Executive summary: Ocean explorer William Beebe was the first scientist to descend deep into the abyss, reporting on undersea life humans had never before seen. He was best known for his 1930s explorations using an early bathysphere designed by his colleague, Otis Barton. Circular in shape to better withstand the pressure of deep-sea depths, the 5,000-pound contraption, tethered for oxygen and electricity to a mother ship at the surface, allowed Beebe and Barton to descend to 3,028 feet beneath the ocean's surface about six times the record depth survived by previous divers. Beebe and Barton starred in a 1938 documentary about their dives, Titans of the Deep , scripted by another famous traveler, Lowell Thomas Before achieving his fame, Beebe worked as Assistant Curator of Birds at the Bronx Zoo, then led numerous scientific expeditions to far-flung corners of the world for the New York Zoological Society, usually accompanied by his first wife, Blair, an oceanographer and travel writer. He was a frequent contributor to

Over seventy percent of the earth's surface is covered by oceans, only a fraction of which has ever been explored. William Beebe was one of this century's leading pioneers into the oceanic world. The Brooklyn, New York, native possessed an unrelenting curiosity about the natural world around, and beneath, him. Through his dozens of books describing his various expeditions, Beebe brought the average citizen in closer touch with the natural world.
Beebe's interest in ornithology took him to the far reaches of Mexico, Asia, and the Galapagos Islands, and deep into the jungles of South America. In 1919 he was named director of tropical research for the New York Zoological Society. His many exotic expeditions yielded an impressive collection of rare birds for the Society's zoological gardens. In 1930 when he began his historic undersea adventures, the 51-year-old Beebe had already established himself as a scientist of international renown. Little did he know that his greatest contributions were still to come.
Beebe chose as a diving spot an area 10 miles off Nonsuch, a tiny island off of the coast of Bermuda. In June 1930, the bathysphere, along with Beebe, Barton, and a team of 26 assistants was floated out on a huge barge. Connecting the bathysphere to the barge was a 3,500-foot steel cable, almost an inch thick. A solid rubber hose, carrying telephone wires and electricity for lights, provided those within the bathysphere their only contact with the outside world. Once inside the sphere, Beebe remarked upon the tight quarters it provided: "The longer we were in it, the smaller it seemed to get."

Having grown up in a family that was very interested in animals and the great outdoors, Beebe was a naturalist early in his life. It was no surprise, therefore, when at 18 a letter he wrote on his observations of the brown creeper was published in Harper's Young People magazine. Beebe, who grew up in New Jersey, enrolled at Columbia University in 1896. Whether he officially graduated or not is in question though he never refuted that he earned a BS degree in 1899. That year he was offered a job as Assistant Bird Keeper at the Zoological Park (now the Bronx Zoo) in New York. He accepted, but the park's director, William T. Hornady, was so impressed with Beebe that he made him Assistant Curator of Birds immediately. By 1902, Beebe was Full Curator of birds. That year he married Mary Blair Rice, and the couple travelled to Mexico to study and obtain animal specimens for the park. They published an account of the experience, "Two Bird Lovers in Mexico," in 1905. Later they visited Trinidad and Venezuela and published an account of that voyage as well "Our Search For a Wilderness."

Pantheon, 286 pp., $25 On Sept. 22, 1932, William Beebe and Otis Barton climbed through a 14-inch-wide porthole into a steel sphere that rested on a barge off the coast of Bermuda. An assistant closed the hatch with a 400-pound cover, which he sealed by twisting and hammering 10 bolts. A winch then lifted the 54-inch diameter sphere and lowered it into the water. Their only connection with the world above was a telephone wire and a steel cable. The winch continued to lower Barton and Beebe until they were 1,550 feet underwater, deeper than any humans had ever descended. They were not alone. Listening in on the conversation between Beebe and Gloria Hollister, who was on the boat where the winch sat, were millions of people tuned in worldwide to NBC radio. For the next 25 minutes Beebe described what he saw as they dropped another 650 feet: "It is black as Hades." "The biggest fish yet went by. It is shaped like a barracuda." "Loads of little ... I don't know what they are."
