Biography
Author of an array of brilliantly diverse novels and a plethora of first-rate journalism, Julian Barnes has garnered international acclaim for his ingenious and wickedly clever works. A writer who likes to take risks, he delivers unpredictable, witty, and inventive prose. Barnes is best known for his unconventional novel Flaubert's Parrot (1984, shortlisted for the Booker Prize), which challenges categorization by being part fiction, part literary criticism, and part biography. From Cross Channel (1996), his whimsical collection of short stories, to the harrowing and satirical novel The History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters (1989), Barnes's writing is filled with clever and perceptive observations. He notes,"Some people don't like finding ideas in a novel. They react as if they've found a toothpick in a sandwich."
Born in 1946 in Leicester, Barnes was raised in a highly ordered and suburban environment. Both his parents were schoolteachers. He studied Russian and French at school, and later followed his brilliant brother to Oxford. He was prepared to become a barrister: "I took all the exams, but I was getting more pleasure out of doing a round-up of four novels for a provincial paper than I was out of preparing what I might say defending some criminal." Barnes also held a job as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary, where, he notes, "because I was young and male and quite a lot of the other staff were female and middle-aged, I tended to get the rude words and sports words." After a brief period working as a columnist for a literary magazine, Barnes became deputy literary editor to Martin Amis at the

Book Review: by Julian Barnes
Written by W.E. Wallo Published February 14, 2006 See also: Book Review: Nightlife by Thomas Perry Book Review: ... by Sam Seder and Stephen Sherrill In this compelling, lovingly crafted novel, Julian Barnes offers up a scintillating soufflé of fact and fiction as he retells the parallel lives of Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, and George Edalji, a young solicitor wrongly imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. The book, which came out last year in England, was on the short list for the Booker Prize. Barnes himself has received significant critical praise for his writings, and it is well-deserved. In , he is clearly at the top of his game. On the surface, Doyle and Edalji were little alike. Doyle was born into genteel impoverishment; his father succumbed to alcoholism and left the family with little. Doyle largely idolized his mother, who indoctrinated him in the mythic tales of another ancient Briton who shared the boy's name. After being schooled by the Jesuits, Doyle studied medicine at Edinburgh University and found an outlet for his boundless athletic enthusiasm in activities such as cricket, boxing, and football. Meanwhile, Edalji is the son of an Indian immigrant and his Scottish wife; Edalji's father is a parish priest in Great Wyrley, where Edalji is raised as an often ostracized outsider. Quiet and sedentary, Edalji is often regarded with distrust by some of the locals, especially some of the local constabulary.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Understanding Julian Barnes surveys the career of an English writer best known as a strikingly innovative novelist. In this analysis of Barnes's distinctive qualities and of his place in England's literary establishment, Merritt Moseley suggests that Barnes's greatest achievement is his ability to resist summary and categorization by imagining each book in a dramatically original way. Evaluating the whole of Barnes's oeuvre, Moseley discusses the novelist's admiration for Gustave Flaubert, identifies his technical and thematic concerns, and explores the intrigue surrounding his divided career as a writer of serious novels, published under his own name, and of detective thrillers, published under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh. Moseley provides close readings of Barnes's book-length works, defending the writer against the charge that some of these volumes should not be considered novels at all and examining his commitment to writing books rich in the exploration of serious ideas.

Julian Barnes on Philip Roth's "The Counterlife"
Several years ago I talked to Julian Barnes upon the publication of his Booker Prize shortlisted novel, During the interview we began discussing Philip Roth's books, and Barnes mentioned "The Counterlife" was his favorite among them.
With this week's In Retrospect series focusing on "The Counterlife" winner of the NBCC award for fiction in 1987 I thought it'd be good to go back to Barnes and ask him a few more questions about the novel. Here is what he had to say.
Q: Why do you admire “The Counterlife?” Is Roth doing something different in this book than he does in his other fiction?
In 'The Counterlife' he raised the stakes for himself as a novelist. He took on bigger material - Nathan Zuckerman no longer provokes and betrays just the Jews of New Jersey, Nathan Zuckerman provokes and betrays the entire state of Israel! - and he was much more formally audacious than he had been before. I still think it's his finest novel - though that's a tough call.
Q: A significant part of this book takes place in London. Do you think Roth gets it right on the page?
