Clive Barker (Main Gallery)
Since the mid-eighties, Clive Barker has concocted intricate, dark fantasy worlds in film and fiction. One of his first novels became the cult horror classic, Hellraiser, adapted and directed by Barker himself. His most recent publication, the hauntingly, self-reflexive Mister B. Gone (2007), suggests to the reader that the book he holds in his hands is possessed. In the early nineties, Barker began expressing his vicious visions in the medium of painting, a selection of which are on view at Packer-Schopf gallery. Like his movies and books, Barker's paintings investigate reality, sexuality, and morality. Dancing across paper and canvas, one will find monsters and martyrs in all degrees of pain and pleasure, some of them howling like Edward Munch's The Scream. The largest canvases describe ominous, anthropomorphic landscapes with solitary mountains, cathedrals in flames, and black moons.
It is this directness and intensity of emotion that connects Barker to those artistic traditions that favored the personal, the irrational, and the fantastical. In his paintings, we can find traces of the mystical, solitary moments portrayed in works of Romanticism. We can sense a return to the exploration of dreams and neuroses that was the project of Symbolism and Surrealism. And we can feel the deep emotional angst that characterizes Expressionism. Indeed, Barker cites Goya's monsters, William Blake's visions of heaven and hell, and all "fantastical painters, painters who used paint to express extremes of emotion" as key inspirations. Blake figured the devil as having both creative and destructive potential, a paradox that pervades Barker's personal universe, where lines are not drawn between heaven and hell, pleasure and pain. Barker reflects that he seeks "a more complex vision of religion than the simple 'good and bad.'"

Stephen King once wrote, "I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker." This was based mainly on Clive's literary works at the time. However, I do think that he has done an outstanding job on certain occasions in translating his literary vision onto the silver screen. Let me clarify this, not everything Clive has had his name attached is great. This is quite evident in the last two Hellraisers. But the emphasis of my previous statement is on "attach", because that is all he did with these films. As for the rest of his films, I loved "Hellraiser 1 and 2", "Nightbreed" and the original "Candyman". All are excellent illustrations of what Stephen King was speaking about. On the middle ground stand two of Clive's more recent film endeavors "Lord of Illusions" and "Candyman 2: Farewell to the Flesh". The first one (LOI) could have been a lot better. I was a big fan of Scott Bakula because of "Quantum Leap" (one of my all-time favorite TV shows) and I though this could have been his big break. The movie was alright, but I think Clive wanted to do too much with it. Still I recommend it to all. The second film, "Candyman 2", shouldn't have been made. Sure Candyman was a cool character, but I don't think he should be categorized like other "slashers". His killing isn't as revenge driven as

Halloween Special: "The Incompletely Complete Clive Barker Filmography!" or "Deconstructing Heroes, part 1" The Halloween season is upon us. A time of masks and monsters, parties and That said, we're going to go the low brow route and start with a look at Clive Barker himself. That's right. I'm going to be very, very shallow and point out how weird it is to know that Clive Barker wore big 80's sunglasses and had a poofy almost-mullet while he was signing copies of Weaveworld. Don't believe me? Nothing says "I'm trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator" like bringing an artist's appearance into the fray. That said, I think Clive Barker's appearance IS something worth talking about. You see, when Clive Barker first made his "mainstream" debut, he sported a, er, look very different from what he goes by now. Part of it is simply the fact that he's growing older (he's over 50, now) and another part of it is that he's started putting pictures of himself as a big gay pirate on his book covers. I'm not kidding, but I am getting ahead of myself. Here's a "classic" Clive Barker picture that's a pretty good example of the image Clive presented on the back of all his books: Pretty standard for a horror cover, right? (I particularly dig the tiny demon on his shirt for some reason.) Clive Barker's not a bad looking guy, and most of his old covers featured him glaring at you with his piercing eyes. Many of them had photos of him wandering dramatically through graveyards or something akin to that. But in one of his latest books, the photo on the back is....different.

Regular readers will by now be well aware of my excitement over Codemasters' upcoming collaboration with author, film maker, artist, and all-round creative legend Clive Barker. I've been a huge fan of Barker's work since my teens, and the prospect of the creator of Pinhead and Daniel Robetaille taking creative control of an ultra-violent, nightmarish FPS has had me spun into a feverish, gore-hound tizzy ever since it was announced.
I've already had a short hands-on earlier this year , and took away with me some very promising early impressions. On Friday though, I journeyed over to Codies' studios for a full afternoon of demonic splatter with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, and was able to get a much more concrete feel for it. So how was it? Was my early enthusiasm well-founded, or is Jericho another sad case of big-name talent being wasted on an unworthy product? As ever, the answers are after the jump.

When I previewed Clive Barker's Jericho back in August, my main concern wasn't that the game seemed like another ‘me too' shooter (it didn't) or that the game lacked promise (it had bags of it). No, my biggest worry was whether, in what was already looking like the best year we've had for 3D shooters in a long time, it had a chance of standing out. Could it live up to its potential, or would it fall short of the mark and flat on its face?
Having played the final product, the answer is less straightforward than I expected. In some respects, Jericho exceeds my first impressions. In others, it's a much worse game than I feared. There are real signs here of innovative thinking and artistic and technical skill, but there's also plenty of evidence of sloppy design, poor execution and clichéd or merely generic work. In a way, this actually makes me sadder than I'd be if Jericho was just your average damp squib.
If you read the preview, you'll already know that the game is a squad-based shooter, but with the usual military guff exchanged for a dark, gory horror theme. The seven-strong Jericho squad - a secret military unit made up of warriors with psychic powers - is sent on a mission to close a dimensional rift before a horrific elder entity can be unleashed upon humanity. The rift is enclosed in what the characters describe as ‘the box'; a sort of trans-dimensional prison that protects it. The rift has actually opened several times during the lifetime of humanity, and each time it has dragged a warped version of the local architecture and population into the box. Hence, the Jericho squad's journey falls into four themed acts, covering Barker-fied versions of World War II, the Crusades, Roman and Sumerian settings.
