Jan Berenstain was born Janice Grant on July 26 , in Philadelphia, and was raised in west Philadelphia and the suburb of Radnor. They met on their first day of class at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art in and married five years later, on April 13 In an interview about the books, the Berenstains said that a big reason behind their inspiration was some of the difficulties parents faced, as well as some childhood tribulations when they were kids themselves. Their books evolved to include items such as cell phones and video game systems in the fictional Bear Country, which were nonexistent (or very limited), when the books were first commissioned. The Berenstains also noted there were some issues which seemed to appear in every generation, such as kids throwing tantrums in public places, which made important subject matters for their stories. However, they deliberately wanted to steer clear of overly heavy issues such as violence. They produced together the comic strip Sister from through . They published their first book featuring the Berenstain Bears in

SEARCH: Meet the Author/Illustrator Archives Stan and Jan Berenstain Books and Reading Versus Everything Else But just what is it that's so great about books and reading as compared to everything else? Why are books and reading better for children than television, movies, and video games? Not that we have anything against movies, per se . Some of our best friends are movies. We enjoy Taxi reruns as much as the next fellow. And we freely admit that we lack the hand/eye coordination to enjoy the frenzy of most video games. But what can books and reading do for a youngster that those admittedly powerful audio/visual media cannot? One of the most important inner strengths we can develop is the faculty of imagination. Books enhance, encourage, and nourish imagination. Consider, for example, Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and the situation its hero, Jim Hawkins, finds himself in: separated from his friends on the Hispaniola, he is thrown together with that most piratical of pirates, Long John Silver. The young reader can't help but imagine him or herself in Jim's situation, can't help but empathize (without imagination there can be no empathy) with Jim's quandary as he confronts the contradictions of Long John Silver's personality; the old cutthroat appears to be evil personified, but he is protective and kindly toward Jim. What does one do in such a situation? And what to do if you're Jack and have to decide whether to trade your fatherless family's last cow for a handful of unprepossessing beans – or you're Hansel or Gretel with a sweet tooth as big as the Ritz and you come to a candy cottage presided over by a witch who makes the Wicked Witch of the West look like Betty Crocker?

Biography:
Janice Grant and Stantley Berenstain were both born in Philadelphia in 1923. They met in 1941, on their first day of classes at the Philadelphia College of Art. Stan's first works as writer and illustrator were at the Army, for he collaborated with an Army newspaper. In 1946 they got married and have two sons. From 1956 through 1990, they did together their first cartoon feature for McCall's/Good Housekeeping called It's All in the Family (a people family). And soon they got interested for young children's books, to help their sons learn to read. So they created a bear family called Berenstain Bears and in 1962, thanks to Dr. Seuss The Big Honey Hunt was published. This first book just presented a family of three (Papa, Mama and Brother), but in 1974 they added Sister in The Berenstains Bears' New Baby . This book opened the series of First Time Books , the most popular among parents, children and critics. In the year 2000, the bear family has grown again, for The Berenstain Bears: Baby makes Five has been just published.

STAN BERENSTAIN FOUNDATION
Stan Berenstain loved to draw as a child and spontaneously covered the walls of a room in his grandmother’s apartment. “No Sistine Chapel, no post office, no Altamira Cave ever cried out more loudly for decoration,” said Stan, although his grandmother felt otherwise. After attending the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art on a four-year merit scholarship (and where he met Jan on his first day of classes), Stan was drafted during World War II. He served as a medical illustrator where he observed and diagrammed procedures for the benefit of other doctors in the days before video or film was widely available. His first published works were cartoons featuring a hapless recruit for the Army newspaper. Before he was discharged he sold his first cartoons to the Saturday Review of Literature and his career was born.
After World War II magazines and newspapers prospered and ushered in the last period of the Golden Age of Illustration in America. In the era before television, periodicals provided national leisure time activity. Stan and Jan worked together as gag cartoonists, building on the success that Stan had achieved at the end of the war. Although their early days were the hardest, their unique status as a husband and wife team helped them become two of the most successful cartoonists of the period.
In 1962, Stan and Jan Berenstain published their first book about a family of bears who live down a sunny dirt road in Bear Country. Since then, the Berenstain Bears have become an American institution, making Stan and Jan the most popular author/illustrators in publishing with over 250 million books old. The Berenstain Bears was the first series of children’s books in publishing history to follow the antics of a particular family. Bear stories have been inspired by their own childhood memories and their experiences as the parents of two sons, which they considered the best possible source material.

About Stan and Jan Berenstain
Stanley and Janice (Grant) Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia. At the age of 18, the two met on their first day at the Philadephia College of Art and married on April 13, 1946. Stan spent a few years in the Army, and his first job writing and illustrating came when he began drawing cartoons for an Army newspaper. Together, the Berenstains began their career writing cartoons in their series called "It's All in the Family." This comic, rather adult in nature, was featured in McCalls and Good Housekeeping magazines from 1956-1990. Their art was also featured on the cover of Collier's magazine twenty times. With the success of their "All in the Family" cartoon and a number of adult humor books based on this series, the Berenstains felt they might like writing children's books, as well. Stan and Jan's two sons, Michael and Leo, enjoyed Dr. Suess books, and the Dr. himself, Theordor Geisel, asked Stan and Jan to write a book in his series of Cat in the Hat/Beginniner Books. The result: in 1962, the Berenstains released their first book about a family of bears, The Big Honey Hunt This story was an instant success, and since 1962, over 250 Berenstain Bears stories have been written and illustrated by Stan and Jan. According to the authors, bears were chosen as the central characters "because they can stand up, they look good in clothes, and are fun to draw."
