WHO WAS ISAAC BABEL?
Isaac Babel (1894-1940) started out as a writer in Russia just before the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. He might have left his native country and moved to western Europe, as his wife did in 1925, but he could not bear to tear himself away from the source of his language from Russian culture and Russian surroundings. Since he chose instead to stay in Russia, he tried to get to the heart of the action: his mentor, Maxim Gorky, had told him that the writer must first get to know life in order to write about it. During the war between Russia and Poland of 1920 he served as a military correspondent attached to the cavalry unit of General Budyonny, then wrote the story sequence

Translated by Peter Constantine
Introduction by Cynthia Ozick
The Complete Works of Isaac Babel
This magnificent edition of Babel's collected work fulfills a lifelong ambition of Babel's daughter, Nathalie, who has authorized and edited the entire collection, and has collaborated with award-winning translator Peter Constantine in readying the work for publication. Every story or selection included in this volume (147 in total) has been newly edited and translated, beginning with Babel's first published story, "Old Shloyme," originally published in 1913, and concluding with two scenes from a screenplay that Babel did not live to see made into a film. Included in The Complete Works are stories that will be familiar to Babel enthusiasts, like the "Red Cavalry" cycle and his diaries, as well as untranslated stories and other works that appear in English for the first time.
To read Babel is to relive the wild and often terrifying swings of twentieth-century Russian history. No writer has conveyed with such emotion and convulsive energy the tragic story of a modern nation that remained a prisoner of its brutal and repressive past. Combining the compassion of Dostoevsky with the mordant wit of Chekhov, Babel injected a daring social criticism and a palpable sexual tension into the literary climate of post-tsarist Russia. In the process, he created a style so vivid, so lacerating, and so utterly hypnotic that his stories have come to define the sanguinary landscape of the Soviet Union in the years between the two world wars.

Celebration of Isaac Babel with "Marya"
Shaoli Ghosh Issue date: Section: Arts Just as classes ended and finals began last December, the Five Colleges celebrated the work of playwright Isaac Babel with a three-day festival, including the production of his play "Marya." The Smith College Department of Theatre presented "Marya" with Five College students and visiting director Veniamin Smekhov.
Relatively unknown in the United States, Isaac Babel was a Russian Jew who wrote short stories and plays discussing not only Jewish life, but also the Revolution. He lived in a time when the Russian government publicly marginalized and imposed pogroms on the Jewish people, in the wake of the coming Communist revolution.

Friday October 22, 2004 Searching for Isaac Babel in pen and ink by jennifer liss
staff writer Michael Iofin recounts two dates with the finality of an artist signing a completed painting. On April 10, 1991, the now 45-year-old Russian artist signed a contract with a St. Petersburg book publisher who agreed to publish an uncommissioned project he had privately worked on for close to a decade. On April 11, 1991, he left his home at 6 a.m. and traveled first to Washington, D.C., to visit a cousin and then to San Francisco. He would never return to the city of Peter the Great. And the city by the bay would become his new home. The project (that was never published) is a moving, personal collection of pen and ink illustrations of Isaac Babel’s stories. Born in Odessa in 1894, Babel was one of the most renowned Jewish authors of his generation. He lived his life under the Soviet regime. Iofin began the project in 1981, at a time when all art was still government regulated. “In 1991 when I finished with the Babel project it was a time when people weren’t yet talking about Babel and his works,” Iofin explains from his Richmond District home studio.

For more information about the writer Isaac Babel or about the author of this story, you may want to use the Contemporary Authors database, available online from our library's Web site. (You do not need to do any research in order to write an effective essay, although you may want to look at images of some of Renoir's paintings , if you are not familiar with his style.) Homage for Isaac Babel
Doris Lessing The day I had promised to take Catherine down to visit my young friend Philip at his school in the country, we were to leave at eleven, but she arrived at nine. Her blue dress was new, and so were her fashionable shoes. Her hair had just been done. She looked more than ever like a pink-and-gold Renoir girl who expects everything from life. Catherine lives in a white house overlooking the sweeping brown tides of the river. She helped me clean up my flat with a devotion which said that she felt small flats were altogether more romantic than large houses. We drank tea, and talked mainly about Philip, who, being fifteen, has pure stern tastes in everything from food to music. Catherine looked at the books lying around his room, and asked if she might borrow the stories of Isaac Babel to read on the train. Catherine is thirteen. I suggested she might find them difficult, but she said: "Philip reads them, doesn't he?"
