The Stephen Baxter Archive
Stephen Baxter is one of Britain's leading science fiction writers. Born in Liverpool in 1957, he first became interested in science fiction at school. Inspired to start writing his own stories, Baxter's early influences were Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, James Blish and Larry Niven. Stephen Baxter went on to study Mathematics at Cambridge, then took a PhD in Engineering at Southampton University. He initially pursued a career as a teacher of maths and physics, then worked for several years in information technology. Yet all the while he maintained an interest in writing, with his scientific background providing an ideal foundation for writing the hard-SF for which he has become renowned. Baxter made his publishing breakthrough in Interzone in 1987 with The Xeelee Flower and since then has published dozens of short stories and several novels, each with an emphasis on strong characterization, plausible science and imaginative story-telling. His writing has won many accolades, including the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, the Philip K. Dick Award and the British Science Fiction Association Award, most notably for

Stephen Baxter has just completed his book The Earls of Mercia: Lordship and Power in Late Anglo-Saxon England , forthcoming with Oxford University Press. This explores how one noble family negotiated the vicissitudes of English politics between the 990s and the 1070s, and considers how earls exercised power as agents of royal government, and through informal networks of land tenure, lordship and patronage. He is currently working on a sequel to this book, provisionally titled Power Structures and Political Patterns in the Reign of Edward the Confessor. He is also involved in a collaborative project to produce an edition of the Anglo-Saxon charters of the church of Worcester; he is a co-director of the Prosopography of Anglo-Saxon England (PASE) ; and is acting as the literary executor to the late Patrick Wormald.

09 November 2007 If you lend an ear to certain voices echoing around the wood-panelled dining club that is modern SF, you'll no doubt be aware that some people consider SF to be suffering from a lack of willingness to engage with the future. In fact, some familiar genre names have taken to writing about the present (Greg Bear, William Gibson , and Jon Courtenay Grimwood ) or the past (Neal Stephenson and James Morrow ) rather than carrying on the old genre tradition of dreaming up plausible futures. Charlie Stross even accused alternate history writers of engaging in "a mad collective ostrich-head burying exercise rather than engaging with the world as it is." What then are we to make of Stephen Baxter? Arguably the godfather of the contemporary hard SF scene, Baxter has spent his writing career relentlessly pursuing scientific and philosophical ideas of dizzying scope and complexity before wrestling them to the ground and presenting them to us for our amusement and delectation. But then Baxter turned his eyes to the past while writing 2003's Coalescent (volume one of the Destiny's Children series). This flirtation with Roman Britain (and King Arthur) seemingly inspired Baxter to explore the world of historical fiction again, thus his current

Christ Church, Oxford It is now forty years since Galbraith published the Making of Domesday Book. Since then his thesis has been refined in various ways, but there has been no serious challenge to his central propositions: that the object of the Domesday survey was to produce Domesday Book, and that the purpose of the whole enterprise must be inferred from Domesday Book itself. Dr Roffe's book develops a radical alternative thesis. This is by any standards a remarkable thesis. To read it is to feel as if the landscape of Domesday scholarship has been struck by a tidal wave: one feels compelled to return to that landscape to see how many of the familiar structures of Domesday historiography have been swept away, and whether some of them will remain standing when the water eventually recedes. What follows can be no more than a sketch of some initial reactions: some of Roffe's propositions are forceful and compelling, but others are much less persuasive. It would be possible to list the virtues of the book at greater length. Some of Roffe's propositions are of such great moment that they merit very careful consideration; his difficult but plainly important thesis on demesne geld exemption is a case in point. For these reasons, one might go so far as to describe the book as a gold mine of Domesday scholarship; but the corollary is that one must mine for the nuggets of gold that it contains. There are also some striking omissions and some very doubtful propositions.

Coalescent by Stephen Baxter
Once upon a time I offered to give an advance reading copy of Stephen Baxter's new novel, Exultant or Harry Turtledove's Homeward Bound to anyone who wanted to write a review of the book and its predecessor(s). Nobody took me up on the offer, exactly.
However, all is not lost. Stuart Carter let me know that he had written about both Exultant and Coalescent , the predecessor. Then Niall Harrison , who I'd secretly hoped had not gotten his hands on Exultant yet and would like to write about it, sent me a review of Coalescent . He didn't need my copy of the book (alas, since the whole point of the exercise was that I needed to get rid of some books), but I told him that if no-one else responded I'd be thrilled to use what he had written. In the meantime, he wrote about Exultant in a long and fascinating post about five recent space operas. Consequently, there's a lot of material about Exultant out there.

By Stephen Baxter Del Rey $24.00/$34.00 Canada Hardcover, Jan. 2000 ISBN 0-345-43075-1 Review by Curt Wohleber ndustrialist Reid Malenfant knows that Earth's limited resources can't support the human race indefinitely. Malenfant, who washed out of the astronaut corps years earlier, wants to mine asteroids, an enterprise that will pave the way for a new era of commerce and exploration, securing humanity's future in the cosmos. But a man named Cornelius Taine urges Malenfant to look at the really big picture: Not even the whole universe can sustain humanity forever. In the far future, Taine notes, "the stars will die. It is going to be cold and dark, a universe of shadows." Taine follows this bleak but remote notion with a bizarre hypothesisbased on a chain of logic that is neither provable nor refutablethat humanity is probably doomed to extinction not at the end of the universe, but within a few hundred years. What to do? Scan for neutrino messages sent back in time by humanity's descendants, who will explain how to survive this eerily amorphous "Carter catastrophe."
