Jump to: navigation search Nicholson Baker (born January 7 ) is a contemporary American novelist, whose writings focus on minute inspection of the narrator's stream of thought . His unconventional novels deal with topics like voyeurism and planned assassination , but generally de-emphasize traditional aspects of plot . Baker's enthusiasts appreciate his ability to candidly explore the human psyche, while critics feel that his writing wastes time on trivia ( Stephen King notoriously compared Baker's novel Vox to a "meaningless little fingernail paring")

N Have you always been drawn to minutiae? Oh, yes. I have that problem. When I was working on perspective in art class, the drawings that I would do would be of the wall socket, but vast and worked out right from wall's eye view, and diminishing. And it is kind of hard to draw the little holes in the plug in perspective, if you're at a very rakish angle. I've always liked to inspect lichens at close range. I don't know what caused that cast of thought. At the same time, I would write in my notebooks about all these ambitions of writing enormous books, huge subjects for novels, but the only time I actually felt pleasure writing was when I had turned the lens a little bit and was focusing on something carefully and was able to revolve it in my mind. It's not automatic, I don't feel as if I'm a description machine cranking myself slowly in one direction, fixing on something, spitting out a description of it, and then moving on to the next thing. What it feels like is that, instead, I have some pressing point I want to make about the coils of a toaster. Next page: Of lumber and other obsessions

Author of Double Fold talks with Robert Birnbaum Writer Nicholson Baker has authored five novels, including The Mezzanine Room Temperature Vox The Fermata and The Everlasting Story of Nory . He has also published U and I , a personal meditation on his 'relationship' with John Updike, and a collections of essays, The Size of Thoughts . Nicholson Baker lives in Maine, with his wife and children, where he is trying to write the novel he was writing before he got caught up in the issues of his latest book. Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper is his singular and impassioned description of American libraries' systematic dismantling of our newspaper archives and the destruction of huge numbers of rare books. In the course of writing this compelling expose, Baker has presented an alarming story of the betrayal of the public trust by our greatest research libraries, including the Library of Congress, by their disposal of irreplaceable collections:

American novelist, nonfiction writer, and essayist. The following entry presents an overview of Baker's career through 2001. For further information on his life and works, see CLC, Volume 61.
    INTRODUCTION
With the publication of his debut novel, The Mezzanine (1988), Baker earned critical appreciation for imbuing the minute trivialities of a modern lunch break with unseen philosophical and personal significance. In subsequent novels, including Room Temperature Vox The Fermata (1994), and The Everlasting Story of Nory (1998), Baker similarly turned his obsessive, microscopic vision to dissections of parenthood, sexual fantasy, and childhood. Baker has also published an idiosyncratic, self-deprecating homage to author John Updike, U and I (1991), for whom Baker harbors a special fascination. During the mid-1990s Baker generated considerable controversy through his condemnation of library policies that dictate the disposal of card catalogs and the wholesale destruction of valuable newspaper collections, as detailed in
