Home INTERVIEW: Greg Bear Hugo and Nebula Award winning author Greg Bear has been writing professionally for forty years. His works range from memorable short fiction, like "Blood Music" and "Hardfought", to novels like Eon The Forge of God and Darwin's Radio . His latest novel is a a near-future thriller called Quantico , available from Vanguard Press. (See SF Signal review .) SF Signal had the opportunity to talk to Greg via email about the Quantico Eon and making books available online for free.
SF Signal: Hi, Greg. What prompted you to write Quantico ? How did you get the idea, and did that idea change as you were writing it?
Greg Bear: A visit to the FBI Academy to attend a conference on the future of crime and criminal investigation gave me a chance to speak with agents and law enforcement officers from around the country. It was a fascinating and sobering experiencethese people have some of the most difficult jobs on the planet, are under constant scrutiny, and without them, we'd be in very serious trouble indeed. The stresses these responsibilities produce, in a time of political change and terrible threat, seemed to me perfect for a new kind of thrillera near-future, hardcore look at where we might end up if we keep making strategic screw-ups, and continue to misuse and abuse our front-line defenders, be they military personnel or law enforcers.
SFS: Was there any backlash from the book?

Of all the illusions of childhood, the one he hated to lose most was this: that humans worked according to unspoken but noble goals, that they followed an intrinsic path to justice, that they would resist error and move towards understanding.
(More quotations in my last diary
Why should the goals be unspoken? The goals are knowledge, justice, liberty, equality. There is no illusion: local groups of evil-hearted humans may prevail in certain communities at certain times, but the overall arc of history does indeed bend towards justice This book tries to justify injustice used in the greater cause of justice, but it relies too heavily on cheap dramatic tricks to succeed in challenging my childhood illusions :) The premises of the story: 1) a purely evil alien civilization, the Killers, send probes out to destroy as many other civilizations as they can. Earth is destroyed. 2) The Benefactors, another powerful alien civilization, rescue some humans and tell them of the Law: the Killers must be exterminated by the races they've tried to destroy. The problem I have with the first premise is: There is no motivation other than pure evil given for the Killers' actions.

Award-winning writer Greg Bear hears the music of SF in his blood
By Nick Gevers reg Bear is unquestionably one of the leading figures in contemporary SF. In 22 novels and three major collections, he has fused informed and inspired scientific speculation with visionary inquiry into the biological, social and psychological roots and potentials of the human species, and while writing tales that apparently fit within the parameters of this or that subgenre, he has consistently transcended any such limits. In thus expanding the SF envelope, his profound grasp of evolutionary and exotic detail and his talent for sympathetic characterization have been invaluable. And there is often present in his work a sense of cosmic depth, an apocalyptic poetry or rhetoric of transformation that points inexorably to what we must become. Bear's early novels were exercises in high imaginative aspiration that, despite some technical limitations, very definitely prefigured the achievements of his mature works.

Greg Bear was either seeing a potential future, writing a cautionary tale, or having visions when he wrote the novel, based on his same-named short story, "Blood Music." Like many of his novels that followed, Bear's central theme of human genetics gone amok fills the backdrop for "Blood Music,", a classic "what if" story of science fiction. What if: A brilliant and socially-stunted genetic scientist working in a corporate lab, attempting to understand the fundamental communication scheme used by bacteria, is told to halt his work, and instead decides to make himself a living laboratory, smuggling out the single-celled organisms he has endowed with a bizarre form of gestalt intelligence? The central character is not a likable man. He is not someone with whom you can easily sympathize, and I personally was revolted by his lack of concern by knowingly endangering everyone around him. He reminds me much too much of the classic vision of the scientist seeking knowledge for knowledge's sake, with no regard of consequences.

        A Science Fiction Museum, Hurrah!
        By Cheryl Morgan
8 December 2003 S omething is stirring in Seattle. Seattle Center was the site of the 1962 World's Fair. It has the famous Space Needle. It is connected to the city center by a monorail. It is the way the future was: Jetsons and all. But the future is coming back to Seattle Center, and that future is us. In a striking purple building designed by the architect Frank Gehry, a new museum is being born. Previously the building was home solely to the Experience Music Project, but part of it has now been taken over by something called Experience Science Fiction (ESF). The new museum is the brainchild of Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen. Although most of the practical organizational tasks are being handled by Allen's own company, Vulcan Inc., the museum has a stellar Advisory Board of science fiction luminaries. It includes Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, Steven Spielberg, Ray Harryhausen, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, Michael Whelan, Arthur C. Clarke, Charles Brown, Octavia Butler, Bjo Trimble, and Forry Ackerman, to name but a few. The chairman of this illustrious group is Seattle-based writer Greg Bear. I talked to Bear to find out how he got involved and what we can expect from the museum. Cheryl Morgan How did you get involved with the museum? Did you get a phone call saying, "Hi, this is Paul Allen?"
