Peter S. Beagle goes back to his fine and private place to continue the saga of The Last Unicorn
By Cristopher Hennessey-DeRose The Lord of the Rings A Fine and Private Place , a benchmark in fantasy, and graduated with a degree in creative writing. A Fine and Private Place was soon followed by The Last Unicorn , which not only became a much-beloved novel but also became an equally acclaimed animated feature-length film, now available on DVD. His passion for writing led him to write Ralph Bakshi's 1978 film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings , a film that for years seemed the only vision viewers would receive of Tolkien's legendary world of Middle-earth. Beagle, who continues to frequent the college lecture circuit, has also dipped his feet in the waters of the world of Star Trek , and back into his own with a follow-up novelette to The Last Unicorn Two Hearts . His other forays into writing have included the nonfiction The Garden of Earthly Delights , the two-volume collections of Unicorn -related fantasy

    INTRODUCTION
Beagle is praised for his ability to develop characters, his use of incongruous humor, and his marriage of traditional fables with modern culture and settings. His novel The Last Unicorn (1968) is consistently cited by critics as a masterpiece in the fantasy genre.
    Biographical Information
Beagle was born April 20, 1939, in New York City to Simon and Rebecca (Soyer) Beagle, both public school teachers. He grew up in a literary family; his grandfather wrote fantasy stories in Hebrew. Beagle published his first story in Seventeen magazine at the age of seventeen. He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he studied creative writing, receiving a B.A. in 1959. In 1960, at the age of twenty-one, he published his first novel

As the story opens, a talking raven arrives in a cemetery in the Bronx, New York to deliver a stolen baloney to a man who has been living in the cemetery for the past 19 years. Mr. Rebeck. Shortly he meets Mrs. Klapper who is here to visit the grave of her husband, Morris. The cast of major characters is filled out by a couple of ghosts, each of whom we meet on the occasion of his or her funeral.

The author has always eschewed the falseness of sentimentality, while wringing all manner of emotions from his audience. That he does so with such unfailing grace is what has made him one of the finest of modern fantasists. Each one of the stories gathered here is aimed directly at the heart, and whether told in the voice of a sparky girl or an old man burdened by too many memories the tone is always the same. This, it tells us through all the joys and excitements, is the way we experience the sadness of the world.

Written by: Samuel K. Sloan (SoSF Managing News Director) Peter S. Beagle is the famous author of novels (fantasy and nonfiction), and screenplays. He is also a talented musician and singer. His very first novel, A Fine and Private Place , was published when he was only 19 years old and is considered a classic. But, his most recognized work is The Last Unicorn , rated as one of the top ten fantasy novels of all time. Peter is equally popular for his screenplays, including the critically acclaimed episode on Star Trek: The Next Generation , titled "Sarek." He wrote the screenplay for the 1978 Ralph Bakshi-animated version of The Lord of the Rings , and adapted The Last Unicorn on film. His other claim to fame is his ownership of the literary estate of science fiction author Edgar Pangborn. We will be talking to Peter about the ongoing legal battle over monies owed him for The Last Unicorn , and other projects he is currently involved in.

Peter S. Beagle Wins Small Press Award!
      The Line Between.
Accepting the award for Peter Beagle was . . . me.
You can imagine how delighted I was. Peter S. Beagle is an important figure in modern fantasy and a personal hero of mine. I was a teenager when I discovered The Last Unicorn and A Fine and Private Place , and realized that major fantasy work was being written by somebody who was still alive . (Okay, Tolkien was still alive back then too. But even then we all knew we were going to have to wait until he was dead for his next book.) And of course I thought: If he can do it, then why not me? It was a major goad to my ambitions.
My notion of a literary award generally involves first-class flights, lavish financial compensations, incredibly costly dinners, and four-star hotel accommodations complete with hot and cold-running groupies. The way I look at it, if it's good enough for Harlan, it's good enough for me. But I gladly make an exception in this case, because (and I know this is a cliche), far more than the mighty international conglomerate, it is the small press, the minuscule press, that remains, and will surely remain, the life force behind what we here create.

Peter S. Beagle: Beloved Author Needs Our Help
Have you read any books by award-winning author Peter S. Beagle? Do you remember The Last Unicorn? Have you ever seen a child's wonder while watching the animated movie adaptation of that book? Or do you remember the animated (Bakshi-directed) Lord of the Rings from the 70s?  Peter is an incredibly gifted writer, but perhaps not quite as talented a businessman. Twice he has been burned out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by media companies who either took advantage of him or aren't paying him what they contractually owe. For example: It's hard to believe, but more than 25 years after its release, he STILL hasn't gotten paid any earnings for the

Beagle's Immortal Unicorn Released 1999 Discussion: Peter S. Beagle I am surprised there are no discussions about Peter Beagle here. I am about to finish "The Last Unicorn" and I must say it is one of the most beautiful fantasy books I have read. I have seen the movie when I was about 6 and seen it a couple of times... I watched it again as an adult and still loved it. Peter Beagle's work, though simple in prose is complex in content. It is hauntingly beautiful. I just love, love, love the book it is better than the movie... I wish I have read the book before seeing the animated movie. jeeper The Last Unicorn is a very nice novel. I read it a couple of years ago, and hadn't even heard of the movie at that point, which worked in my favour, all things considered. My favourite Beagle book, however, is Tamsin. For a guy of his age and generation, he does a remarkably good job at constructing a believable 13 year teenage character going through alienation doldrums.

    Peter S. Beagle
By Daniel Lichterman Photo By Dan Monick Peter S. Beagle seems to recoil at the notion of being considered the iconic American fantasist. The idea that he has become an established fixture in the American cultural memory makes the author feel like a living anachronism. “I was just about getting used to the 20th century when they rang the 21st in on me.” With the exception of his passion for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Beagle feels himself at great distance from the visual overload of American pop culture. He recalls a clerk at his local Safeway confronting him for his failure to recognize the celebrities featured on the checkout literature, mockingly asking, “Do you realize that you’re completely out of your time?” Born in 1939 and raised in the Bronx just one block from the expansive Woodlawn Cemetery, Beagle already knew he would be a writer by the time he was 10. As a 19-year-old undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh, he wrote his first novel, A Fine and Private Place, a tale of the intertwined existences of the living and dead, set in a New York cemetery much like the one where he played hide-and-seek as a child. He followed that up with what is widely considered his masterpiece and one of the greatest fantasy novels of all time, 1968’s The Last Unicorn, which has sold over six million copies worldwide since its initial publication.

Writer's range extends from unicorns to elephants
    Feb. 25, 1995
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us A little known fact: It turns out that fantasy writer Peter S. Beagle of Davis likes elephants as much as he likes unicorns. He is most well-known for a book he wrote in 1968, "The Last Unicorn." But his most recent book, a book of non-fiction, is "In the Presence of Elephants" (Capra Press, 1995, $16.95). At fantasy conventions, adults frequently tell him how much they loved reading "The Last Unicorn" when they were children. "It gives me a turn," Beagle admitted in a recent interview, "because I remember finishing it last week." Does he tire of people endlessly associating him with one book, which isn't even his favorite? "No, I consider the alternative," he said. "In the Presence of Elephants" is a slim book of black and white photographs taken by Los Angeles Times photographer Genaro Molina. The subject of the book is the elephants that live at the Performing Animal Welfare Society, PAWS, located in Galt, where Pat Derby rescued a herd of four elephants. Beagle wrote the text accompanying the marvelous photos. He said he first met Derby, a small red-headed woman, at a Hollywood party about 25 years ago. Derby, he recalled, was wearing a beautiful green dress and cuddling a coyote puppy.
