A Cautionary Tale about the Bioterrorism Threat
Guide Rating - Some people's terrorism nightmares are worse than other people's. Novelist Greg Bear's puts even the most radical to shame. Never mind nuclear weapons in the hands of a rogue nation, or even the U.S. government's periodic warnings that Al Qaeda is gaining strength. In Quantico, Bear joins most existing conspiracy theories, and a few new ones, to create the mother of all terrorist plots.
Christian Fanatics, Muslim Terrorists and Violent Jewish Radicals, with Anthrax
Quantico tells a cautionary tale of U.S. government agencies more interested in protecting their own turf than shutting down a global bioterrorism plot. Bear does an exceptional job letting loose multiple narratives and tying them up without tripping.

Greg Bear
Greg Bear (born August 20, 1951) is a science fiction author. His work has covered themes of galactic conflict (Forge of God books), artificial universes (Eon series) and accelerated evolution (Blood Music, Darwin's Radio and Darwin's Children). He is the son-in-law of Poul Anderson. Bear was born in San Diego, California. From 1968 to 1973 he attended San Diego State University, from which he received an A.B. degree. In 1975, he married Christina M. Nielson, but they divorced in 1981. He remarried in 1983, to Astrid Anderson. The scale and detailed science of his work makes clear that he should be classified as a hard science fiction author. Still, some question the scientific foundation of his work. One question is whether the bacteria in

SPECIAL TO THE P-I Greg Bear, a multi-award-winning author for his science-fiction work, looks into the near future with his latest taut and compelling thriller, "Quantico." COMING UP GREG BEAR WHAT: Discusses "Quantico"
WHEN: 7 p.m. tonight
WHERE: University Book Store, 4326 University Way N.E.; 206-634-3400 In his vision of the world just around the corner, terrorism is still rampant and FBI agents are trying to apprehend a man who has developed a nasty form of anthrax. In addition, the characters are dealing with the aftermath of not only the events of 9/11 but also another horrible event on 10/4, which involved an attack on a ferry in Puget Sound. Speaking from his home in Seattle, Bear discussed "Quantico" and the grim future depicted. Asked about the attack he envisioned on 10/4, he replied, "We're told another large-scale terrorist attack is inevitable by those people who have committed so many resources to preventing it. They likely know what they're talking about." When asked about the spark of his latest novel, Bear said, "I gave a lecture at the FBI Academy in the summer of 2000, as a part of a seminar on the future of law enforcement. Interacting with FBI agents, touring the academy, watching students go through training and imagining what their experiences might be in coming decades was the germ of the novel."

REFERENCES COLUMNS Horror Science Fiction No matter how much we may miss them, we're happy the dead can't give us a phone call, or send us a postcard from wherever they may be. "Having a wonderful time, wish you were here"? I don't think so. Some empty spaces, no matter how much they may hurt, need to stay empty. Think what might fill them if they didn't. Lovecraft and many a horror writer since have kept the shivers coming by creating the shadows, by exposing the emptiness. "We are the hollow men," TS Eliot says, and we instinctively shudder and step back from that description. The most effective horrors are not those we see or are shown, but those we are led to imagine. We all know what festers within the emptiness. Peter Russell doesn't just know the emptiness, he lives it. Since the murder of Daniella, one of his twin daughters, he's been divorced and aimless. Now, the death of his best friend Phil leaves him even more hollow. He barely gets by, running errands for Joseph Benoliel, an old Hollywood producer who lives in hiding on his Malibu estate. He and Michelle, his young wife, are Peter's last lifelines to this world. It's at their estate that he meets Stanley Weinstein, the head salesman for a new type of cell phone called Trans. But Trans is much more than a cell phone, Weinstein says. He's unfortunately unaware of just how much more.

BLOOD MUSIC
Vergil Ulam is an unconventional researcher who is working on biochips that use DNA for information processing. But he also has a private sideline which leads to his developing intelligent human white blood cells. When he is ordered to destroy his cultures he injects himself with the cells to preserve them and walks out. The modified cells quickly take over his body, transforming it for their own purposes, and soon find a way to spread to other human beings, who begin to dissolve into vast protoplasmic sheets in which individual identity is lost. So far we seem to be reading a fairly ordinary horror story, but Bear is really writing something quite different. Before long the cells take over the whole of North America, which becomes covered with multicoloured layers of organic material in which the erstwhile human inhabitants are swallowed up. They are not destroyed, however, but rather are subsumed into some form of universal mystical consciousness. The noocytes, as one of the characters calls them by analogy with Teilhard de Chardin's noosphere, are not hostile to human beings and respect the wishes of those who don't wish to be transformed. They also have acquired extraordinary powers: when the Russians launch nuclear weapons against America they prevent them from exploding. For reasons that are not made entirely clear, a few people are resistant to this transformation and we witness events through their eyes as they struggle to understand what is happening. The transformation is at first confined to North America and the rest of the world tries to keep it there, but it is only a temporary respite; at the end of the book the whole population of the Earth seems to have been transmuted to a different plane of existence, leaving behind the empty shells of cities, towns, and houses. Finally the new phase of being extends outwards to envelop the whole Solar system. Indeed, will it even stop there? I think we are meant to understand that the universe is reaching Teilhard's Omega Point, a mystical and indescribable apotheosis.
