Her work is known for its exploration of the complexities of cultural and political identity, an interest informed by her own experience of cultural and linguistic displacement. She was educated at Barnard Reed , and Columbia University . After receiving her M.F.A. from Columbia in 1974, she settled in rural northern New Mexico which has remained her primary residence since then. Mei-mei Berssenbrugge was born in 1947 in her mother's native city of Beijing, in China. Her father, the son of Dutch immigrants to the U.S., met her mother while working at the American Embassy in Chungking. While Berssenbrugge was still a baby, the family moved to the U.S. where she grew up in Massachusetts. She attended Barnard College for a year before transferring to Reed College, where she earned her B.A. in 1969, followed by an M.F.A from Columbia University in 1973. After graduate school, Berssenbrugge moved to New Mexico where she taught at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, and became actively involved in the local artistic community. Through frequent trips to New York City, Berssenbrugge also became deeply engaged and influenced by the city's movements of abstract artists, and New York School and Language poets , a milieu that included John Ashbery Barbara Guest Charles Bernstein , and Anne Waldman . Her engagement led to many rich collaborations with other artists, including the creation of artist books with Richard Tuttle and Kiki Smith, and theatre works with Shi Zhen Chen, Frank Chin, Blondell Cummings, Tan Dun, and Alvin Lucier.

    Introduction
Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge, photo by Ann Hutchins Tyuonyi. Traveling frequently to New York City, Berssenbrugge became engaged in the rich cultural flourishing of the abstract art movement, and was influenced by New York School poets John Ashbery and James Sherry, and then the Language poets, including Barbara Guest, Anne Waldman, Charles Bernstein, as well as artist Susan Bee.
The Heat Bird (Burning Deck 1983), Empathy (Station Hill, 1989), Sphericity (Kelsey Street, 1993), Endocrinology Four Year Old Girl (Kelsey Street 1998), and, most recently, Nest (Kelsey Street, 2003). An edition of selected poems is forthcoming from the University of California Press.
    June 2003
in medias res . Before writing Four Year Old Girl , I was reading some of the cultural identity texts about nomads and the subaltern. I think Theresa Cha wrote this work before such studies became fashionable. When I read , her passion attracted me, but also the sense that she was carving meaning with each word in the moment, in a way that was almost sculptural, a physical art. I was interested in how she seemed to do that. It may have helped that she was multi-lingual. English was not her primary language. So she had a kind of triangulation on it, making the passion into something concrete. Her persona of someone who experienced a loss of place and a loss of culture I thought was beautifully expressed and something I thought I could identify with.

    Empathy
    Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge
Rosmarie Waldrop A dialogue of an extremely fine-tuned intelligence with the "world." We start out dazzled by the sheer beauty of the perceptions, the subtle music, the surprising shifts into complex inference and meditation. We end up "flattened against our seats" gasping for breath as the poem takes off into unsuspected altitudes-or depths. Empathy is not just a fine book. It is an event. An important event. Barbara Guest Empathy with its perilous line leads into unruled space of porcelain and the mystery tusk. The narrative structure suspended, a stilt upon the poem, wears the sheen of thoughtful surfaces and the rouge of elemental surprise. Charles Bernstein In Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge's Empathy , "the human hovers like a mood" that refuses definition. In the flickering mirrors of distant landscapes, perception melts, like ice detailed equivocations, and the scenes and lights they evoke, have become" spiritual exercises in physical form." "Even the slightest movement" shimmers. Jackson Mac Low Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge's poetry moves from "inner" phenomena to ones coming from the "external" world and back again with breathtaking evenness. Calmly and convincingly she leads our attention from confidence of passion or attention itself to ice crystals, gulls, fireworks, or apple trees and to very specific qualities of perception, especially vision-most notably, those associated with the properties of light-fogginess, brightness, colors (what a poet of light she is!) in poetry that always speaks equally about "the world" and "herself." She is neither" objectivist" nor subjectivist" but a poet of the whole consciousness. A virtuoso of the long line, hers unlike those of most other poets are startlingly non-rhapsodic, although they are more truly emotional than those of most rhapsodists. I've known and loved Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge's poetry for years. It gets better all the time.

Mei-mei Berssenbrugge. Photo: Kiki Smith. Courtesy of Kiki Smith and U.L.A.E. My first experience of Mei-mei Berssenbrugge’s writing was hearing her read at an event I hosted for the New York City Opera called “The Color of Sound: A Conversation on Music and the Visual Arts.” She was magic. I was instantly reminded of all those old poets endlessly calling on their muses, because suddenly I knew precisely what they were talking about. And I understood: theirs was, after all, no dusty literary convention. As Berssenbrugge spoke her poetry, she was transformed—as though the words came through her from another place. The audience, hypnotized, bent forward to catch the meanings in her soft voice. She read two poems that were completely different from each other, and although I cannot remember the words of either, I can still easily invoke the vivid and distinct experience of each: in the first, perhaps because of her facial expression, I imagined that she had
