Stephen Baxter on Games Workshop
Here's an interesting article by Stephen Baxter about the history of Games Workshop and Warhammer fiction. I had been dimly aware that Baxter had once written something for Warhammer (turns out it was actually two stories), so it was interesting to see this account by one of my favorite authors. Warhammer's not my thing (I can barely draw stickmen, so I shudder to think what would result if I tried to paint miniatures), but I still found the article to be pretty informative.

Ring
by Stephen Baxter
A book review by Mark L. Olson
Ring is a rare creature indeed: This is Good Old Fashioned Super Science of the Arcot, Wade and Morey school, and it is also well written and this is really impressive to me completely consistent with what we currently know about the universe. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Unfortunately, Ring is a British hardback and it is unlikely to be out in the US for at least another year. I picked it up at Conadian (the 1994 Worldcon) and it doesn't have a prayer of getting on the Hugo ballot. Nonetheless, I recommend it and I intend to nominate it. Nearly Baxter's entire corpus takes place in a single consistent future history which I'll call the Xeelee Universe. The Xeelee are a race of transcendent aliens who so far, at least stay offstage. Their mysterious workings are central to many stories, but they don't appear in person, so to speak. The Xeelee appear to be fighting a giant, losing battle against some unknown foe. The gist of this universe's future history is that Mankind eventually developed interstellar travel using an advanced drive that is nonetheless slower-than-light. We discovered that the Galaxy is full of other races, many more advanced than us, plus the Xeelee who go about their frequently-incomprehensible projects without taking notice of lesser races. In due course Humanity is conquered and throws off the conquerors, is conquered again, throws off the second conquerors, decides to do some conquering of its own, ultimately rises to challenge the Xeelee themselves for mastery of the universe and is beaten into a pulp.

TIME
This is one of those large ambitious science fiction novels whose scope includes life, the universe, and everything. The story is told in a series of short sections, each of which looks at what is happening from the standpoint of a particular character. There are quite a few of these, but the main participants are the curiously named entrepreneur Reid Malenfant (Bad Child?) and his ex-wife and personal assistant, Emma Stoney. Others include a semi-autistic mathematician, a mutant boy genius who is also semi-autistic, and Sheena, a squid who has been genetically modified to be super-intelligent to make her capable of piloting an extraterrestrial vehicle on a trip to an asteroid called Cruithne (which really exists). Various additional minor roles are played by assorted politicians, scientists, female military astronauts and others. Not only does the book contain a lot of characters, it also includes a number of cosmic themes, all of which, as we are told in an Afterword, are real. There is the probabilistic scenario called the Carter catastrophe, which says we are all doomed. There is the "Feynman radio" idea of using advanced electromagnetic waves to pick up messages from the future. There is the notion of a "quark nugget" of collapsed matter, with its potentially disastrous implications. And there is Lee Smolin's hypothesis of multiple evolving universes (see his Life of the Cosmos As the narrative unfolds we learn that our remote descendants have survived the Carter catastrophe but have found themselves, in the very far future, trapped in a dying universe that is approaching maximum entropy. They therefore find a way of reaching back into the remote past and altering the course of events, by giving rise to mutant super-intelligent children whose efforts lead to a creative destruction of the universe. This, Malenfant comes to understand in his dying moments, will result in the generation of uncountable further universes in which intelligent life can find expansion and fulfillment.

Stephen Baxter
Stephen Baxter (born in Liverpool, November 13, 1957) is a British hard science fiction author. He has degrees in mathematics and engineering. His writings fall into three main categories, each with a very different style and tone. His "Xeelee Sequence" stories are set in the far future, where human beings are rising to become the second most powerful race in the universe, next to the god-like Xeelee. Character development in these stories take second place to the depiction of advanced theories and ideas, such as the true nature of the Great Attractor, naked singularities and the great battle between Baryonic and Photonic lifeforms. Examples of novels written in this style: Ring Timelike Infinity His present-day Earth stories are much more human, with characters portrayed with greater depth and care. They typically indulge in "if only" whimsy or outright alternate history, dreaming about what humanity could achieve in the exploration of space. NASA features prominently, and a great deal of research has obviously been done into its internal structuring and methods. However, these novels have a much darker tone than any of his other stories and do not often portray much hope for humanity as a moral species. Examples of novels written in this style include

Stephen Baxter’s web page Stephen Baxter's top 5 books Stephen Baxter , one of Britain’s premier science fiction writers, came to Poland at the invitation of the British Council to launch the Imagine This project. As Vice President of the British Science Fiction Association and author of over 20 books (both on science fact and fiction), he was a perfect ambassador for the genre, and, in meetings with his readers over two days in Warsaw and Poznan, he spoke wittily and authoritatively on the subject. If you're new to science fiction then you can make a start with Stephen's own personal recommended titles from the last fifty years of British science fiction. In a speech made at the Imagine This launch party held at the British Council Warsaw, Stephen made reference to two of his personal heroes: Nicholas Copernicus and John Lennon. Both of them, he said, had had the genius to imagine something completely original and in this way they inspired him as a writer. ‘Science fiction is an exercise in imagination,’ he said. ‘It offers you a plausible future or a range of plausible futures, and when you explore these futures you look back and get a perspective on your place in the present.’ Earlier he had met several classes from the Teaching Centre and answered students’ questions about his life and work. He explained how his own lack of a second language had prevented him from going into space. ‘In 1990 the Russians were sending guest cosmonauts to the MIR space station and they advertised for a guest cosmonaut from Britain. So I applied. I was the right age, the right fitness. I had a science background. But I couldn’t speak a foreign language and so I got rejected.’ Stephen talked on a range of subjects: how he first became interested in science fiction, authors who have influenced him, collaborating with the legendary Arthur C. Clarke, and which of his own books is his favourite. You can read what he said by

Stephen Baxter
profile by Duncan Lawie
Stephen Baxter's origins fit our ideals of both an SF fan and an SF writer. As a child of the 1960s, he was turned on to SF by Gerry Anderson's TV shows. He grew up to study mathematics at Cambridge and completed a PhD in aeronautical engineering, before moving into teaching and industry. As a chartered engineer with an abiding interest in space, Baxter applied to join Mir as guest cosmonaut in 1989/90. Having the right kind of mathematics and engineering background helped, but the lack of a second language was to prove insurmountable. Instead, he was taken up by Interzone in its drive for a new radical hard-SF in the late 1980s.
The first story Baxter ever sold was The Xeelee Flower . This simple thread lead into the labyrinth of the Xeelee universe, a future-history that first took shape in Baxter's short story writing (subsequently gathered into Vacuum Diagrams , 1997). Another early piece was the short story that expanded into Baxter's first novel

We seem fascinated with stories of humanity's destruction and possible rebirth. Some express that fascination by moving to Montana with copious amounts of canned goods, but others go into space with author Stephen Baxter. Appropriately enough as we cross the psychological divide of a new millennium, two of Baxter's novels in particular Ring and Titan are interesting as variations of the oldest apocalyptic story, the Deluge. Final mission Titan (1997) is the closer of the two novels to the present day, and the smaller in scale. In the early 21st century, the Cassini probe has detected possible signs of life on Titan, but a space shuttle disaster has sapped the momentum of space exploration efforts.

At his best, Baxter can be thought-provoking and eerie, and can write stories you wish could go on longer; the worst here are the ones that were (to me) wilfully muddled and obscure, with only the loosest relationship to the majority of the others here. Cautiously recommended: if you like stories about alternate universes, nanotechnology, and ponderings on the Fermi Paradox . It really does make you wonder.

    Building New Worlds:
    Construction and Influences
    by Stephen Baxter
Many reviewers have pointed out the influence on much of my work of James Blish's classic hard sf tale "Surface Tension" (1952). Parallels with "Surface Tension" show up most strongly in those of my stories which might be described as "world-building," in the Hal Clement tradition. Some of my scenarios are seen as evocative of the pond-world of Blish's microscopic humans; some of my scenes are described as homages to Blish; and so on.
At first this perception startled me: sure, "Surface Tension" made a powerful imprint on me in my teenage years, and it remains one of my favourite pieces. But I wasn't aware, until it was pointed out by others, that its influence on my own work was quite so strong.
Of course, when constructing a new hard sf tale, I don't consciously set out to build in references to "Surface Tension," or anything else. My attention is on the development of an original science fiction idea, and how it is to be embedded in the structure of the story. But clearly my influences, "Surface Tension" among them, do play a part in the shaping of the material. And the reviewers' comments set me wondering how this happens. How do I go about creating a world-building tale? And at what level do my influences, including "Surface Tension," work on me?
"World-building" stories feature protagonists (humans or aliens) living in environments very different from our own. In general, the story is designed to display the features of that environment. And where I have written tales featuring humans suspended in a fluid of some kind, straightforward - if superficial - parallels with "Surface Tension" are, I guess, easy to draw.
