    Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Cite This Source
    Joanna Baillie September 11 February 23 ) was a Scottish poet and dramatist. Baillie was very well-known during her lifetime and, though a woman, intended her plays not for the closet but for the stage. Admired both for her literary powers and her sweetness of disposition, her cottage at Hampstead was the centre of a brilliant literary society. Baillie died at the age of 89, her faculties remaining unimpaired to the last.
    Biography
    Baillie was born in 1762. Her father, Rev. James Baillie (c.1722–1778), was a Presbyterian minister and briefly, during the two years before his death, a Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow . Her mother Dorothea Hunter (c.1721–1806) was a sister of the great physicians and anatomists, William and John Hunter . The Baillies were an old Scottish family, and claimed among their ancestors the Scottish patriot Sir William Wallace Joanna Baillie was the youngest of three children; she had had a twin sister, but this child had died unnamed a few hours after her birth. Baillie grew up in close companionship with her sister, Agnes (1760–1861), and brother, Matthew Baillie (1761–1823), who became a celebrated London physician.

    Scottish poet and dramatist. Her series of Plays on the Passions De Montfort , made popular through the acting of Philip Kemble and Sarah Siddons . Among Baillie's finest works are her songs and ballads written in Scottish dialect. She was born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, and educated in Glasgow, afterwards moving to London, where she lived for the rest of her life and associated with many literary figures. Plays on the Passions are artificial in conception, lacking in dramatic incident, and deficient in technique. Each of them was written to illustrate one particular type of strong feeling. But her greatest success was The Family Legend 1810, a play outside the series, about a Scottish feud. hut(1)

    SCHOOL RHYMES FOR NEGRO CHILDREN How happy are we in that hour we love,
    When shadows grow longer and branches move;
    Blithe urchins then we be!
    From the school's low porch with a joyous shout,
    We rush and we run and we gambol about,
    So careless, light and free!
    And the good child merrily plays his part,
    For all is well in his guileless heart,
    The glance of his eye is bright.
    We hop and we leap and we toss the ball;
    Some dance to their shadows upon the wall, And spread out their hands with delight. The parrot that sits on her bough a-swinging, The bird and the butterfly, light air winging, And scarcely more happy, I trow. Then hey for the meadow, the glade and the grove, For evening is coming and branches move, We'll have merry pastime now. Injuries put javelin's friendly rivals in doubt for Olympics

    KERRY O'BRIEN: Whether you're caught up in Olympic fever or not, if you saw our story on Monday night featuring two of Australia's best track and field Olympic medal chances javelin throwers Louise Currey and Joanna Stone you couldn't help but be moved by their plight at the team selection trials in Sydney this week.
    Both are now in serious doubt because of injury.
    Although both these friendly rivals qualified for the Olympics by coming first and second in the trials, Currey tore ligaments in her left knee and Stone aggravated a rib injury.
    And Stone at least thinks it was avoidable.
    Rebecca Baillie reports.
    LOUISE CURREY, '7:30 REPORT', MONDAY: I wouldn't be doing it, if I didn't think I could be an Olympic champion.
    JOANNA STONE, '7:30 REPORT', MONDAY: It would be fantastic if the both of us were on the dais come the medal ceremony for the women's javelin.
    If we're both there, it would just be awesome.
    REBECCA BAILLIE: Earlier this week on the 7:30 Report, Joanna Stone and Louise Currey were brimming with confidence and excited about the prospect of medals at the Sydney Olympics. Louise Currey has already tasted Olympic success, winning a medal as Louise McPaul at Atlanta.

    8vo., original drab wrappers, printed paper label on upper cover, uncut, rather worn at spine and very edges but still a good, strong copy, small piece excised from last blank. London, Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green. 1826
    The Scottish poet and playwright Joanna Baillie (1782-1851) was the reserved, devout unmarried daughter of a Presbyterian minister. After her father's death and the death of her uncle, the famous anatomist William Hunter, her family came to live in London as the latter had left all his property to her brother. She wrote poetry for publication but gained most of her fame for her plays which were popular in printed form in the US and were staged in London, Liverpool, Dublin and Edinburgh. The actor John Kemble and Mrs Siddons often acted in their stage productions of Baillie's work. Her often obsessive, paranoid and even murderous characters were popular and had a great influence on Byron, one of her many friends who also included Wordsworth, Maria Edgeworth and most particularly Sir Walter Scott.
