ISBN 0-932716-23-7 Winner of the Asian American 7th Annual Prize for Literature Mei-mei Berssenbrugge is one of the very few poets writing in the United States today whose voice and writing style are immediately recognizable. In her new collection, NEST , the medium of her poetry continues to be the sentence. To the formalities of syntax and grammar she adds the structures of domestic architecture, isolation, health, desire, play, and family life. Her writing offers a unique poetics of metaphysics and manners. As always the poetry is sensuous and stunning. Read Mei-mei Berssenbrugge's bio.

I Love Artists: New and Selected Poems by Mei-mei Berssenbrugge
University of California Press 2006
Reviewed by John Deming
Finishing Off Nature I’ll sum up B’s Selected for you with 27 hebetudinous words: “Its alterity becomes a nuance of our ineluctable situation of futons, dishes, books, with the potential of a / destabilized surface of time, no outflow through pink walls.” I agree with Mei-mei. I tried to “eluct” the four standing walls of time once, but I was nine-years old and my Air Jordans had just been stolen, so my vertical leap embarrassed me even more than usual. Equally as pitiful is the preceding paragraph’s usage of the five-smacker “hebetudinous,” because in fact I mean the opposite. Mei-mei Berssenbrugge—among the essential “smaller press” overlords in the last three decades of American poetry—flexes a swell vocabulary. But a peripheral, almost easy existential paradox is the most arresting thread in her work: the universe—in all its dense, personal and imagistic beauty—is somehow random, while fixed. The long overdue I Love Artists: New and Selected Poems displays Berssenbrugge’s explorations and reminds us of both the absurd delight and intrinsic necessity of suggesting logical hypotheses for the astonishing and unassailable—with singular perspective as perhaps the only bottom line.

Wall and Wave in the Writing of Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge
Note: During this talk IÕll be showing some slides taken form the catalog of The Wall: Reshaping Contemporary Chinese Art. Time does not permit me to explain my reading of these images to the work of Mei-Mei Bersenbrugge, but itÕs my hope that they will provide a kind of counterpoint to the paper IÕm about to read. Let me begin with my abstract: The luminous spaces of Mei-Mei BerssenbruggeÕs radically innovative poetry have attracted critical discourse of unusual philosophical sophistication and sensitivity. Critics rightly situate her work in relation to Language Poetry, twentieth-century French philosophy, multicultural studies (Chinese, Japanese, Native American) , and the New York City art scene. In this essay, however, I drew my insights from themes suggested by a major exhibition of non-mainstream Chinese art entitled The Wall: Reshaping Contemporary Chinese Art, because the re-conceptualizing of The Wall or walls Ð a re-thinking of lines and boundaries Ð is central to the work of both poets and artists working within, or along side, Chinese tradition. ÒMy origin is a linguistic surface like a decorated wall,Ó she writes, and one is led to wonder, with her, if it is ever possible to recover from the loss of a mother tongue.

berssenbrugge, meimei. Four Year Old Girl. Berkeley Kelsey St. Press, 1998. We can see this in the work mei-mei berssenbrugge does in Four Year Old
http://www.octopusmagazine.com/issue09/kelsey.htm
Celebrating Charlotte Smith, the Fancy, Flights By Karla Kelsey This celebration of the Romantic poet, Charlotte SmithÕs long poem ÒBeachy HeadÓ is also an investigation of, into, and through the particular faculty of the mind known as Òthe fancy.Ó Discussion of this faculty flourished during the Romantic period of poetic and philosophic writing and is often contrasted with the more popular and, in terms of the literary tradition, aesthetically preferred mode of the mind, the imagination. Although the fancy, as a critical term, has fallen from aesthetic discourse, vibrant traces of it remain in critical works such as Lyn HejinianÕs ÒHappilyÓ and Charles BernsteinÕs ÒArtifice of Absorption.Ó Both of these works celebrate the lineage of the fancy in the non-mimetic, flickering mode of mind and language evident in contemporary avant-garde writing. Writing on a topic such as Òthe fancyÓ provides an enticing challenge, for to approach a work of the fancy with a thesis about how it does or does not operate is rather like pinning down a bird and taking a scalpel to its wings in order to discover how it feels in flight. I, and my readers, might learn something about the physiology of the bird that encourages it to fly, but this is the wrong method to use to gain knowledge and experience of its flight. In questioning the method with which to pursue the fancy, I began to believe that I would have to become a nightingale to investigate a nightingaleÕs relation to its song.
