    • Forgiving sins, I should have known, is not blotting them out. The blood of Christ only turns them red instead of black. It leaves them in the record. It leaves them in the memory.
      • Ch. 1 A sense of utter loneliness—loneliness inevitable, crushing, eternal, the loneliness of existence, encompassed by the infinite void of unconsciousness—enfolded him as a pall. Life lay like an incubus on his bosom. He shuddered at the thought that death might overlook him, and deny him its refuge.
        • Ch. 2 No girl, however coolly her blood may flow, can be pressed to a man's breast, wildly throbbing with love for her, and not experience some agitation in consequence. Whatever may be the state of her sentiments, there is a magnetism in such a contact which she cannot at once throw off. That kiss had brought her relations with Henry to a crisis. It had precipitated the necessity of some decision. She could no longer hold him off, and play with him. By that bold dash he had gained a vantage-ground, a certain masterful attitude which he had never held before. Yet, after all, I am not sure that she was not just a little afraid of him, and, moreover, that she did not like him all the better for it.

When the government granted their wish, the government’s schools imposed segregation by law and taught racism as official policy. The official racism and segregation was a bad example three decades before the National Socialist German Workers Party, and decades afterward.

Bellamy’s interests turned toward social reform, and he devoted two years to the writing of his most famous work, Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (1888). In it, he created a utopian socialist society with a planned economy, peace and security. While Bellamy supported a "Nationalist" dogma, he decried Marxian socialism and class warfare. The book sold about a million copies, and people across the country created Nationalist clubs to discuss the book and the implications of its philosophy. In 1891, in order to further promote his Nationalist ideals, Bellamy founded the New Nation, a weekly newspaper, in Boston. Because of declining health, however, he had to give up the paper in 1894, and he spent his remaining years writing a sequel to Looking Backward Equality (1897). Bellamy died in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, on May 22, 1898.

Edward Bellamy by Wayne Sneath Edward Bellamy was born March 26, 1850 in Chicoppee Falls, Massachusetts. Son and grandson of Baptist ministers, Bellamy studied law and worked briefly in the newspaper industry in New York and in Springfield, Massachusetts. Although he published four novels and several essays in his lifetime, he is remembered most for his 1888 work Looking Backward, 2000-1887 and it was this novel which influenced the formation of the Nationalist political movement and several accompanying utopian living experiments during the 1890's. The novel became so popular that by 1900 only Uncle Tom's Cabin had sold more copies. Looking Backward , certainly considered by many as within the genre of utopian fiction, anticipates a future America (the year 2000) of nationalized industry, equal distribution of wealth and the destruction of class divisionsthis vision counters the problems Bellamy saw with his contemporary society. In this utopian world, loyalty to the solidarity of the state holds the society together. Bellamy called this philosophy Nationalism. Although his fictional story in Looking Backward is unique, Bellamy owes much of the philosophy behind his vision to an earlier social reformer and author, Laurence Gronlund, who published his treatise

It was one of the annual holidays of the nation in the latter third of the nineteenth century.... Chapter 3: "He is going to open his eyes. He had better see but one of us at first." Chapter 5: When, in the course of the evening the ladies retired, leaving Dr. Leete and myself alone, he sounded me as to my disposition for sleep.... Chapter 6: Dr. Leete ceased speaking, and I remained silent, endeavoring to form some general conception of the changes in the arrangements of society implied in the tremendous revolution which he had described. Chapter 7: "It is after you have mustered your industrial army into service," I said, "that I should expect the chief difficulty to arise...." Chapter 8: When I awoke I felt greatly refreshed, and lay a considerable time in a dozing state, enjoying the sensation of bodily comfort. Chapter 9: Dr. and Mrs. Leete were evidently not a little startled to learn, when they presently appeared, that I had been all over the city alone that morning....
