Greg Bear's style is epic, although his characters are intimately drawn. I don't think I've read a single one of his books that didn't have me riveted from cover to cover!
    • The Infinity Concerto (1984), and the sequel The Serpent Mage (1986) - a story about the Little People. Bear's version are definitely not nice fairies and elves, but nasty, mysterious, and lethal people. Eon (1985), it's sequel Eternity (1988), and it's side story Legacy (1995) - intrigue and mystery reminiscent of Herbert's Dune or Dickson's Dorsai in a post millenial future, complete with speculations on the nature of space and time, and some of the consequences. Hard SF the way it is supposed to be written! The Forge of God (1987), and its sequel Anvil of Stars (1992) - The end of the world, and how humanity sent a small team of children lead by a group of alien robots to seek revenge. I'm told that these books are currently (2004) being made into a movie. Queen of Angels (1990), was a mystery set in the relatively near future.

Review: Dead Lines by Greg Bear
SILENCE IS... SPOOKY
What if some of the things you see every day aren't really there? What if they just look normal? You seldom compare notes with anybody, do you? You don't bring along a video camera and record every minute of your daily life to see what you might have seen that wasn't there after all.
Dead Lines

For those who would dine on old, dead dreams of glory, Hollywood is always willing to set a place at the table. In his house in the Glendale Hills, Peter Russell has been dining for years on his defunct dream. A one-time creator of "nudie films" and Playboy cartoons, he planned novels, plays, short stories that somehow never were completed. Peter's creative stream was first diverted by the easy sex of his heyday, and then dammed up by the murder of one of his twin daughters.
Now he retains just enough charm to get by. He provides the likable "face" of business for a misanthropic millionaire, and charms the trophy wife of his employer, his remaining daughter, and just about every woman he meets (except his ex-wife). And even though he is not in the movie business anymore, he does still have connections.

Is there such a thing as a stand-alone novel any more? It seems like every book I see these days is volume x in the n volume series. Even debut novels come with a sub-title that invariably reads something like - The First Book In The Magnificent ***** Trilogy. So where does the poor sod who is just starting out go? Particularly if he wants to read the latest by well known authors, rather than trolling through their back catalogues.
Greg Bear is one of the most highly thought of contemporary SF writers but, for whatever strange reason, I have never actually read anything by him before. So when LEGACY appeared I figured it was an opportunity to correct the aberration. Admittedly, the novel was sub-titled A Magnificent Return To The Universe Of Eon, but as it was not namechecked as Volume X in the series, I thought I would be pretty safe with it - why would publishers wish to launch a novel that was inaccessible to new readers?
Well, I don't know the answer to the previous question but Mr Bear has made few concessions to readers not familiar with the Universe Of Eon or its infinitely long artificial universe, the Way. (The italicised phrase is lifted directly from the book jacket because I frankly still do not quite understand the concept of the Way. It is never covered in LEGACY as it is not central to the plot. The problem is, it is referred to constantly as it is important to the characters who inhabit the novel.)

Quantico by Greg Bear
October 3, 2007 by cjwriter In the meantime Bear’s latest is Quantico , a novel based heavily on the fear of extremism. His story is set in a near-future where the Terror War is in its second decade and not progressing well. The Dome of the Rock has been destroyed by terrorists and a second attack of the scale of 9/11 has rocked the US; the threat of terrorists obtaining chemical and biological weapons has never been higher. In this atmosphere, three young FBI agents have recently graduated from Quantico; it is believed they could be among the last to graduate as critics seek to shut down the FBI for good. But when rumours of an immense planned terrorist attack begin to emerge, the agents find themselves in a race against time to stop it. The first thing which struck me about Quantico Quantico Quantico Quantico are also strong. The characters come across as flawed and believable, reacting realistically to the situation they find themselves in; Rebecca Rose, for instance, shows the impact of living with terror for 20 years, obsessed with cleanliness and her job, so much so that she has no other life. That said, a few things didn’t work as well as I might have liked. The main problem is that the ending, though bringing about a resolution, feels slightly abrupt; after a lengthy lead-in I would have liked to have seen the consequences followed though a bit more, to see the full impact on the characters. Also the internal politics of the FBI play a large and necessary role in the novel, but in certain scenes seem to weigh the story down more than in others, and more than any of the science. Likewise you could say that some of the government infighting seems slightly forced after a second 9/11 (although it might be accurate given the current partisanship).

The Novels of Greg Bear
Last updated 1997 Greg Bear and David Brin share more than last names that start with B. They are two of the best SF writers currently active. Bear is not quite as good a Brin, he has a tendency to let his stories run away from him. But when it comes to big ideas, Bear is your man. If you want to have a mind expanding experience, read Eon
The Anvil of the Stars
1992 - This novel is Bear's finest work (so far). Anvil is nominally a sequel to The Forge of God which is your typical end-of-the-world novel. Anvil uses none of the same characters but uses the destruction of the earth as the prime motive force for the plot of the story. I was completely engaged by the book, I thought the characters were strong and real, I thought the moral questions were deep and troubling, and the ending was just perfect. Bear has never ended a book so well. One person made the comment that the moral question posed by Anvil was very much a question of the nuclear age. Namely, when is it justified to annihilate someone?
Eon
1985 - This is a story that starts in one place with one plot and then, midway through, becomes something totally different. Its is a bit like making a movie that combines the first half of Apollo 13 and the last half of Star Trek, The Motion Picture. While Bear does both halves of the book reasonably well, the book just does not hang together. Bear has tried to deal with this problem. First, he wrote a sequel called

An Interview with Greg Bear Greg Bear is a science fiction and fantasy author who has published more than thirty books professionally. To date, he has won two Hugo Awards and five Nebula Awards for his fiction and is one of two authors to win a Nebula in every category. He has the singular honor of being married to Astrid Anderson Bear, whose father was the renowned science fiction author Poul Anderson. His most recent novel, Quantico , is a near-future examination of law enforcement, politics, and terror both domestic and religious. With each successive book that he completes, he continually earns his place among the greats, both contemporary and golden age, of the speculative fiction community. Aberrant Dreams: You published your first professional story, The Destroyers , at sixteen. How do you think your views of science fiction have changed since that time?
Even then, I was aware that fantasy was going to be more popular than science fiction, but I thought I should put a stronger focus on my science fiction. So, I went off in that direction and published more science fiction than fantasy. I recall that back when I was thinking about Eon and Blood Music , I was also writing the sequel to The Infinity Concerto The Serpent Mage Aberrant Dreams: I really liked the whole presentation of The Serpent Mage and The Infinity Concerto
Greg Bear: Yeah ,those two novels were published in the eighties, in some nice hard cover editions.
