Profiled by Galen Strickland Alfred Bester (1913-1987) - born in New York City and educated at the University of Pennsylvania in both the humanities and in psychology, a scientific discipline he would use to good effect in all his SF. He could perhaps thank Robert A. Heinlein for the publication of his first short story, "The Broken Axiom," winner of the 1939 amateur short-story contest sponsored by the genre magazine Thrilling Wonder Stories . This was the same contest that initiated Heinlein's first story submitted to Astounding Science Fiction . Other notable stories from this period include "Adam and No Eve" (1941) and "Hell is Forever" (1942). "Alfred Bester was, and remains long after his passing, the
preeminent Class Act of imaginative literature. Bester was the
mountain, all the rest of us merely climbers toward that peak."
[Harlan Ellison, from his introduction to The Deceivers Never a prolific SF writer, AB left the genre magazines in 1942 in favor of the comics. He worked on such popular titles as Superman Batman Captain Marvel , and The Green Lantern (he originated the Greet Lantern Oath), before moving on to radio and television scripting. He wrote for the radio serials

It has become interesting to ask the age of Professional Guests of Honor at the World Science Fiction Convention. And how long they were working in the field before the Worldcon honored them.

Rules:
Science fiction, fantasy, and horror count.
From my graphs, I eliminated Pro GoHs not known as authors or editors (e.g. artists, an essayist (Ley), GoHs from TV and motion pictures). In the case of some artists, it was difficult to learn the date of their first work in the field.
I eliminated the Ballantines because I'm not sure of the date of their first SF or fantasy work.
Most GoHs primarily known as editors have also written stories; I used date of first sale to mark their entry into the field. I'm not sure I have accurate figures on the first sales of Wolfgang Jeschke, Josef Nesvadaba, or Sakyo Komatsu. I did the best I could.

Born in New York City , Bester attended the University of Pennsylvania where he was a member of the Philomathean Society . He went on to Columbia Law School , but tired of it and dropped out. In 1936 he married Rolly Goulko. Alfred and Rolly Bester remained married for 48 years until her death on January 12 . The Besters lived on Geigel Hill Road in Ottsville, Pennsylvania. His first short story, "The Broken Axiom", was published in Thrilling Wonder Stories (April 1939) after winning an amateur story competition. Reputedly, this competition was arranged by editors who knew Bester and were favorably inclined toward his early work as a way of giving him a way of breaking into the field. He continued to publish short fiction, most notably in John W. Campbell

The Pi Man
Alfred Bester
published fourteen science fiction stories between 1939 and 1942, mostly in Campbell's magazines. He left the field to work in comics and then in radio drama, returned to sf in 1950 and published only twelve more short stories and two novels before 1960. Those novels The Demolished Man (1953) and The Stars My Destination (1956) and those few stories made him for many the premier science fiction writer of that decade. In fact, in the 1970s, The Stars My Destination was still generally considered the best sf novel ever written. His 1950s work was symbolic of the new styles of sf championed by Galaxy and The Magazine of Fantasy Science Fiction; none of his stories appeared in Astounding.
"The one word most symbolic of science fiction is, of course, 'extrapolation,'" he said in his collection, Starlight (1976), and defined it as "The continuation of a trend, either increasing, decreasing or steady-state, to its culmination in the future. The only constraint is the limit set by the logic of the universe." Note that he does not mention science. This is not exactly what Campbell meant when he used the term extrapolation, and Bester's usage is slippery enough to permit much more of the fantastic (and little or no overt science). Elsewhere, he said, "I'm not much interested in extrapolating science and technology; I merely use extrapolation as a means of putting people into new quandaries which produce colorful pressures and conflicts." His example was enormously influential. Nearly every ambitious young sf writer of the 1960s, certainly all the New Wave writers, from Brian W. Aldiss to Samuel R. Delany, from Michael Moorcock to Roger Zelazny, revered his work. Twenty years ago, it would have been surprising that any of his books be out of print, as they all are today.

Breakthroughs
Tenser, said the Tensor.
Tenser, said the Tensor.
Tension, apprehension and dissension have begun.
I was much impressed by the mind-block jingle used by Ben Reich in The Demolished Man to screen his thoughts from telepathic police. I was instantly convinced that emanations from my own sewer-of-consciousness must be steaming out into enemy airspace. I was about thirteen.... The gangling Langford of those days was morbidly keen on personal privacy in which to do alienated, existential things like reading SF magazines. Privacy was in short supply: even after midnight, parental shock-troops would burst through the door to confiscate one's torch and battered old serialization of The Stars My Destination . (Overall, Alfred Bester had an exceedingly bad effect on me.) And now even thoughts weren't safe. Tension, apprehension and dissension....
