business in 'trade' but to carve out a literary career instead. In October 1930, he started working for the Architectural Review and in 1933 also, briefly, became a film critic on the Evening Standard. Betjeman married Penelope Chetwode and subsequently rented Garrards Farm in Uffington where they moved in February, 1934. The Betjemans soon became immersed in village life. John become People's Warden at The Church and Penelope directed plays and become involved in the Women's Institute. They entertained many famous friends at Uffington. Their son, Paul, was born in Uffington in 1937. Garrards Farm, Uffington, the chalk-built cottage where the Betjemans lived during the 1930s.
