Hon-basho Daily Comments Senshuraku Comments (Clancy Kelly reporting)
Wella, wella, wella, my little droogs, Day 15 has come and...ah, to hell with this crap. You know, it may be a less well known fact, but foreign names ALSO have meanings, and so in honor of Bernie "Musk Dervish Knut's Barn" McManus, I am today going to translate the names of some of the other contributors on Sumotalk However, unlike Bernie's, my translations are the only proper ones and cannot be contested.
So I had a stiffy. How could one NOT have a stiffy, with the lineup senshuraku presented this basho. Sure, one could lack a Y chromosome, but that would simply mean two stiffies, wouldn't it? A few big battles for crucial eighth wins (with heartrending subplots to boot!), a huge showdown between two future Yokozuna, the Khan fighting for pride against the Great Japanese Hope, Circa 2006, and much of it figuring in the race for the tourney title.
After the second of the three battles for win number eight, my stiffy retreated to a gummy. After Hakuho laid Kotooshu out flat, my Gumby rallied to become a Woodrow, in anticipation of the final bout. And just after the Yokozuna meekly fell to his fourth loss, my wife called out: "Dinner!" Menu? Udon.
We've been hearing the term "conspiracy" tossed around concerning the Sumo Kyokai, and I have come to the firm conclusion that there is, indeed, a conspiracy. After watching replay upon replay, the evidence is indisputable: The Sumo Kyokai is asking young, sumo-clueless hotties to sit up front on the final three days of the basho. How do I know they are plants? They never look at or talk to the people next to them, people who are seated in the same box! How do I know they are clueless? They use cell phones while the wrestlers are warming up and they don't laugh at Takamisakari's antics. How do I know they are hotties? Anal flutters.

http://www.stonebridge.com/BASHONARROW/basho.html
Matsuo Basho (1644-94) is considered Japan's greatest haiku poet. Narrow Road to the Interior (Oku no Hosomichi) is his masterpiece. Ostensibly a chronological account of the poet's five-month journey in 1689 into the deep country north and west of the old capital, Edo, the work is in fact artful and carefully sculpted, rich in literary and Zen allusion and filled with great insights and vital rhythms. In Basho's Narrow Road: Spring and Autumn Passages , poet and translator Hiroaki Sato presents the complete work in English and examines the threads of history, geography, philosophy, and literature that are woven into Basho's exposition. He details in particular the extent to which Basho relied on the community of writers with whom he traveled and joined in linked verse (renga) poetry sessions, an example of which, A Farewell Gift to Sora , is included in this volume. In explaining how and why Basho made the literary choices he did, Sato shows how the poet was able to transform his passing observations into words that resonate across time and culture. Hiroaki Sato has published over two dozen books, of which seventeen are translations of Japanese poetry into English.

BASHO
basho haiku . He composed stanzas of haikai no renga (a sequence of linked verses, usually by a group of poets), whose opening, and most important, stanza ( hokku ) was later separated as the verse form haiku. A master of hokku and the integration of verses in a sequence, Basho imbued what was a social pastime with the spirit of Zen , creating a serious literary form capable of profound artistic expression. His poetry is noted for its sensitive exploration of nature of beauty, loneliness, suffering, and death. His later years were marked by several long and arduous journeys that provided the basis for his famous travel accounts. The Oku no hosomichi See M. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain. Largely through the efforts of Masaoka Shiki, this independence was formally established in the 1890s through the creation of the term haiku.

    Basho
Matsuo Basho is buried at the Temple at Otsu, Shiga, Japan. He was born in Iga-ueno near Kyoto in 1644 and at a early age entered the service of the samurai Todo Yoshitada. During this time he began to write poetry and in particular hokku or haiku - miniature poems comprising of seventeen syllables. After Yoshitada's death in 1666 it is likely that Basho moved to Kyoto. By 1672 he had he moved to Edo (modern day Tokyo) where he continued to pursue his writing and also taught haiku and judged haiku competitions. It was here that he had the first of his three huts in a remote location near the Sumida River. Basho's original name was Matsuo Kinsaku but he changed it to 'Basho' - after he was presented with a wide leafed banana tree (or basho tree) by one of his disciples. Although the tree is rare in Japan and the climate too cold for it to bear fruit, Basho liked it because of its large, soft leaves. The basho tree appeared frequently in his work:

    Basho's "Here and Now"
Western writings on haiku freqentry assert that in Basho's view a haiku is what is happening here and now. But Basho wrote no discource on the principles of haiku and his works contain few traces of theory that we can draw upon to reconstruct his concepts. I have asked for help from colleagues who are spacialists in the literature of Edo Period (1600-1868; Matsuo Basho lived from 1644 to 1694), but none has found a clear statement of "here and now" principle. In my opinion this principle was established long before Basho. It seems to have been regarded as fundamental when haiku were still called haikai. Certainly every one of Basho's haiku testifies to the principle, though he never enunciated it. Mukai Kyorai (1651-1704) was one of the ten major disciples of Basho. His Kyoraisyo is considered the most important work dealing with the principles of haiku in Basho's time, but I cannot find anything in it that bears directly on this topic. Kagami Shiko was another of Basho's ten most important disciples. A chapter called "Sonentei yo-banashi" in his Fukuro-nikki reports a discussion about haiku by Kyorai in which he stated that haiku are concerned with "what is spontaneous on the spot." Shiko added that Basho praised that statement. As a peripheral note, I mention a story about Basho found on page 285, volume IX of the complete works of Basho published by Kadokawa Shoten, (1967):

Basho, however, acquired a taste for literature, perhaps from the son of the local lord, whose service he joined. He learned the craft of poetry from Kigin, a prominent Kyoto poet, and early in his life was exposed to two lasting influences: Chinese poetry and the tenets of Taoism. After his master died, Basho began spending time in Kyoto, practicing a form called haikai, consisting of linked verses.

In his late 20s Basho moved to Edo (now old Tokyo), a newly established city in great social flux, with a fast-growing population, robust trade, and, for Basho, literary opportunity. Within a few years he had gathered the coterie of students and patrons who formed what came to be known as the Basho School.
In 1680 one of his students built the poet a small house near the River Sumida, and soon after, when another presented him with a stock of
