What Kate's Reading
Honesty is the best policy: I will be posting short reviews or at least a few comments about every book I read. I'd like to promote this blog as an online book club; I'd love to have it become a place for discussions on books, where people to learn about new books, comment about them or similar authors or books that they think I and other readers might enjoy.

The Dark Secret of Weatherend: John Bellairs
I could blame it on the rain (no Milli Vanilli jokes here, please), or fault the cold-and-wet-or-cold-and-not-wet weather. I can't get enough of gothic mysteries right now, from Bram Stoker's also-ran novels to the Elizabeth Kostova debut from a couple of years ago.
John Bellairs fits into this right now. After posting the review of The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt , I was overjoyed to find a website and group devoted to all things John Bellairs , which then inspired me to want to read some of the non-Johnny Dixon books. I found an Anthony Monday mystery in my library, The Dark Secret of Weatherend , and blazed through it in about two days.

Z John Bellairs Biography American author John Bellairs (1938–1991) is perhaps best known for his gothic mystery novels for young adults. Prior to his first YA novel, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Bellairs published three adult books of significant merit: St. Fidgeta and Other Parodies, The Pedant and the Shuffly, and The Face in the Frost. Of all of Bellairs's work, St. Fidgeta remains the only title currently out of print.
John Anthony Bellairs was born in Marshall, Michigan on 17 Jan. 1938. After earning degrees at Notre Dame and the University of Chicago, Bellairs taught English at various midwest and New England colleges for several years before turning full-time to writing in 1971. He maintained a lifelong interest in archaeology, architecture, "kitsch-y" antiques, bad poetry, traveling to England, history, and Latin. His favorite authors included Charles Dickens, Henry James, C. V. Wedgwood, and Garrett Mattingly, as well as M.R. James, from whose ghost stories he occasionally borrowed elements to work into his own fiction.
The Face in the Frost Bellairs undertook after reading J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings; in the upshot, it is not much like that book, save for the fact that it shares the idea of a wizard who is palpably human and not a literary stereotype. Bellairs said of his third book: "The Face in the Frost was an attempt to write in the Tolkien manner. I was much taken by The Lord of the Rings and wanted to do a modest work on those lines. In reading the latter book I was struck by the fact that Gandalf was not much of a personjust a good guy. So I gave Prospero, my wizard, most of my phobias and crotchets. It was simply meant as entertainment and any profundity will have to be read in."

Greetings, all I grew up in the 80's enthralled by John Bellairs' books. For one reason or another, my incomplete collection of Bellairs paperbacks is one of the few things from my childhood my mother saved. Having a strong urge to read them again, I asked her if she still had them and she brough t the box along on a visit. I have been devouring them on the subway, still amazed at how absorbing and entertaining they are. Anyhow, I've become interested in collecting Bellairs hardcover books with the ORGINAL Gorey artwork. I've done some trolling online, but I know very little about collecting books. I don't intend for it to be a major investment - I am not particularly into necessarily having a 1st printing and I don't care if they were previously in a library. I just want the Gorey slipcovers, and to collect as much of the pre-Strickland material as possible. Does anyone have, or know where I can obtain a list of publication info for Bellairs so I can make more informed decisions in my shopping? I live in New York and have had poor luck finding any used bookstores with much of an invested interest in children's literature.

The Figure In The Shadows by John Bellairs
The second book in John Bellairs trilogy, The Figure in the Shadows , delighted me as much as the first. This book follows our same characters as the first book: Lewis, his Uncle Jonathan, and Mrs. Zimmerman, and adds Lewis' new best friend Rose Rita.
Lewis is still quite the unpopular kid at school as he was in the first book. He's still chunky, still no good at sports, and is still quite clumsy. He's getting picked on quite a bit at school. To try to cheer him up, his Uncle Jonathan goes through an old chest with Lewis and they root through all kinds of old treasures. Among them is an old "lucky coin." Mrs. Zimmerman declares that the coin has no magical value, but Lewis is not convinced and decides to wear the coin aware his neck. Things start to look better for Lewis, but with things looking better, a not so friendly side of Lewis appears (can we say "my precious"). A figure in the shadows also appears as do some haunting messages.
The illustrations by Mercer Mayer are great. I love Mayer's work and always have. His Little Critters books were some of my favorites when I was a little kid, so it was nice to see some of his work that was new to me.

    The Plot
Prospero and his friend Roger Bacon, both wizards, embark on a journey to save humankind from the evil spell of their former colleague, Melichus. Melichus has found an old book, written in curious ciphers, which provides glimpses of some basic formulas of power when he tries to translate the strange writing. The more Melichus pursues the translation, the more entranced he becomes; what begins as intellectual curiosity quickly becomes an obsession with the power the spells might bring him. The formulas contain the secret to another reality, and whoever masters these... [The entire page is 912 words long]
