Summer 2003 Issue John Bellairs: The Spooky Writer Who Cast a Magic Spell By Carol Schaal '91M.A. When the kids finish the latest Harry Potter, some fans of ghosts and spells and things that go creeeeak in the night have a suggestion: Check out the books by John Bellairs. Bellairs, who graduated from Notre Dame in 1959, became the talk of juvenile fiction in the 1970s with the publication of The House with a Clock in Its Walls. The creepy doings in that book earned it a place as one of The New York Times Best Books in 1973. He published three separate series of juvenile horror/mystery books until his death of cardiovascular disease in 1991 at age 53. His estate hired Brad Strickland to complete four books begun by Bellairs; Strickland has since continued the series under his own name. "Bellairs' books are still being read," says Carole Walton, a lecturer at Saint Mary's College who specializes in children's literature. "I always put him on my booklist for the students here."

A Few Words About John Bellairs
Those who have discovered John Bellairs' one true novel for adult readers, The Face in the Frost , die a little inside when they contemplate what else we might have had from this incredible writer had he not focussed on earning his bread and cheese with so-called "juvenile" tales. (Though even those are pleasurable reading for adults, and I will describe them separately below.)
Besides that novel, Bellairs early in his career produced two now sadly little-known gems of adult reading: St. Fidgeta and other Parodies and The Pedant and the Shuffly . That last is a short but warm-hearted spoof of the fantasy tale, richly amusing. The first is, as the title says, parodies, in this case parodies of Roman Catholic reading matter of various kinds, from hagiography to sermons, and though each has a little sting here and there, they are also at bottom warm-hearted; one need not be a Roman Catholic to appreciate the humor, which is uproarious, for the parodies make fairly clear what the original forms must look like. But neither of those works is a full novel, the form at which Bellairs eventually excelled.
Bellairs' novels follow a clear pattern. They begin in whimsical witin the case of the book we are now considering, in an explosion of warm, humorous, whimsical witand they sustain that whimsey throughout; each is a tale that would be worthwhile reading just

John Bellairs is perhaps best known as the author of some 15 gothic mystery novels for young adults. Along with these, he also produced three 'adult' books: St Fidgeta and Other Parodies The Pedant and the Shuffly , and the Tolkien-inspired fantasy The Face in the Frost . Of these adult titles, only The Face in the Frost is still in print. Biographical Information Born on January 17, 1938, John Bellairs grew up in the small town of Marshall, Michigan, USA. These were wonderful years for Bellairs, and he looked back upon them with great fondness. In his novels he often included things that happened to him as a child as well as things he wished could have happened. John Bellairs began his career as an English professor teaching at the College of St Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, and then at Shimer College in Mount Carrol, Illinois. After the success of his first book St Fidgeta and Other Parodies , Bellairs attempted to turn to writing full time. After a six month stay in England he realised that writing alone would not sustain him and so returned to the US and picked up his teaching career once more. Following the success of some of his later books, Bellairs was able to return to writing full time for good. He spent much of his adult life in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and died there of cardiovascular disease, on March 8, 1991.

Most of the dangers faced by Bellairs's young investigators come about due to their misuse of magical properties or objects. The protagonists then learn how to face their dilemmas with the help of a wise and loving older friend or relative. Personal Quotes "I write because I like to fantasize, and because I love to talk. The Best of John Bellairs , by John Bellairs
Years ago, I read a delightful little fantasy novel called The Face in the Frost . It was quirky, whimsical, and scary all at once, and it worked. It was by a man named John Bellairs. I never saw anything else by him until eventually I discovered that he'd taken to writing young adult novels. Hmm, I thought, and passed on. One of our local bookstores has a table of books for people who have finished reading about Harry Potter. I was glancing at it the other day, and found a volume called The Best of John Bellairs , which contained three juvenile novels, all of them tales of gothic horror: The House with a Clock in its Walls The Figure in the Shadows , and The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring . The three novels form a series; whether there are other books that follow the third one, I don't know. Having recently been told by numerous literary snobs that liking Harry Potter is childish and a sign of cultural infantilism, and remembering Bellairs' name fondly, I was caught by a fit of rebelliousness and bought it.

John Bellairs, The Figure in the Shadows (Puffin, reprint edition, 1993)
John Bellairs, The Letter, The Witch, and the Ring (Puffin, reprint edition, 1993) Bellairs wrote a number of gothic novels for children. He worked with three main sets of characters, and in each set there is an early-adolescent boy who is something of an outcast, and who forms a close relationship with an adult who is also an outcast. The three books reviewed here center on the adventures of Lewis Barnavelt, a bookish ten-year-old who goes to live with his Uncle Jonathan when he is orphaned. (His orphan-status is stated outright and not much mentioned again; parental angst isn't much of a theme for Bellairs.) In The House With a Clock in its Walls The Figure In the Shadows is the second of the "Barnavelt" books. Here, Lewis is the frequent victim of a school bully (bullies are indeed a common theme in Bellairs), and he wishes for strength so he can stand up to his tormentor. When he finds a lucky coin, he begins to have strange visions of a shrouded figure coming for him; and when he says a charm over the coin, a charm designed to awaken magical amulets, bad things really start to happen. The Letter, the Witch and the Ring

Apple #248: John Bellairs
Have you ever read this book?
It's The House With a Clock In Its Walls , and it's one of my favorite books, ever. Yes, it's for young adults, but a good book is a good book no matter what age it's for. If you haven't read it and if you like the Harry Potter books you should definitely check it out.
The book is about a shy, overweight kid named Lewis Barnavelt, whose parents are dead and so he moves to a small town in Michigan with his large, bearded, mysterious Uncle Jonathan. Uncle Jonathan's house is old and full of strange objects like umbrella stands and mirrors that display strange images all of which make sense when Lewis discovers that his uncle is a wizard. Not only that, but the house used to belong to a different wizard before Uncle Jonathan, a malevolent wizard. The previous wizard hid a clock somewhere in the house, a clock whose ticking becomes louder and more threatening as Halloween approaches, and Lewis must find it.
Lewis Barnavelt
, as drawn by Edward Gorey
That's the plot. But there's more. The book's author, John Bellairs, has an easy touch in creating the likable overweight Lewis, the gruff but loyal Uncle Jonathan, and the eccentric neighbor Mrs. Zimmerman who likes purple. Along with the suspense that makes me say out loud things like, "Uh-oh, that's bad," and "Ooh, I
