12. The BEATRICE Interview: 1996
A conversation with the novelist about race relations and his novel Ten Indians.

Madison Smartt Bell
"I've always felt that the Haitian slave revolution is a microcosm of American racial history.."
interviewed by Ron Hogan
In 1996, Madison Smartt Bell was chosen by the British literary magazine Granta as one of the twenty Best Young American Novelists. At the time, he had eight novels out, the most recent of which, All Souls' Rising , was in some ways a significant departure from his earlier work. In it, Bell, who was highly regarded for his portrayals of contemporary society, presented the first volume of a proposed trilogy about the Haitian slave uprising of 1791. Praised by critics nationwide, it went on to earn nominations for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner award for fiction. Ten Indians was published a few months after the Granta awards were announced. Returning to the modern world, Bell tells the brief, but intense, story of Devlin, a Baltimore child psychologist whose attempts at community outreach with a martial arts school in an inner-city black neighborhood meet with tragic consequences. RH: After the historical setting of All Souls' Rising , you jumped right back into a very contemporary urban story with this novel.

The Napkin
By Madison Smartt Bell more from this author God save me, Lia thought desperately, from one more guy who thinks any woman alone at a wedding is good for a bang in the bathroom. God strike him dead before he gets over here. Ryan set down two glasses on the table, leaving an empty chair between them. "I'm not going to dance with you," she said.
"I'm not going to ask you," Ryan said. He switched the glasses like a three-card-monte dealer. "Bourbon. Champagne. Bourbon."
"Whatever." She picked up the champagne and drank half of it. "This drek music," she said. "God, I hate this song."
"Look at that," he told her. "We do have something in common."
She only stared back at him with her large wounded eyes. She wore a simply cut black dress, slingbacks, no stockings he noticed with a little jolt. She had a couple of freckles on her shoulders, and a light gold chain strung with little red stones, garnets maybe. Her hair was a deep wet red, the color of the blood inside your body. For some reason it was hard for him to hold her eyes. "Fine," she said. "You want to make small talk."

Novelist Madison Smartt Bell and poet Wyn Cooper conjure late night music for late night people on their new Gaff Music CD, Forty Words for Fear, a dark, brooding collection of bluesy, shotgun shack tunes. Late night music for late night people.
Esquire magazine dubbed it "sonic moonshine." The New York Observer proclaimed it "a thoroughly absorbing piece of work... Call it woodshed noir." And the Brattleboro (VT) Reformer noted: "Bell, Cooper and their all-star teammates found a way to pull from the arbitrary and the unconscious to fashion a feast for the ear and a maze for the mind."

The NYTBR Best Book Votes: Why Madison Smartt Bell Didn't Chose Just One Best Book
As part of our efforts to uncover The Rest of The Best , we've been contacting the judges to ask what they voted for, and why. Here's Madison Smartt Bell
"I was happy to be included sincerely happy but I didn't put much stock in the project itself. I think they asked us all to send in a list of ten best books since a certain date. Mine included Merry Men by Carolyn Chute, Continental Drift by Russell Banks, Damascus Gate by Robert Stone, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, and probably some title by William Vollmann and Mary Gaitskill , also maybe 1982 Janine by Alasdair Grey and ... pretty fuzzy, right?
I can say with confidence that Beloved was not on my list! I'm with the 93% majority there.... but the real thing is I can pick a list of 10 great books (maybe two or three lists of 10 great books) but the idea of saying this book is clearly number one while this other book is clearly number seven.... doesn't work for me.
