Life
He was born in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, one of six towns in the area known as the Potteries. Enoch Bennett, his father, had qualified as a solicitor in 1876 and had an office in Piccadilly Street, Hanley. The younger Bennett was brought up in modest surroundings and educated locally and at the University of London.
At age 21 Arnold, who worked as a rent collector, left his father's practice and went to London as a solicitor's clerk. He won a literary competition in "Tit Bits" magazine in 1889 and was encouraged to take up journalism full time. In 1894 he became assistant editor of the periodical "Woman". He noticed that the material offered by a syndicate to the magazine was not very good, so he wrote a serial which was bought by the syndicate for 75 pounds. He then wrote another. This became The Grand Babylon Hotel. Just over four years later his first novel A Man from the North was published to critical acclaim and he became editor to the magazine.
From 1900 he devoted himself full time to writing, giving up the editorship and writing much serious criticism, and also theatre journalism, one of his special interests. In 1902 Anna of the Five Towns, the first of a succession of stories which detailed life in the Potteries, appeared.

Arnold Bennett Papers
Arnold Bennett was born on 27th May 1867 in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent and moved to London in 1889. From 1903 to 1911 he lived mostly in Paris, producing many novels and plays as well as working as a freelance journalist. He died of typhoid fever in London on 27th March 1931. In his writing Bennett based many of the characters, events and places on those that actually existed or happened in the Potteries during the nineteenth century. The University Library has taken a special interest in collecting material relating to Bennett. We hold several hundred letters and postcards, literary manuscripts, as well as pictorial material. The manuscript of the novel 'Lilian' and Bennett's Journal covering the period 21 September 1906 to 18 July 1907 are of particular interest, the latter having been published by Penguin. An important addition has been the bequest of Mary Kennerley, the daughter of Bennett's sister Tertia. This includes some 30 first editions of Bennett's works, most of which carry his manuscript dedication, a typewritten manuscript of 'The Peggy Stories' written for children by Tertia Bennett, family photographs and a series of letters from Arnold to Tertia and her husband written over a period of 30 years.

Omelet with Cream and Smoked Fish Filling
n the vein (sic) of artery cloggers, this recipe must be one of the highest-cholesterol dishes I've come across in years. It may sound unconventional, but delicious it most certainly is. I came upon it in the Bistro under the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, circa 1978. The following is my reconstruction of the dish I had there.
Serves 2
large eggs (the fresher the better) 6 oz
(180 g) smoked haddock (or other smoked large-flaked white fish) 2 oz
(60 g) finely grated sharp cheddar (the light yellow New York/Vermont style is best) 2/3 cup
(175 ml) heavy cream a little butter pinch dill pinch salt and pepper
Prepare the fish by poaching it lightly (5 minutess) and then breaking it up into nice large flakes.
Whip the cream and fold in the grated cheese. Add the fish and set aside.
The remaining steps are a basic omelet recipe and can be used with any filling. Crack the eggs, beat them up with the dill, salt and pepper.
Meanwhile heat a frying pan. Add a knob of butter and let it melt. When it has stopped frothing and is just beginning to go brown...

Omelette Arnold Bennett This is actually a famous classic, created – so the story goes – for the novelist Arnold Bennett, who wrote an entire novel, Imperial Palace , while staying at the Savoy hotel. While his work was in progress, the chefs perfected the omelette to such a degree that our friend demanded that it be made for him wherever he travelled anywhere in the world and hence its name. Meanwhile, the Savoy Grill, proud of their achievement, still serve it every single day, year in, year out. It is a truly wonderful creation, a flat but fluffy open-faced omelette made with smoked finnan haddock. What I have discovered is that, while chefs can instantly call upon a ladle of b©chamel or hollandaise (both included in the Savoy recipe), it's quite a fiddle to make all this at home. So I have adapted it so that it becomes much simpler and speedier, but I promise just as brilliant as the original. Serves 2 as a supper dish or 3 as a light lunch with salad
    Ingredients
    2 rounded tablespoons cr¨me fra®che
8 oz (225 g) smoked haddock, skin and bones removed, cut into ½ in (1 cm) chunks
