He is also a talented guitarist and folk singer. He wrote his first novel, A Fine and Private Place, when he was only 19 years old. Today he is best known as the author of The Last Unicorn which routinely polls as one of the top ten fantasy novels of all time, and at least two of his other books ( A Fine and Private Place and I See By My Outfit ) are considered modern classics. He wrote the teleplay for episode 71 of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation titled " Sarek ." He wrote the screenplay for the 1978 Ralph Bakshi -animated version of The Lord of the Rings the film which first inspired a teenaged Peter Jackson to read J.R.R. Tolkien , and he wrote an introduction page for the American edition of The Lord of the Rings in the early 1970s. His work as a screenwriter interrupted his early career direction as a novelist, magazine nonfiction author, and short-story writer. But in the mid-'90s he returned to prose fiction of all lengths, and has produced new works at a steady pace since. In addition to his own body of work, he is heir to the literary estates of science fiction author

Beagle is one of the most respected fantasy authors, having received wide-ranging critical acclaim and numerous awards. Despite his critical success, he remains, oddly, not as well-known outside hardcore fannish circles as he ought to be. Beagle is best known for his novel The Last Unicorn, a wonderful novel that has remained in print since its first publication in 1968. In addition to his print accomplishments, Beagle has written a number of TV and movie screenplays, including the screenplay for the 1982 Rankin-Bass animation of The Last Unicorn and "Sarek", one of the best episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Reviewed by Justin Howe
30 January 2007 Michael Moorcock , in his study of epic fantasy, Wizardry and Wild Romance Peter S. Beagle 's latest collection of short stories, The Line Between , shows him to be a fantasist consistent with Ballard's words. In his introduction Beagle describes himself as someone who "in life and art has never been able to laugh without being intensely aware of tears, or to shine a light on horror without also illuminating beauty. So it goes still for everything I write" (xii). And he sums up the collection: "There it is: that invisible boundary between conscious and not, between reality and fantasy, between here (whatever 'here' is) and there (whatever 'there' might be), between the seen and the seen's true nature. A line neither one thing nor ever quite the other, but now eternally between" (xi). The collection opens with the story " Gordon, the Self-Made Cat ," the humorous tale of a mouse attempting to better his lot in life. Gordon embarks on his quest by enrolling himself in cat school, where he soon excels in his studies. Before long he has turned the natural world on its head, and the cats come to see him as a threat to their way of life. It's not a spectacular story, but it possesses enough quirky humor to hold the reader's attention until the last page is turned. First up is the main draw of the collection, the Hugo Award-winning novelette "Two Hearts." It's a phenomenal story, and one I have to fight from taking over this entire review. I have not encountered anyone who has read it without getting at least misty eyed. The story features characters from "

THIS IS NOT RIGHT In 1978, Peter wrote the screenplay for the animated version of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. It took draft after draft written under ferocious deadline pressure to make everything work. Producer Saul Zaentz made a lot of promises to Peter in order to get him to do that work in return for no money beyond his original "consulting fee" of only $5,000 — promises that Zaentz almost immediately reneged on.
The animated movie was only a moderate success at the box office, but the power of Peter's script helped the film work magic on a young Peter Jackson, inspiring him to go read Tolkien's books. ( Hear Jackson say so for himself at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, on February 6th, 2004 .) Where that led...well, we all know where that led.

Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by Peter S. Beagle
This is a brief discussion of Peter S. Beagle and, of course, of some books by Peter S. Beagle
A Few Words About Peter S. Beagle
Peter S. Beagle had, depending on how one looks at it, the great fortune or the great misfortune to start his career at the top. His first book, A Fine and Private Place , written when he was yet quite young, was highly successful both commercially and artistically. Beginning a career with such a work has obvious advantages, but it raises extraordinary expectations. In the event, Beagle did not put out a second novel until eight years later. Remarkably, that book too ( The Last Unicorn ) was a double success.
Tamsin ), while worthwhile, is not something no one else could have written, at all or as well.
That said, those seven remaining books would suffice to establish and sustain his reputation forever, did he never write another word.
Beagle, like virtually all who get high marks on this site, is first of all a craftsman of language. Craft in language can manifest itself in many ways. One such way is poetic, full and rich and colorful and image-laden. But, while there are symphonies of prose, there are also chamber pieces. Beagle is superb at the clean, simple-seeming language that quietly says a great deal more than it seems to:

An issue of Green Man devoted to Peter S. Beagle and his works
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to a particularly splendid gathering at the Green Man . Everyone comfy? Gotta drink and a cushion? Well, then! It's my profound pleasure to present to you our extraordinary Guest, Mr. Peter S. Beagle. That's him there, the pleasant-looking silver-bearded gentleman in the best armchair, by the side of the fire that doesn't smoke. Nod and wave politely, please. Cat Eldridge, our esteemed editor, has asked me, Kathleen Bartholomew , to give an introduction for Mr. Beagle and his work, on the off chance that some of you were raised in caves far from bookstores or libraries. I've prepared a few remarks for the occasion... According to my notes here... "...truly remarkable! Layers of malty complexities of figs and a raisiny fruitiness; balances nicely with a clovey spiciness; develops into a Champagne like acidity." But they are not too far off the mark for Peter S. Beagle, either: his work is complex, familiar and exotic together, sweet and rich and yet possessed of a clarifying strength that both intoxicates and clears away dross. One could do worse than compare any writer to a really fine ale, of course, but there is more to Peter S. Beagle than his ability to make us drunk on beauty: though he does excel at that. Peter S. Beagle was born in the Spring, on April 20, 1939. However, according to an old reference on

He's a marvelous writer, and a fascinating man to talk to. http://terrania.us/biblio/ Peter talks about his writing career, his experience scripting the Bakshi animated Lord of the Rings movie (for a pittance and a promise for more work that wasn't kept), how the company that owns his movie The Last Unicorn has systematically ripped him off through Hollywood accounting, the Star Trek Next Generation episode he wrote (and Diane Duane chimes in with her own Trek writing experiences), and many more fascinating things. I'm really proud of that show, and delighted to have had the chance to discuss all those things with him.
