Matsuo Basho
Basho, the Japanese poet and diarist, was born in Iga-ueno near Kyoto in 1644. He spent his youth as companion to the son of the local lord, and with him he studied the writing of seventeen-syllable verse. In 1667 he moved to Edo (now Tokyo) where he continued to write verse. He eventually became a recluse, living on the outskirts of Edo in a hut. When he traveled he relied entirely on the hospitality of temples and fellow-poets. In his writings he was strongly influenced by the Zen sect of Buddhism. Send this page to a friend

Classic Haiku by basho. From the Journal Haiku Spirit.
http://www.dublinwriters.org/haiku/basho.html
Basho Spring rain
conveyed under the trees
in drops. A green willow,
dripping down into the mud,
at low tide. By the old temple,
peach blossoms;
a man treading rice. With every gust of wind,
the butterfly changes its place
on the willow. All the day long-
yet not long enough for the skylark,
singing, singing. The old pond: a frog jumps in,- the sound of water. Husking rice,  a child squints up  to view the moon.  Cedar umbrellas, off  to Mount Yoshimo for  the cherry blossoms. Octopus traps -  summer’s moonspun dreams,  soon ended.  Winter downpour -  even the monkey  needs a raincoat.  Year’s end, all  corners of this  floating world, swept.

Downtown News Main
The Place to Go January 13, 2006
With inspiration from world famous chef, downtown dining just got a little more cosmopolitan Basho Japanese fusion restaurant and lounge is an example of how the restaurant scene in St. John’s is growing and diversifying. With food inspired by world famous chef Nobu Matsuhisa (renowned for creating simple fusions of Japanese cuisine, inspired by ethnic influences), a modern, genuine Japanese décor and the option of experiencing fine dining or a casual lounge setting complete with contemporary music, Basho would be equally at home in Tokyo, New York or London. Tak Ishiwata, the owner of Basho (which means place in Japanese), was born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador after his parents moved from Tokyo just over 30 years ago. Just as his restaurant changes the face of downtown St. John’s dining when it opened its doors on Duckworth Street in mid-December, Ishiwata was also challenged with the changing face of what was once Nageira’s restaurant (downstairs) and Finnegan’s Wake pub (upstairs). “It was hard to envision because the inside interior décor had an old-style Irish tavern sort of look to it and it looked very cramped and small,” Ishiwata tells The Independent, “but once we put my concept in the place it looked; it’s almost too big right now. I mean it seats 100 people.”

Bashō's supposed birthplace in Iga Province Bashō was born Matsuo Kinsaku Matsuo Kinsaku in roughly 1644, somewhere near Ueno in Iga Province . His father may have been a low-ranking samurai, which would have promised Bashō a career in the military but not much chance of a notable life. However, in his childhood Bashō became a servant to Tōdō Yoshitada Tōdō Yoshitada , who shared with Bashō a love for haikai , a sort of cooperative poetry composition. The sequences were opened with a verse in the 5-7-5 mora format; this verse was named a hokku , and would later be renamed haiku when presented as standalone works. The
