Biographical Information
Frank L. Baum was born on May 15, 1856 in Chittennango, New York. His father was a barrel maker who became wealthy in the oil business. As young teen Baum started up several newspapers and a magazine. He soon became interested in theatre, and his father gave him several theatres and opera houses to manage. In 1881 he wrote his first play, The Maid of Arran In 1882 Frank married Maud Gage. They had several children together. In 1887 tragedy struck the family when Baum's father died. Frank moved his family to the Dakota Territory where much of Maud's family was. He opened a business, and when it went under took over the local newspaper. When the newspaper also fails, Frank moved the family once again to Chicago where he took two jobs; one as a reporter for The Saturday Evening Post , and one as a china salesman. On his trips he would make up stories to tell to his children when he returned home. In 1899 he became ill, and wrote a book with illustrator William Denslow. The book was called

Claim: A second-hand coat selected as part of the costume for Professor Marvel in the film vesion of The Wizard of Oz was later discovered to have been owned by Oz author L. Frank Baum.
Status: True.
Origins:
Actor Frank Morgan played five different roles in The Wizard of Oz: In the Emerald City, he was the cabby who drove the Horse-of-a-Different-Color, a guard at the entrance to the Wizard's palace, the doorkeeper at the Wizard's palace, and the Great and Powerful Oz himself; in the Kansas sequences that opened the film, Morgan portrayed the disreputable Professor Marvel.
Nearly all of the makeup and costume designs used in The Wizard of Oz went through numerous revisions and changes before during and Morgan's outfits were no exception. Since the portions of the film in which Morgan appeared (the Emerald City and Kansas sequences) were the last to be filmed, there was even more time to fiddle with the outfits worn by his various characters. Although Morgan did not make his first appearance before the cameras until 14 January 1939, he posed for makeup/costume test shots of all of his characters in

L. Frank Baum's La Jolla: Halfway to Oz
by Bard C. Cosman

By far the most popular children's writer of the early twentieth century was L. Frank Baum, creator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Oz series. In Baum's books The Sea Fairies Sky Island , and The Scarecrow of Oz , the young heroine Trot starts her adventures from a home place that has physical beauty, variety, and mystery. This is in contrast to the rest of the Oz series, in which the child protagonist escapes to an exciting and beautiful fairyland from a prosaic or austere home setting, exemplified by Dorothy Gale's Kansas. Trot's home is in La Jolla, which Baum visited in 1904-5, when he began wintering at Coronado. Baum's impressions of La Jolla as a magical place are understandable in light of his previous experience and both echo and enhance a popular stereotype of Southern California as an earthly paradise. Gateways to Oz L. Frank Baum's Oz stories follow a pattern in which a child hero sets out, often accidentally, for an adventure in fairyland from a starting place that is dull or blighted. Dorothy Gale's Kansas, in the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz , is the model: W.W. Denslow drew its severe, monotonous landscape in gray, in contrast to his color pictures of Oz

The Wounded Knee editorial
Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer , January 3, 1891) Ten years before he wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , L. Frank Baum published an obscure weekly newspaper, the Saturday Pioneer , in Aberdeen, S.D. The Saturday Pioneer was a mix of boilerplate features and news stories, local society news, humor and arts columns, and editorials about the issues of the day. During Baum's tenure at the paper (from January 1890 to March 1891), the chief issues about which he editorialized were the 1890 elections and the question of which city, Pierre or Huron, would be made the capital of the new state of South Dakota.
1890 was also the year of one of the darkest passages in the troubled history of relations between Native Americans and the expanding white population. On the afternoon of December 28, 1890, units of the U.S. Seventh Cavalry captured a group of Minneconjou Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee Creek in southwestern South Dakota. The next day, as the Indians surrendered their weapons, a shot rang out and the cavalry opened fire. At least 153 of the Sioux were killed (some estimate nearly 300, out of a band of about 350) most of them women, children, and unarmed men. (These figures reflect the account of the massacre given in Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (New York: Henry Holt, 1970, pp. 439-45.)

Baum, L. Frank Biography
Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) American journalist and writer, whose best-known book is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Baum's stories about the imaginary Land of Oz belong to the classics of fantasy literature. The Oz series was long shunned by librarians, and neglected by scholars of children's literature. Baum has often been compared to Lewis Carroll - they both had a girl as the protagonist in their most famous works. "Yet the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as 'historical' in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer 'wonder tales' in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf, and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curling incident devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder-tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident." (Baum in the introduction to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Lyman Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York. His father was the oil magnate Benjamin Ward Baum and mother Cynthia (Stanton) Baum, a women's rights activist. Baum grew up with his seven brothers and sisters on a large estate just north of Syracuse. "The cool but sun-kissed mansion... was built in a quaint yet pretty fashion, with many wings and gables and broad verandas on every side," Baum later wrote in DOT AND TOT IN FAIRYLAND (1901). The house, although it was large, did not have running water.
