  • Pierre Berton 1920–
(Has also written under pseudonym Lisa Kroniuk.) Canadian journalist, historian, novelist, biographer, satirist, and children's writer. The following entry presents criticism of Berton's work through 1997.
    INTRODUCTION
One of Canada's best-selling authors, Berton has written over forty books on a wide variety of topics, most notably Canadian history. His historical works have drawn praise from reviewers for their engaging narrative style and their ability to make complex events and issues accessible to readers. Many academic critics, however, have faulted Berton for overdramatizing events and introducing historical inaccuracies, arguing that "serious" historians are overlooked while he "popularizes" history.

1967: The Last Good Year . Toronto, Doubleday Canada, 1997. Chapter 6, "Terre des hommes," pages 255-312, is the best single sources dealing with the long-term impact of Expo '67 as well as what happened that year and how it came to be. The title of the chapter was also the title and theme of Expo '67. It came from a work of the same name by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupery, who wrote, "To be a man is to feel that by carrying one stone you can contribute to the building of the world." Many people believed that such an ambitious project was bound to fail, but the miracle of Expo '67 succeeded and Berton sees it as one of the great landmarks in Canadian history, comparing it to the battle of Vimy Ridge in the First World War, or the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Berton also, sadly, sees it as the last time that French and English Canadians worked together in harmony on a great national project with no political friction.
