More Information about the Cathars and Catharism: Hilaire Belloc's The Albigensian Attack
The following work is called The Albigensian Attack , Chapter Five of Hilaire Belloc's The Great Heresies This work does not present either reliable history or Cathar theology. It is written more as polemic, even invective. Perhaps propaganda is not too strong a word in view of the fact that Belloc omits and distorts facts that do not support his case. The text is most interesting as a representation of what Roman Catholics were, and sometimes still are, taught about Catharism in the Languedoc. Among the errors to be found in it are the idea that the bon homines He uses medieval language which was still current in his lifetime. Alternative ideas are branded as sicknesses to be wiped out. Catharism is a "disease", an "epidemic", a "devastating plague". He says that Cathar "influence hung like a miasma or poisonous mist". He observes that "The first Inquisition arose from the necessity of extirpating the remnants of the disease". The language is carefully crafted to give no more than a hint that his Church burned alive people for the crime of disagreeing with Catholic theology, and not even so much as a hint that it killed others for the crime of tolerating (ie not persecuting) people who disagreed with Catholic theology.

Hilaire Belloc
Profile
Born in La Celle St. Cloud, near Paris, France on the 27th July 1870, to Louis Belloc, a French Barrister, and Elizabeth Parkes Belloc (1829-1925), ( Bessie Rayner Parkes In December 1871 the family moved to Westminster in London, where young Belloc attended Mrs Case's Preparatory School in Hampstead. Six years later the family relocated again to Arundel in the South Downs. In September 1880 Belloc began studying at the Oratory School in Edgbaston, Birmingham , where he was awarded the English Prize. It was whilst here that he wrote his first work entitled Buzenval , not published until 1888. After an unsuccessful spell in the French army, in 1893 Belloc was awarded a scholarship at Balliol College, Oxford. He became a naturalised British subject in 1902, and a Liberal MP in 1906, but, disillusioned with politics, did not seek re-election in 1910. He was a close friend of G K Chesterton, who illustrated many of his books. Although he is well known for his nonsensical verse for children, becoming famous with The bad child's book of beasts (1895), he also wrote many novels, essays, travel books, several historical studies, including

    Selected verses from
The Bad Child's Book of Beasts
    by Hillaire Belloc
    Introduction
I call you bad, my little child,
      Upon the title page,
Because a manner rude and wild
      Is common at your age.
The Moral of this priceless work
      (If rightly understood)
Will make you from a little Turk
      Unnaturally good.
Do not as evil children do,
      Who on the slightest grounds
      Will imitate the Kangaroo,
      With wild unmeaning bounds:
Do not as children badly bred,
      Who eat like little Hogs,
And when they have to go to bed
      Will whine like Puppy Dogs:
Who take their manners from the Ape,
      Their habits from the Bear,
      Indulge the loud unseemly jape,
      And never brush their hair.
But so control your actions that
      Your friends may all repeat.
"This child is dainty as the Cat,
      And as the Owl discreet."
      The Yak
As a friend to the children
      Commend me the Yak.
You will find it exactly the thing:
It will carry and fetch, you can ride on its back,
Or lead it about with a string.
The Tartar who dwells on the plains of Thibet
      (A desolate region of snow)
Has for centuries made it a nursery pet

  • Hilaire Belloc 1870–1953
(Full name Joseph Hilaire Pierre S©bastien R©n© Swanton Belloc) English poet, essayist, travel writer, biographer, critic, historian, and novelist.
    INTRODUCTION
At the turn of the century Belloc was considered one of England's most provocative essayists and a talented poet. In fact, Belloc and his long-time friend and collaborator G. K. Chesterton have been lauded by W. H. Auden as the best light-verse writers of their era, with Belloc's Cautionary Tales considered by some his most successful work in the genre.
    Biographical Information
The son of a French father and English mother, Belloc was born in St. Cloud, France, but raised in England, studying at the best private schools. From his studies and his travels between England and France, he acquired cosmopolitan interests in history, polemics, and literature. After brief service in the French military and a brilliant stint at Oxford's Balliol College, Belloc began writing for various London newspapers and magazines. His first book, Verses and Sonnets , appeared in 1896, followed by The Bad Child's Book of Beasts , which satirized moralistic light verse. Illustrated with superb complementary effect by his friend Basil T. Blackwood
