http://www.nytimes.com/books/00/12/24/bookend/bookend.html
December 24, 2000 BOOKEND / By SCOTT McLEMEE Back to the Future very familiar complaint about the limits of utopian fiction applies in full to Edward Bellamy's ''Looking Backward: 2000-1887'' a novel first published in 1888 and continuously in print ever since. As fiction, it is a dud. There are countless didactic passages, and only few moments of action or feeling. (Imagine a blueprint with characters.) Bellamy does include a love story people in the year 2000 do experience the old passions, it seems yet the romance is clearly an afterthought, meant to sweeten the social theory. Ideas trump narrative; pure reason squeezes emotion to the margins of the text. That has always been the complaint about fictional utopias. And as the abundance of old books on display at the current New York Public Library exhibit ''Utopia: The Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World'' may suggest, it has always been an essentially ''literary'' form of the imagination (though artists and filmmakers have added their visions as well). As a genre, utopian fiction is a mutant species a hybrid of the fable and the essay. Most mutants don't survive very long; yet ''Looking Backward'' is a remarkable exception. For all its inherited disabilities, Bellamy's vision has always had an uncommonly firm grip on readers' attention and still does, in the very year that his utopia is set in. The plot of ''Looking Backward'' (such as it is) is pure Victorian-era sci-fi. Julian West, the narrator, is a young Boston Brahmin of the 19th century he is tormented by the social chaos of the Gilded Age and also by insomnia. His home contains a special underground chamber, where he can sometimes catch a few winks thanks to soundproof insulation and the services of a professional hypnotist. Through a remarkable sequence of events, West awakens in the year 2000 to find that the poverty, conflict and ugliness of his own era have been forgotten by all but historians.

Perez, who had been in the room, followed him out of doors.
"Do you think my brother will get well?" he asked.
"I think so, if he does not have to go back to jail."
"He will not go back unless I go with him," said Perez.
"Well, I think it most likely you will," replied the doctor dryly. "On
the whole, I should say his prospect of long life was better than yours,
if I am speaking to Perez Hamlin, the mob captain."
"You mean I shall be hung?" "And drawn and quartered," amended the doctor, grimly. "That is the penalty for treason, I believe." "Perhaps," said Perez. "We shall see. There will be fighting before hanging. At any rate, if I'm hung, it will be as long as it's short, for Reub would have died if I hadn't got him out of jail." The doctor gathered up the reins. "I want to thank you for coming," said Perez. "You know, I s'pose, that we are very poor, and can't promise much pay." "If you'll see that your mob doesn't give me such a serenade as it did Squire Woodbridge last night, I'll call it square," said the doctor

The following entry provides critical commentary on Bellamy's novel Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (1888). For information on Bellamy's entire career, see NCLC, Vols. 4 and 86.
    INTRODUCTION
A response to the industrialization and social inequality that characterized late nineteenth-century American culture, Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (1888) established him as the prophet of a new order advocating an American brand of socialism. His views, which promoted state capitalism as a way to achieve state socialism, were based on those of the National party and were eventually absorbed into the Populist movement. Bellamy is remembered as an early proponent for equality and social justice and as a pioneer in the development of the American utopian novel.
    Biographical Information
Bellamy was the third son of a New England Baptist minister, Rufus King Bellamy, and a Calvinist mother, Maria Putnam Bellamy. Although in his later life he did not claim any religious faith, his early training impressed upon him a strong sense of Christian morality and humanism that is manifest throughout his work. His father's easy generosity and concern for his parish countered by his mother's staunch belief in the Protestant work ethic influenced Bellamy's conception of utopia as both materialistically oriented toward human happiness and strictly regulated by ethical and practical norms.
