A Conversation With Greg Bear
By Greg Knollenberg Greg Bear is one of modern science fiction's great writers. His books are known for their cutting-edge hard science, rich characterization and vivid illustration of the impact science and technology have on our society. He is the author of twenty-four books, which have been translated into a dozen languages. He has won four Nebulas and two Hugos for his fiction. He began writing when he was very young, and was first published in Robert Lowndes' Famous Science Fiction when he was only fifteen years old. It took him five years to get his next short story published, but he was being published on a regular basis by age 23. The first novel Bear sold, Hegira (Dell), appeared in 1979. His novel, Moving Mars (Tor, 1993), won the 1994 Nebula Award for best novel. Recent novels by Greg Bear include:

The Opener of the Way
An Interview with Greg Bear
by Nick Gevers INTRODUCTION Bear's early novels are exercises in high imaginative aspiration that, despite some technical limitations, very definitely prefigure the achievements of his mature works. Hegira Beyond Heaven's River (1980), and Strength of Stones (1981) are entries in a space operatic future history that ranges in focus from mere centuries hence to the end of time itself. Psychlone (1979) ventures into technological horror; The Infinity Concerto (1984) and The Serpent Mage (1986), later combined as Songs of Earth and Power , are striking fantasies that conclude Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" and discuss the mechanics of world creation; Corona (1984) is one of the more impressive Star Trek novels. These books, most of them since revised in varying degrees, form the record of a promising genre journeyman; but the Master was not long in emerging. Two novels mark this transition: Blood Music (1985), a potent exploration of how the very small might assimilate the very large, and Eon (1985), which introduces humans of the near future to the tunnel their descendants have driven to infinity. This epic of the "Way" continues still more apocalyptically in

Set in a near future where the war against terror has come home to North American streets, a climate of fear pervades daily life, and the FBI are waging a stalled battle against home-grown malcontents, and the political system itself. Young FBI agents William Griffin, Fouad Al-Husam and classmate Jane Rowland are on the trail of a domestic threat; a genetically targeted plague, which if released could eliminate entire sectors of society.

It has only been eleven years since the SHEVA retrovirus first made itself known, but the impact has had terrible consequences. The most obvious of these is the children. reviewed by Cindy Lynn Speer
This book collects three stories about women, and these women are all in some sort of transition, on a journey to accept themselves, as well as to find their place. As the author says in the introduction, "These three stories have a theme in common: the female psyche, multiplied and divided... At any rate, throughout my career (and for whatever reason), I've been fascinated by the female voice."

"Darwin's Radio"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark Jun 16, 2002) With the mapping of the human genome project nearly complete, there are all sorts of science fiction novels one might imagine, but as far as I know, not one comes even close to the events Greg Bear puts together in Darwin's Radio . This is an exceptional combination of up-to-date genetics; a true-to-life story that speculates on how society would handle the subspeciation of homo sapien; and an incredible imagination as to what the new human might be like. All the elements that make up a good sci-fi read. This Nebula Award winning novel centers around three main characters Kaye Lang, Mitch Rafelson and Christopher Dickens. Each has their own community of trusted friends and family, political connections and professional work relations, so there is a lot to keep track of, but Greg Bear keeps the story moving and the connections fresh for us. And of course, the three meet up and share their information when they realize that what they know could have a pivotal bearing on the future of the human race.

Wertzone Classics: Blood Music by Greg Bear
Back in the 1980s Greg Bear became one of the biggest names in American SF through his exploration of big concepts such as biological technology and vast space constructions, although he also gained a reputation for blowing lots of really huge things up a lot (spaceships, infinite corridors through the space/time continuum, the planet Earth). Along with Gregory Benford and David Brin, Bear was one of the 'Killer Bs' and penned several notable novels throughout the decade. In the 1990s his work tailed off somewhat and today he seems to mainly work on SF thrillers. Hopefully one day he will return to his former mileu and again dazzle readers with large-scale epics intent on putting the sense of wonder back into SF.
Bear is perhaps best known for Eon (his quantum rewrite of Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama ), but for me his strongest novel remains Blood Music . Originally published as a short story in 1983 and winning the 1983 Nebula Award for Best Novelette and the 1984 Hugo Award for the same category, it was expanded to novel-length in 1985 and was nominated for both the Nebula and Hugo Best Novel awards.
Vergil Ulam is a biotech researcher working at the cutting edge of genetic engineering, helping in the creation of organic computer systems. Ulam becomes obsessed with his own brand of research, believing he can create sentient cells within the human body. Eventually he is fired, but carries on his research at home. This leads to a series of catastrophic events, culminating in the quarantining of the North American continent and resulting in the transformation of humanity as we know it.

Darwin's Children by Greg Bear comments
Darwin's Children comes to continue the story from Darwin's Radio
My general feeling is that this is not a very good book or series. The basic ideas that started it are interesting, although pretty hard to advocate to a scientist, certainly interesting from a literary point of view, giving multiple opportunities for tension, drama, unexpected, etc. Unfortunately, Greg Bear failed to capitalise those ideas, writing a book that has only a few characters that kind of stumble upon the most important clues for the book subject; it all happens in the USA, with almost no regard to what could or would have happened elsewhere. In a time of a great crisis, the international situation is put on hold, like every nation would take a time-out and ignore its neighbours. And the style is really not touching any emotional chord whatsoever.
Let me summarize: the sudden leap in human evolution is treated by the politicians as a disease, the new species being imprisoned in what could only be described as concentration camps. The entire U.S. democracy and freedom collapses like a giant soap bubble, while the fear of every child bearing family transcends to racism and fascism in no time. The few enlightened people that understand what is going on and try to protect the evolved offspring are also persecuted and surveillanced.
So here we have the eternal American obsession with children in distress and terrified families combined with concentration camps for some of their children, racism and civil disobedience, a newly discovered and frightening evolutionary mechanism, cutting edge genetics and archaeology. This could have been a fantastic story! But no, what came out was an impersonal account of hard to believe actions or feelings coming from emotionally stunted characters. And what was worse is that whenever the tension grew and there was a hint of a great thing happening, the author would make a sudden leap in time, after all had already happened, without describing much anyway.

by Greg Bear robota Isaac Asimov began writing his robot stories in the 1940s, and published the first compendium volume, I, Robot Astounding Science Fiction in March of 1942. In a conversation in December of 1940, Campbell presented the rules to Asimov as a fait accompli , saying that he had abstracted them from principles made obvious in the stories themselves. Later, the Three Laws became the key to plot development in the robot stories, and as Asimov merged his robot stories with his Foundation stories and novels, the Three Laws played a significant role there, as well. Today, they are taken for granted – by science fiction writers and robot designers alike. The Three Laws seem almost self-evident as guidelines for any variety of artificial servant – at least, servants capable of moving around or otherwise taking significant action. Thus, while a modern thermostat (a particularly simple kind of robot) has neither the complexity nor the power to save or harm a human, the onboard computer of a spaceship may. (Asimov was indignant that the HAL 2001: A Space Odyssey The Outer Limits . But Asimov gave the robots an endearing personality, a feckless but determined sense of honor and dignity that has not been equaled since.
