from a letter dated December 2, 1959 from Edith M. Beard to Phin Horton ‘I thought you might like to have a copy of the Beard Pedigree which I have spent considerable time compiling… The Beards who were in Nantucket in 1710 were Quakers and all…up to James William A. Beard and Martha Henley were Quakers. James and Martha were “married out of unity” and did not “condone” and rejoin the Quaker Church but became Methodist. I have found no skeletons; the worst, I guess, was one of the clan who was dismissed for fiddling in his home and card playing and another for joining the army. They “condoned their misconduct” and were reinstated. There is some question as to whether “Asbury” or “Ashbury” is correct in the name of William A. and James. Wm. A. I have found it both ways, but in J.W. Beard’s Journal in his own handwriting it is “Ashbury” so I feel that to be right. Or was there an ardent Methodist somewhere who made it “Asbury”?’ Unless otherwise referenced all information is taken from Edith Beard’s “Beard Pedigree”

Biography:

Initially a coal merchant, Richard Beard began the first daguerreotype studio in England in 1841. An entrepreneur by nature, Beard handled the business while scientist, John Goddard actually took the photographs. The studio was very profitable and subsequently, Beard purchased the sole patent for daguerreotypes in England, Wales, and the British colonies later in 1841. Nine years later however, he went bankrupt because of legal issues surrounding the license fees required to practice the daguerreotype process. Beard continued in the business until 1857 and then passed it on to his son.

http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/beard.htm
BEARD, Richard b. 1801; d. 1885 Richard Beard was Britain's first portrait photographer. A coal merchant for a number of years, he became interested in photography from the moment it was announced. An entrepreneur rather than a photographer, he hired the right people, and having concluded that there might be considerable potential in daguerreotypes , he purchased the patent from Daguerre for £150 a year in 1841, and on 23 March that year the first professional portrait studio in England was officially opened. This studio was on the roof of the Polytechnic Institution in Regent Street, London, (now the University of Westminster) and John Goddard , a science lecturer, was his operator. The Times (24 March 1841) reporting on the event, gave a description of the studio: "The appartment (sic) appropriated for the magical process - for so it may be termed - is....on the highest story (sic) of the institution. From the roof, which is constructed of blue glass of about a quarter of an inch thick, a very powerful light is obtained, and it is so ingeniously contrived as to revolve with the sun. In a portion of the room, nearly in the centre, an elevated seat is placed, on which the party whose likeness is to be taken sits with his head reclining backwards. In this position the sitter is told to look into a glass box, in an opposite direction, about five feet from him, in which is placed the metallic plate to be impressed with the portrait. Having done so for a few seconds, he descends, and in a few minutes afterwards a faithful likeness is presented to him.

http://photowizard.org/
Richard Beard is an up-and-coming equestrian photographer. In college he majored in graphic design with a minor in photography. He is not a push-button photographer, but looks for a shot that is unique and will transcend time. With his eye for design and art, this comes naturally. This year he was honored to be a third prizewinner in the Professional Performance category of the Equine Photographers Network. This encompassed photographers from around the world. You may visit the site at www.equinephotographers.net.
In his early years Richard spent much time in Eastern Oregon where horses run wild along the Steens Mountains, and ranchers use their horses as if they could not do without them. Today, Richard photographs horses in every sport and in every discipline. He has come to understand the horse through many different eyes: from the three-legged one-eared wild stallion he witnessed as a child to the most disciplined of dressage horses.
The aim is quality and affordable Photography. Affordability is accomplished by selling high volume. When people are able to see the results on location by viewing the photos at the onsite computers, and are able to purchase the photos immediately, sales increase and the price per photo can be lower. Richard knows that not all people can afford the high cost of photos.
