William Beckford Vathek an Arabian Tale Introduction
"At the first glimpse of dawn he hastened to the prison, again to importune this intractable stranger; but the rage of Vathek exceeded all bounds on finding the prison empty, the grates burst asunder, and his guards lying lifeless around him. In the paroxysm of his passion he fell furiously on the poor carcasses, and kicked them till evening without intermission" ( Vathek William Beckford, now known mainly for his peculiar Oriental tale Vathek , was born to the lord mayor of London in 1759 and from the outset lived a life of enormous wealth and notoriety. His father had made his fortune in the West Indies and was one of the richest men in England. Beckford, inheriting the wealth, began to lead a life of considerable extravagance. Scandal surrounded his life as an MP, traveller and collector. Travelling in Switzerland and Italy in the late 1770s, he met Lady Catherine Hamilton who was to become a friend and advisor and stayed with her and her husband as he would later in less salubrious circumstances. In England he found himself at the centre of the "Powderham Scandal", after his relationship with the thirteen year-old William Courtenay became well known. Remarkably, Beckford decided to stay in England temporarily at Fonthill Abbey, his vast Gothic home. However, a year later he was effectively forced to leave the country. Beckford married Lady Margaret Gordon in 1783 and became a Member of Parliament in England the next year. His wife died not long after the birth of their second daughter and he roamed on the continent again for over a decade spending as freely as was his lifelong wont. During this time he wrote

William Beckford (1760-1844)
Biographical note
Miscellaneous writer, only son of William B., Lord Mayor of London, the associate and supporter of John Wilkes, inherited at the age of 9 an enormous fortune. In these circumstances he grew up wayward and extravagant, showing, however, a strong bent towards literature. His education was entrusted to a private tutor, with whom he travelled extensively on the Continent. At the age of 22 he produced his oriental romance, Vathek c. 1781), written originally in French and, as he was accustomed to boast, at a single sitting of three days and two nights. There is reason, however, to believe that this was a flight of imagination. It is an impressive work, full of fantastic and magnificent conceptions, rising occasionally to sublimity. His other principal writings are Memoirs of Extraordinary Painters (1780), a satirical work, and Letters from Italy with Sketches of Spain and Portugal [From A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature by John W. English writer and eccentric. At 21 he inherited the family fortune. He wrote, originally in French, Vathek 1787, a fantastic Arabian Nights tale. Although frequently abroad (he wrote perceptively about his travels), he was several times elected to Parliament. In 1796 he had the family seat of Fonthill Abbey, Wiltshire, rebuilt by James Wyatt as a Gothic fantasy, and lived there until retiring to Bath 1822. His Letters from Portugal were published 1834, and in the same year his satirical Biographical Memoirs of Extraordinary Painters , originally written 1780, was reissued. hut(1)

The Virtual Infernal: Philippe de Loutherbourg, William Beckford and the Spectacle of the Sublime
Author Iain McCalman Australian National University Abstract In the autumn of 1781, shortly after being elected to the British Academy of Art as a landscape painter, Alsatian-born artist Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg was hired by the wealthy young aesthete William Beckford to prepare a private birthday spectacle at his mansion in Wiltshire. De Loutherbourg, who was also chief scenographer at Drury Lane theatre and the inventor of a recent commercial “moving picture” entertainment called the Eidophusikon , promised to produce “a mysterious something that the eye has not seen nor the heart conceived.” Beckford wanted an Oriental spectacle that would completely ravish the senses of his guests, not least so that he could enjoy a sexual tryst with a thirteen year old boy, William Courtenay, and Louisa Beckford, his own cousin’s wife.
