8. Iain M. Banks: A Few Notes On The Culture
iain M banks. Html markup by Stefan Kruger. Firstly, and most importantly the Culture doesn t really exist. It s only a story.
http://www.cs.bris.ac.uk/~stefan/culture.html
A Few Notes on the Culture by Iain M Banks [Html mark-up by Stefan Kruger] Firstly, and most importantly: the Culture doesn't really exist. It's only a story. It only exists in my mind and the minds of the people who've read about it. That having been made clear: The Culture is a group-civilisation formed from seven or eight humanoid species, space-living elements of which established a loose federation approximately nine thousand years ago. The ships and habitats which formed the original alliance required each others' support to pursue and maintain their independence from the political power structures - principally those of mature nation-states and autonomous commercial concerns - they had evolved from. The galaxy (our galaxy) in the Culture stories is a place long lived-in, and scattered with a variety of life-forms. In its vast and complicated history it has seen waves of empires, federations, colonisations, die-backs, wars, species-specific dark ages, renaissances, periods of mega-structure building and destruction, and whole ages of benign indifference and malign neglect. At the time of the Culture stories, there are perhaps a few dozen major space-faring civilisations, hundreds of minor ones, tens of thousands of species who might develop space-travel, and an uncountable number who have been there, done that, and have either gone into locatable but insular retreats to contemplate who-knows-what, or disappeared from the normal universe altogether to cultivate lives even less comprehensible.

However, it was his 1987 novel CONSIDER PHLEBAS which introduced his remarkable talent to the SF community, and also saw the addition of the 'M' to his name - an addition which remains a distinguishing feature of his SF work. He has since written a further 5 SF novels, and a collection of SF short stories, THE STATE OF THE ART, all published by Orbit. Described by William Gibson as 'a phenomenon ... wildly successful, fearlessly creative', he was acknowledged as one of the Best of Young British Writers in 1993, and lives in Fife, Scotland. Matter Extract
We’re thrilled to post the prologue of Iain M. Banks’ Matter , the first Culture novel since Look to Windward (2000) Orbit will publish Matter in both the UK and the US this February. Enjoy!
Prologue
Turminder Xuss (drone, offensive) watched the woman Djan Seriy Anaplian for a few minutes, monitoring her slowing breathing and her gradually relaxing muscle-state until it knew she was genuinely asleep. It checked round its half-dozen previously deployed scout and secondary knife missiles, using their sensors to watch the still distant approaching army draw slowly closer and monitoring the various small patrols and individual scouts the army had sent out ahead of it. About half an hour later, when the front of the army was hazily visible on the desert highway a couple of kilometres to the west, a single mounted scout came riding along the top of the ridge, straight towards where the drone kept vigil and the woman slept. The man showed no sign of having seen through the camouflage field surrounding their little encampment, but unless he changed course he was going to ride right into them. The drone made a tutting noise very similar to the one the woman had made earlier and told its nearest knife missile to spook the mount. The pencil-thin shape came darting in, effectively invisible, and jabbed the beast in one flank so that it screamed and jerked, nearly unseating its rider as it veered away down the shallow slope of ridge towards the road.

Consider Phlebas (new UK cover)
Illustrator Mark Salwowski.
Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks was first published in 1987. The following is a description of the Vavatch Orbital (a mini-ringworld) taken from the book: "Vavatch lay in space like a god's bracelet. The fourteen-million kilometre hoop glittered and sparkled, blue and gold against the jet black gulf of space beyond. As the Clear Air Turbulence warped in towards the Orbital, most of the Company watched their goal approach on the main screen in the mess. The aquamarine sea, which covered most of the surface of the artefact's ultradense base material, was spattered with white puffs of cloud, collected in huge storm systems or vast banks, some of which seemed to stretch right across the full thirty-five-thousand-kilometre breadth of the slowly turning Orbital. Only on one side of that looped band of water was there any land visible, hard up against one sloped retaining wall of pure crystal. Although, from the distance they were watching, the sliver of land looked like a tiny brown thread lying on the edge of a great rolled-out bolt of vivid blue, that thread was anything up to two thousand kilometres across; there was no shortage of land on Vavatch."
In a later section of the book there is the following line: "They were still flying over the Circlesea towards land when the Culture blew the whole Orbital into a fourteen-million-kilometre halo of light and dust..."

REFERENCES COLUMNS Science Fiction I suppose that everyone has gaps in their reading, authors they'd love to have read but have not yet got round to. I grew tired of science fiction in the 1980's and didn't really return to the genre with any enthusiasm until the late 1990's. The authors who first really caught my eye Alastair Reynolds and Peter F. Hamilton with their great cranking space operas both mentioned Iain M. Banks as a primal influence. But by that time, Banks' Culture series was well under way. Though I bought the first couple of entries, both as trade paperbacks and even, more recently, in a first edition hardcover, I never got round to actually reading the work of the writer who cast such a large shadow on my new favorites. Thanks then to Iain M. Banks himself, who neatly solves the problem for me and others like me with his most recent novel, 'The Algebraist'. Finally I get to see what all the fuss is about. In a word (or two): great writing. Banks brings a huge imagination, vivid scenarios, head-spinning speculations, fascinating scientific information, in other words all the expected bits. But it's the unexpected that we really expect in a novel like this. That frisson of surprise, the shock of the new. What could be shocking in space opera, the genre that has everything in the universe? Sex? Nah, zero-g and inter-species, it's been done and overdone. Violence? Heck, George Lucas blew up planets nearly thirty years ago. It was a yawner then, it's more so now.

A little culture Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Banks leads something of a double life. Under the name Iain M. Banks he writes the best science fiction I've read in the last few years, while under the name Iain Banks he writes more general fiction. I hesitate to call his general work mainstream, as it's generally filled with the bizarre and perverse. I've read several of his "Iain Banks", not all of which have been to my taste. However, I've enjoyed the work of Iain M. Banks considerably. Most of Banks' science fiction takes place in the context of the Culture, an ancient space-faring civilization based on equality, non-violence, abundant robotic labor, super-intelligent artificial minds, and a desire to have as much fun as possible. The Culture must sometimes deal with other civilizations, however, and this task is given to the Culture's Contact group (Normal members of the Culture find Contact rather distasteful). And then, for those special, more dangerous contacts, there is Contact's Special Circumstances section.... The Culture novels include Excession The Player of Games Consider Phlebas Use of Weapons , and The State of the Art The Player of Games is a good starting point, as is

Iain M. Banks' The Algebraist
Iain Banks drinks from the same spring of maniacal invention as Neal Stephenson, and swims in the same kind of infinite fountain of words. But he relegates nano to almost nothing in this major SF novel from 2005. Nano plays the role of some crappy surveillance dust that is found out in time for Fassin our lead to save himself. Let's just say that nano is NOT a "general-purpose technology."
The Algebraist's system is extremely advanced, but the extremely small has a walk-on as a variable component in an agent of control.
There are all sorts of great things about this book, which sometime you absolutely must read! Among others, there are elements of a theory of technology:
1. the most powerful is the most embedded. The species that has the highest-tech has also integrated it so completely into its cultural systems that it is most of the time literally invisible.
