If we keep an open mind, too much is likely to fall into it. The advantage of love at first sight is that it delays a second sight. Novels are longer than life. Fatalism is the lazy man's way of accepting the evitable.

Natalie Clifford Barney

Audrey Regan
Time engraves our faces with all the tears we have not shed. Natalie Clifford Barney T here are no photographs of Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald chatting above the voice of a perfumed chanteuse, in the parlor of Natalie's salon. No pictures of Greta Garbo strolling in Natalie's garden after a soft Paris rain. It would be a Friday night. They all gathered at Natalie's on Friday nights. And they've taken their secrets and anecdotes to their graves, leaving us to call up mental images of the madcap schemes and licentious escapades that occurred between 1910 and 1970, in the rooms and by-rooms at 20, rue Jacob, the most famous of all the literary salons in Paris. S omewhere between a cathedral and a bordello is how it has been described. I f we know anything for certain, it's that Natalie Clifford Barney was a piece of work. C onsider her mother, Alice Pike Barney, married to a wealthy conservative, yet famous in her own right, as a painter and fringe Bohemian - the wife with interesting hobbies - not the least of which was her smart little daughter, Natalie, a child who knew by age twelve that it was women, not men, who would accompany her through life. Alice Pike Barney, feeling her own restraints in life, may have passed the torch of independence to her daughter, when daddy wasn't watching.

English Dictionary allmath.com math for students travel deals hotel rooms biography classifications major works cross references biography name: Barney, Natalie Clifford sex: female lived: biography: Hostess and writer, born in Dayton, Ohio, USA. Born into a wealthy family (her grandfather made railroad cars), she was educated at a French boarding school, becoming completely bilingual. She finished her schooling at a private school for girls in New York City (1894), then was introduced into society in Washington, DC. Her beauty, wealth, artistic talents, and personal charm led to several engagements but, finding herself attracted to her own sex, she went to Paris in 1898. She soon became one of the most notable lesbians of her time, and while she wrote poetry, plays, fiction, and epigrams, she was mostly admired for the support she gave to other women writers and for her various love affairs with women. Her international salon at her home on rue Jacob attracted the cultivated and artistic from several lands for some 60 years and inspired much of her own writing. Remy de Goncourt addressed his Souvenirs indiscrets (1960) and Traits et portraits (1963), provide an invaluable testimony to the world she inhabited.

(She was a friend of men and the lover of women.)
Natalie Barney The Sun Also Rises
Writers and artists expatriated from America for many reasons, but once in Paris they were free to create some of the finest American literature to date. The Lost Generation led the way in expression of the themes of spiritual alienation, self-exile and cultural criticism, and their literary innovations challenged traditional assumptions about writing and expression.
What may be less known to most readers and admirers of this movement is that on the Left Bank of Paris there existed a community of women writers, journalists and playwrights who were just as influential to the Modernist movement. These women challenged the political and cultural conditions of the Paris setting, and their energy and intelligence nurtured the development of Modernism.
From the turn of the century to the twenties, although both men and women appeared to share a common reason for expatriating - they wanted to escape America and find in Europe a cultural, sexual and personal freedom to explore their cultural intuitions - they left for different reasons.
The reasons for women expatriation were particularly female reasons, and call into question the myths and clichés of Paris, which became enshrined in the popular imagination. The unrelenting cultural fascination with "the Paris of the Twenties" ignores the fact that many expatriate women arrived long before the Twenties and stayed long after the decade ended. For women, Paris was an altogether different city from that which their male counterparts experienced.

Ville de Paris, Musée de Petit Palais, Paris Natalie Barney was born in Dayton, Ohio to Albert Clifford Barney and Alice Pike Barney. Both parents came from extraordinary wealth and provided Natalie with every possible advantage. Like most young women in her class in the height of Victorian Imperialism, she was haphazardly educated and encouraged to promote her personal charms in the pursuit of a suitable husband. Extremely independent in her ideas, Natalie questioned such convention and proceeded to live her life in accordance with her beliefs. Her pursuits included French culture, French literature, Greek literature and romancing women. Of these enterprises, her quest for women has been the most notorious. Her endeavers in French and Greek influenced her earliest writings: Quelques portraits-sonnets de femmes, Cinq petits dialogues grecs. These works focused on the idealization of Pre-Raphaelite feminine beauty and romantic love between women. `Natalie, my husband kisses your hands, and I the rest.' - Collette, in a note to Natalie.
