22. Jewish Currents January 2007 - The Shattered Faith Of Isaac Babel
The Shattered Faith of isaac babel by Nicholas Jahr.
http://www.jewishcurrents.org/2007-jan-jahr.htm
From the January 2007 issue of Jewish Currents
The Shattered Faith of Isaac Babel
by Nicholas Jahr Reviewed in this essay
The Complete Works of Isaac Babel , by Isaac Babel, Nathalie Babel (editor), Peter Constantine (translator), with an introduction by Cynthia Ozick. 2005, W.W. Norton, 1,072 pages.
A few years back, I was working as a lifeguard in lower Manhattan
. One of my least favorite parts of the job was staying late on Tuesday nights to watch over a rambunctious bunch of yeshiva boys. Not wanting to spend the hour discussing how I could possibly call myself a Jew if I didn’t so much as wear a yarmulke , or, so help me, whether Israel was a great country or the greatest country, I kept my Jewish upbringing quiet. It was Purim when my disguise finally failed me; I made the mistake of correcting a kid’s pronunciation of “Ahasuerus.” Instantly I had a small mob in the water at my feet. I don’t remember what I said, but by the following week they’d forgotten and I was a gentile again. It’s strange how fast you can get so far from yourself. Isaac Babel (1894-1940) knew just how strange: “Tomorrow is the day of fasting, Tisha b’Ab, and I say nothing because I am Russian.” He was also, of course, a Jew. At the time, Babel was traveling with the viciously anti-Jewish Cossacks of the Red Cavalry to report on their ‘revolutionary’ campaign to liberate Poland. Fearing his comrades, he worked and wrote under the name Kiril Lyutov.

26. "The Death Of Dolgushov" By Isaac Babel - From SovLit.com
The Death of Dolgushov by isaac babel Text author bio.
http://www.sovlit.com/rasskazy/dolgushov.html
Works of Soviet Literature summarized for those unable or too lazy to read them in the original. THE DEATH OF DOLGUSHOV
by Isaac Babel
(Complete Translated Text) The curtains of battle were moving toward the city. At noon, Korochaev, in a black cloak, the disgraced commander of the fourth division, fighting alone and seeking out death, flew past us. On the run he shouted to me:
"Our communications links are broken! Radziwillow and Brody are in flames!"
And he galloped off, fluttering, all black, with eyes like coal.
On the plain, flat as a board, the brigades were repositioning themselves. The sun was rolling along in the crimson dust. The wounded, in ditches, were snacking. Nurses were lying on the grass and singing quietly. Afonka's scouts were roaming the field, searching out the dead and uniforms. Afonka passed by within two feet of me. Without turning his head he said:
"They smacked us right in the face. Ain't no doubt about it. They're thinking of changing the divisional commander. The soldiers don't trust him."
The Poles came up to the forest three versts from us and set up their machine guns nearby. Bullets whine and scream. Their lament grows unendurably. Bullets wound the earth and dig into it, trembling with impatience. Vytyagaichenko, commander of the regiment, snoring in the sunshine, cried out in his sleep and woke up. He got on his horse and rode off to the lead squadron. His face was crumpled, in red streaks after his uncomfortable sleep, and his pockets were full of plums.

Isaac Babel Festival The Isaac Babel Festival (December 9-11, 2004) celebrates a beloved Jewish-Russian writer in performances of music, theater, film, and scholarship. Isaac Babel (1894-1940), whose 1926 story cycle Red Cavalry Marya, Marya by the Smith College Theatre Department, directed by Veniamin Smekhov. An actor with the acclaimed Taganka Theater in Moscow during the period of its greatest impact on Soviet life and culture (1964-84), Smekhov, who now directs internationally, is in residence at Smith this semester. "Building from there," says Smith, "we discovered that Babel’s grandson was living in the States, and that by screening one of Babel’s little known films we could highlight Babel’s extensive work in film." Smith, an independent scholar who is currently a Five College Associate, has done a good deal of research on the beloved Jewish-Russian writer whose stories based on Jewish life in Odessa and about Russia’s violent Civil War put a human face on those larger than life events in Russia during its transition to a modern state. The Russian Jewish author Isaak Babel (1894-1940) became famous over night in 1925 upon the publication of his collection of stories The Red Cavalry. When he was arrested in 1939, his fate took an abrupt turn. He was executed the next year. Interweaving fragments of Babel's stories with interviews with surviving family members, Isaac Babel pieces together a portrait of the writer.

If it hadn't been said already, the same sentiment might now be offered on the publication of this magisterial collection of Isaac Babel (the first time his complete works have been gathered). Peter Constantine recounts, in his translator's introduction, how he originally approached Babel's daughter Nathalie with the idea of a translated edition of Babel's then untranslated screenplays, including his collaborations with Sergei Eisenstein. Indeed these screenplays are, in many ways,...

Jerome Charyn's Isaac Babel Shortlist
by Ron Hogan Jerome Charyn Savage Shorthand "Babel's 'Guy de Maupassant' is my favorite story in the whole world; it's funny and sad, and it's the most telling story ever written about language and all its tricks and traps. "My next best favorite is 'The King,' about the Odessa gangster Benya Krik and his magical orange pants. "Readers should also look at 'Di Grasso,' a story about the mysteries and sometimes sordid magic of art. "I would then suggest a look at Babel's 1920 Diary, which is his own portrait of the artist as a young man, an artist under enemy fire. "Now the reader is ready to look at Red Cavalry and its curious ride through Poland, with all the savagery and bump-bump of the human heart. "And lastly, the reader should look at 'Benya Krik,' Babel’s screenplay about Benya, but from the point of view of a Soviet writer who has to wind his way through Soviet politics, which has already become a deadly maze." Charyn has also recently edited Inside the Hornet's Head , which starts with his love for Saul Bellow's Adventures of Augie March and goes on to include eightteen other great Jewish-American writers, ranging from Isaac Bashevis Singer to Leonard Cohen.
