Barney, Natalie Clifford (1876-1972) In addition to being the muse and inspiration of other writers, American expatriate Natalie Clifford Barney, known as the Amazon, was a poet, memoirist and epigrammatist in her own right. Barney was born in Dayton, Ohio, on October 31, 1876; she grew up in Cincinnati and Washington, D.C. Her father, Albert Clifford Barney, inherited a railroad fortune, and when the family lived in Washington, Natalie moved in the highest social and diplomatic circles. The rigid protocol of high society bored her, however, and she was eager to pursue her own adventures in an atmosphere more conducive to sexual, and especially lesbian, expression. As a child, she had visited Europe many times, and when she was twenty-four she settled permanently in Paris. Sponsor Message.

Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972)
Natalie Barney was born in Dayton, Ohio to Albert Clifford Barney and Alice Pike Barney . Both parents came from extraordinary wealth and provided Natalie with every possible advantage. Like most young women in her class in the height of Victorian Imperialism, she was haphazardly educated and encouraged to promote her personal charms in the pursuit of a suitable husband. Extremely independent in her ideas, Natalie questioned such convention and proceeded to live her life in accordance with her beliefs. Her pursuits included French culture, French literature, Greek literature and romancing women. Of these enterprises, her quest for women has been the most notorious. Her endeavers in French and Greek influenced her earliest writings: Quelques portraits-sonnets de femmes, Cinq petits dialogues grecs These works focused on the idealization of Pre-Raphaelite feminine beauty and romantic love between women. Her most acclaimed works, Pensees d'une amazone, Traits et portraits

US hostess and writer. Barney was one of the most notable lesbians of her time, and while she wrote poetry, plays, fiction, and epigrams, much of her fame was a consequence of the support she gave to other women writers and the various love affairs she conducted. Abstract:
On June 20, 1918, Natalie Clifford Barney stipulated a marriage contract with her life companion, love, and partner: Elisabeth de Gramont, Duchess of Clermont-Tonnerre. This document and the correspondence exchanged between Barney and the Duchess (the first letter was sent in 1909 when the two women met for the first time; the last, a few days before Elisabeth de Gramont's death in 1954) explain without any doubt the secondary position of Romaine Brooks within her relationship with Natalie Barney: Brooks was only the substitute when Gramont was not near by. This contract was respected until the end of Elisabeth de Gramont's life.
